T. Harv Eker argues that managing money is essential even when you have very little. Using a grocery-shopping analogy, he emphasizes that allocating even small amounts of income into predetermined segments builds the habit of money management, and that habit matters more than the dollar amount.

Imagine that you had a certain amount of money and you went to the grocery store once a week, let's say spent $200 at the grocery store. That was your food for the week. Okay, now let me ask you a simple question. You got home at 11:30, 12:00 noon, you're a bit hungry, you're going to have lunch. Are you going to eat all of the food? You go, well, of course I'm not going to eat all the food. I bought it for the whole week. Exactly. You're going to handle it. You're going to manage it so that it lasts you a appropriately. Yes or yes, it's the same when it comes to your money. You've got to manage your money and manage it properly. And we teach people how to do that. Now here's the thing. People go way, Harv, you know, you just said especially, we don't have a lot of it. I don't have a lot of money to manage. Exactly. Here's the issue. A lot of people will say to me, harv, I don't have a lot of money to manage. There's nothing in front of me to manage. Whatever money you do have, okay? Whatever money, income you do have coming in, you've got to manage it. And here's why. We are creatures of. What starts with an H. What's the word? Who's got. Yes, Habit. We are creatures of habit. And here's the thing. If you are not managing your money, when you start having more money coming in, maybe you've done our programs, maybe you've seen our income methods, money coming in, guess what's going to happen? You're still not going to manage your money and it's all going to dissipate and you're going to wonder, why am I not doing well financially? Why am I not getting rich? Why am I not getting financially free? Because you're not managing my money. Why are you not managing? Because you're not in the habit of it. So even if you have $1, $1 coming in, you need to break that up into certain segments that we teach and you need to break that up and manage that $1. And if you can do that, you will gain the what? The habit. Because the habit is way more important than the amount.
