Episode interview (Peter Attia with Prof. Luc van Loon) about muscle protein synthesis (MPS): methods (stable isotopes, tracer-infused foods), determinants of MPS (protein dose, digestion/absorption kinetics, amino-acid composition—notably leucine), differences between protein sources (whey faster spike; micellar casein slower but sustained; whole-food meals slower still), and the role of resistance exercise in sensitizing muscle to protein. Key quantitative points: ~20 g high-quality protein per meal often maximizes MPS for ~4–5 hours in healthy adults (based on milk/egg protein concentrates); van Loon also referenced a practical leucine target of ~2–3 g per meal to robustly stimulate MPS. Glucose ingestion rates for athletes were ~1–1.1 g/min (60–70 g/hr), increasing to ~1.3–1.4 g/min when adding fructose. Intramuscular triglyceride stores are used preferentially by trained athletes; intrinsically labeled milk protein showed ≈25% tracer recovery in milk. A 100 g protein feeding produced extended MPS in another study (~12 hours detectable). Short-term inactivity (1 week immobilization) can induce ~35% anabolic resistance which is largely reversible with resistance training. Clinical concerns: hospitalized/older/low-intake patients often consume too little protein (~0.5 g/kg/day) and are vulnerable to rapid lean-mass loss; for these people protein quality (lysine/methionine content) matters more than for high-intake athletes who can compensate by quantity. Collagen is low-quality for MPS (poor essential amino-acid balance) but provides glycine/proline and may benefit collagen-rich tissues (ligaments/tendons) — evidence tentative. New, exploratory finding discussed: measured human brain protein synthesis (from surgical cortical tissue) indicated an average brain protein turnover rate almost three times that of muscle — loosely translating to a near-complete protein renewal on an ~three-week timescale (provocative and preliminary).

About 1–1.1 g/min (≈60–70 g/hour), with increases to ~1.3–1.4 g/min when adding fructose.

About 20 g of high-quality protein (based on milk/egg protein concentrates), producing an MPS response lasting ~4–5 hours.

Approximately 2–3 grams of leucine per meal.

13C-phenylalanine stable-isotope infusion and measurement of incorporation into muscle protein (fractional synthetic rate) using muscle biopsies and mass spectrometry.
