Peter Attia breaks down microplastics, PFAS, and phthalates: what they are, where they hide, and how much actually enters your body. Most ingested particles pass through you unchanged, but smaller ones can cross into the bloodstream. The weekly intake is likely 10 to 300 micrograms, not the viral credit-card claim.

Questions this episode answers

Microplastics are typically defined as plastic particles smaller than 5 millimeters; many studies focus on those <1 millimeter. Nanoplastics are defined as particles <1 micrometer (µm).

PM2.5 refers to particulate matter in air smaller than 2.5 micrometers (µm), small enough to potentially cross pulmonary epithelium and enter systemic circulation.

Aggregated studies suggest a broad range of roughly 10–300 micrograms (µg) per week; some studies (e.g., a 2023 Korean study) estimate ~140–310 µg/week. A 5 g/week (credit-card) estimate has been widely debunked.

About 99% of ingested micro-/nanoplastics are eliminated via stool, with gut transit typically ~24–72 hours.

Animal data suggest roughly 0.3% on average, with an upper-bound around 1.7%, and absorption is strongly size-dependent.
