Podcast episode in which Gary Brecka (Streamline Medical Group) explains glutathione, calling it "the mother of all antioxidants," describing its production by the liver, presence inside every cell, and its roles in cellular protection, immune support, and potential benefits for conditions like diabetes, glaucoma, osteoarthritis, atherosclerosis and alcohol-related effects. He notes glutathione can protect cancer cells from chemotherapy (hence cancer patients are advised not to take it), that it is poorly absorbed orally so patients prefer injections, and that injections can cause mild soreness because glutathione is hypotonic. Closing includes Streamline Medical Group contact links.

Welcome to Body Science with Gary Brecke, sponsored by Streamline Medical of Naples, Florida. There's a number of healthcare professionals and the average person that you might ask, what is glutathione? And they'll tell you they've never heard of it. But it's also known as the mother of all antioxidant. It's possibly the most important antioxidant in the entire human biome. There are those that have been made aware of this antioxidant, but they don't realize qu quite how powerful and how cellular protective this mother of all antioxidants really is. If, if I could only choose one antioxidant to discuss today, it would always be glutathione because it is manufactured by the liver and it resides inside the cell of every single cell in our entire body. There's not one cell in our body that does not contain glutathione. In fact, there's a lot of research today looking into the rate at which cells die. And they can test the level of glutathione to find out just how healthy and how long the cell is going to live or how soon it will die. So it's powerful enough to protect cancer cells against chemotherapeutic agents if it's given prior to a chemotherapeutic, chemotherapeutic treatments. And, you know, for that reason, they suggest that cancer patients do not take glutathione. But in an otherwise healthy biome, glutathione does so many things to improve our immune system, to fight diabetes, glaucoma, osteoarthritis, atherosclerosis. It can counteract some of the effects of alcoholism. It can improve memory. It does so many of these things on its own that it's absolutely critical function. Most patients prefer to take this by injection. It's very poorly absorbed through, through the oral pathway. And sometimes a patient will complain that there's some mild soreness at the injection site. And they always ask, why does this occur with glutathione, not with other injections? Happens to be because glutathione is very hypotonic, which means that it will draw water from the surrounding tissues to the site of the injection. This is a good, good thing. It helps dilute the glutathione and then spread it out into the body. And when that fluid gravitates towards that injection site, you get a mild amount of pain or mild amount of soreness at that site. Usually passes in a very short period of time and is completely offset, in my opinion, by the it can further reduce the stress of the liver and it has substantial anti aging benefits which include improving hair, skin, nails and connective tissue.
