In this passage Terry Real introduces his paradigm of 'ecological wisdom' or 'ecological humility,' urging that humans are part of (not above) nature and that relationships should be seen as ecosystems or biospheres. He argues that recognizing this humility motivates us to care for our relational environment and that moving from a power-over model to a collaborative model fundamentally changes relationships.

The new paradigm that I write about and work with is what I call ecological wisdom or ecological humility. I am not above nature. I'm in it. Hello. Wake up. Our relationships are our biospheres. We're not above them. We breathe them. Think of ourselves as an ecosystem that we're in, as opposed to we're lord and masters above. Once we have the humility of understanding we're in it, then it becomes in our interests to keep our biosphere clean. And once we shift out of that power over model to collaboration with model, everything changes. All.
