When Values Don’t Match in Love (And Why It Still Hurts Even When You Know Better)

Heather Prince talks about ending a 34-year relationship over mismatched core values. She explains why value differences hurt even when you see them coming, and how emotional labor builds when you're trying to change someone who won't change.

Hello, Heather here. Under a recent video that I put up about values, I read a comment that said, I wish that were true, and I want to speak directly to the lady who wrote that and anyone else who thought it because that sentence isn't casual. That sentence comes from Disappointment. It usually means you've tried to do relationships the right way, you've communicated, you've compromised, you've told yourself that love means meeting someone halfway, and yet you keep ending up in relationships where your core values are quietly Dismissed. So when someone talks about values like family value or freedom value, it can sound like theory, not lived reality. But let me be very honest with you, when values are mismatched, it doesn't show up on the first few dates. It shows up months or even years later. As you doing more emotional labour, you carrying the responsibility, you making excuses for someone who doesn't meet you, and maybe you feeling lonely inside the relationship. If family, for example, is important to you, that doesn't just mean children, it can mean responsibility for elderly parents. It can mean emotional presence. It can mean showing up, staying, being dependable. And if someone values freedom in a way that means distance, avoidance, or keeping one foot out the door, you will always feel like you're asking for too much. That's when people start to say, I wish that were true, because deep down you want to believe there's a relationship where you don't have to over-explain your needs, where love doesn't feel like hard work, where you're not negotiating for basic care. Here's the part that matters. It's not that aligned values don't exist, it's that unresolved emotional patterns pull you towards what's familiar, not what's healthy. So even when the mismatch hurts, it feels known, and known feels safer than the unknown. Until one day you realize you're exhausted, you don't feel cherished, and you've slowly disappeared inside the relationship. Aligned values don't create drama, they create peace. You feel grounded, you feel chosen, you feel like you can relax instead of Perform. If you've ever thought, I wish that were true, it's not because you're naive or broken. It's because your system hasn't been shown a different experience yet, and that can change. Love isn't meant to be something that you tolerate. It's meant to be something you feel at home in. And how do I know this? My relationship completed after 34 years together, and I now have a greater understanding and self-awareness, and I help my clients to feel the same. If this resonates, don't hesitate to message me. I look forward to hearing from you.
