Why You Keep Losing Yourself in Relationships (The Real Emotional Cost)

Heather Prince explains how past betrayal and abandonment create a nervous-system feedback loop: you develop beliefs like "I must get everything right," then over-prepare and second-guess yourself, which reinforces the original wound. Healing means rebuilding internal safety and self-trust so decisions become effortless instead of exhausting.

Hello. Somewhere along the way, people don't just go through relationships, they get shaped by them. And after a certain kind of experience, especially betrayal, emotional dishonesty, or long-term abandonment, something subtle but powerful changes inside a person. I saw this very clearly the other day. I was with a woman who had been married for years. Her ex-husband had had an affair for over 7 years before she eventually left the marriage. She's now remarried, and on the outside, life has moved on. But something was still showing up very quietly. Before going out, she changes her outfits multiple times, not once, not twice, several times, and what struck me wasn't about the clothes, it was what was happening underneath. Because this wasn't about Fashion. It wasn't about style. It was about safety. Her nervous system was still trying to solve an old problem. If I get this right, I will be okay. If I look right, I won't be judged. If I don't get this wrong. I won't be rejected. And that's what most people don't realize about deep relationship wounds. They don't stay in the past, they move into the present in subtle ways. How you choose your clothes, how you speak, How you read people's faces, how you question yourself before leaving the house. On the surface, it looks like confidence issues, but underneath, it's something deeper. It's a lack of internal certainty about how you'll be received, and that's where we can map this out clearly. Because it always follows a pattern. Beliefs form first, not always consciously, but after experiences like betrayal, abandonment, or emotional inconsistency, beliefs begin to form like, love isn't stable, I have to get things right To be accepted. People can change suddenly. I can't fully trust my judgment. Those beliefs then create an emotional attitude, a low-level alertness, a quiet self-doubt, a scanning for what might go wrong, and that attitude drives behaviour— overthinking, over-preparing, over-correcting, changing outfits multiple times, rechecking decisions, seeking reassurance— then here's where it becomes a cycle. That behaviour affects how other people respond because When someone is unsure of themselves, even subtly, it changes their, their energy and they hesitate, they over-explain, they second-guess, and people don't just respond to words, they respond to presence. So the outside world responds differently, which then reinforces the original belief. See, I wasn't sure for a reason. And the cycle tightens. Belief creates behaviour, behaviour shapes experience, experience reinforces belief, and this is why so many intelligent, successful clients that I look after look completely fine on the outside but internally still feel like they're getting it wrong in small daily moments like choosing what to wear, like speaking up, like trusting their own judgment even after the relationship has ended, even after a new partner is present, even after life has moved forward because the nervous system doesn't update as fast as the circumstances do and this is the part most people miss. Healing isn't just about understanding what happened, it's about It's about rebuilding internal safety so you don't need to control every detail to feel okay, so you don't need to overthink to feel prepared, so you don't need to perfect yourself to feel accepted because when self-trust is restored, everything changes. Decisions become quicker, the mind becomes quieter, the body becomes less tense and getting ready to go out stops feeling like a test of worth and instead becomes simple again. You choose, you leave, you live. And this shift doesn't just affect relationships, it changes how you show up in every area of life. Because when a person stops negotiating their worth in small daily moments, she stops attracting relationships where she has to prove it In big ones, that's the real work, not becoming someone new.
