The magical science of storytelling | David JP Phillips | TEDxStockholm

In this TEDx talk, David JP Phillips explores how storytelling wields extraordinary power over human behavior by triggering specific neurochemical responses. He begins with Rob Walker’s “Significant Object Study,” where 200 cheap eBay items paired with author‑written stories sold for dramatically higher prices, illustrating storytelling’s ability to increase perceived value. Phillips then explains that emotional investment—especially love—overrides critical thinking, flooding the brain with hormones such as dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins, which he dubs the “angel’s cocktail.” He demonstrates each hormone: dopamine through a suspenseful personal anecdote about a disastrous sales meeting, oxytocin via a heartbreaking tale of a failed pregnancy and the empathy it evokes, and endorphins by showing how humor releases them. He contrasts this with the “devil’s cocktail” of cortisol and adrenaline, which dominates most workplace communication and hampers focus and creativity. Phillips proposes “functional storytelling” as a practical method: recognize that everyone can tell stories, write and index personal stories, and deliberately select stories that elicit the desired hormonal response in an audience. He concludes with a brief history of storytelling—from oral tradition to cave paintings, text, and PowerPoint—arguing that our brains are still wired for narrative, not slides, and urging listeners to harness storytelling’s scientific power.
