Chapters
Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another Arete One degree. This is another micro chapter from my book, Arete, Activate your heroic potential. Objective 5 is on mastering yourself. This is one of the first ideas in that chapter. Objective might be one of my favorites. Three forms of discipline. Reactive, structural and expansive. Phil Stutts tells us we need to develop three forms of discipline. Reactive discipline, structural discipline, and expansive discipline. Here's the quick take on each. First, we have reactive discipline, which is just what it sounds like. Something triggers you. Can you step in between the stimulus and your habitual suboptimal response with the discipline to choose a better response? Fantastic. That's reactive discipline. Structural discipline is all about the daily habits that keep us plugged in, that give our lives the structure we need to connect to and express the best version of ourselves. And of course, structural discipline is the foundation of the protocol we want to make sure we're executing, especially when we don't feel like it. Then we have expansive discipline. This, Phil says, is both the most important and and the hardest of the three. Every single moment we have a choice. Will we step forward into growth or back into safety? If we want to activate our heroic potential and have a shot at experiencing all that we're capable of being, we must more and more consistently shout bring it on. As we choose to expand, expand, expand. In short, we need to make that expansion a discipline. How about a quick inventory? How are you doing with your reactive discipline, your structural discipline, and your expansive discipline? What's awesome, what needs work, and what's one thing you can do a little differently today? Here's to your disciplines, all three of them. I hope you enjoyed that Arete plus one degree from my new book, Activate your heroic potential. The book will be shipped on November 14, right before Black Friday.
