Short spoken mini-lecture by Brian Johnson introducing the metaphor of a rubber band to describe three personal states: comfort zone (no growth), stretch zone (healthy challenge) and snap zone (overreach that breaks you). He advises setting authentic, achievable “stretch” goals and persistently, patiently and playfully working toward them rather than seeking instant results.

Hi, this is Brian with another mini chapter from A Philosopher's Notes. This one's called Comfort, Stretch and Snap Zones. Alright, you still have your rubber band from the last mini chapter video. Sweet. So if we stay in our comfort zones all our lives, we aren't going to feel too great. That's pretty straightforward. Imagine a limp rubber band. No stretching, not so good. The challenge is, if we're constantly setting ridiculous goals we expect to hit in ridiculous time frames, we're not going to feel too great either. That would be the equivalent of pulling the rubber band so hard it snaps. Ouch. Raise your hand if you've been there and done that. Both of my hands are literally currently up the trick. We've got to find the stretch zone between our comfort zones and our snap zones. That place where we're stretching ourselves, but not so much. We snap. The problem is we want everything and we want it now. Uh, yeah. Let's chillax a bit, set some fun, authentically inspiring stretch goals and then diligently, patiently, persistently and playfully stretch ourselves, shall we? That's where it's at in the stretch zone in between comfort and snapping. Comfort, stretch and snap zones. Hope you dug it. Look forward to sharing more with you soon. In the meantime, as always, have an awesome day.
