Micro Class: Good, Better, Best

Short micro-class by Brian Johnson introducing the 'Good, Better, Best' post-performance review framework (inspired by Jim Afromo). Johnson explains three questions to ask after a performance—what was good, what could be better (needs work), and what behavior change is needed to be best—emphasizing starting with positives and using a warm, coaching stance; he notes applications for parents, managers, and athletes.

Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another micro class. This one's on Good, Better, Best. It's inspired by the champions mind by Jim Afromo. Good, Better, Best. So another thing that champions do really well is the post performance evaluation. Now almost every single mental toughness coach, mental training coach says it's extraordinarily important to evaluate your performance after you do something, obviously, but that most of us do it wrong. Most of us start out with the negative stuff. Oh man, I did this wrong and.
I did that wrong and I did that wrong and I need to get better.
Now obviously we need to focus on things that need work, but we need to start with what's working. So Jim has three questions he recommends we ask after each performance. First we say, what was good? What did I do that just was awesome? Oh, let me take note of that. Let me celebrate that. Let me do more of that. Let me ingrain that in my consciousness before I get to what could I do better? So what could have I done better?
Right?
We've talked about that as needs work, which I love that phrase, needs work. What needs work? Approach it with a warm, neutral, supportive coach's perspective.
Right?
You're not judging yourself, you're not berating yourself, you're looking at it and saying objectively, well, okay, yeah, that could have used some work. Let me get excited about it. And then the third question is, what do I need to change in my behavior so that I can be my best? I'm going to do that such that I can get better and such that I can make that something I celebrate next time around. Good, better, best. Really cool way to go through your post performance review. Remember, don't start with the negative stuff. And if you are a parent, obviously if you're a manager or a leader, it applies as well. If you're a parent, don't start with, you know, your kids when they come home from a sporting event of hey, you know, if you ask them how'd it go almost all the time, they're going to talk about this stuff first. So Lanny Basham, when he talked about this with winning in mind, gold medal winner, etc. He said basically, start here. Start by asking your kids what was awesome, what was really exciting about today, right? Then ask, okay, what needed a little bit of work. Okay, cool. Then ask, what can we do a little differently so we could be our best? He used different words, but the same basic idea. Good, better, best.
Let's get it on.
Let's be champions.
