Micro Class: Let's Not Be Mediocre

Brian Johnson argues that mediocrity means being stuck in the middle between what you're capable of and what you actually do. He draws on Todd Henry's Die Empty and the formula urgency plus diligence to explain how closing that gap reduces regret and anxiety.

Foreign. Hi, this is Brian.
Welcome back to another micro class.
This one's on let's not be Mediocre. Inspired by Die Empty.
Todd Henry, philosopher's note.
Great book. Mediocre. Did you know? I did not until reading this book that the Latin roots of the word mediocre are medius and ocras, medius and acris. Medius means, as you'd guess, the middle acris means a rugged mountain. So to be mediocre is literally to be stuck in the middle sad face of a rugged mountain. That's mediocrity. Stuck in the middle of a rugged mountain. Didn't quite have what it took to get up here and plant your flag. Yes, exciting. So, interestingly, there are a ton of synonyms for mediocre. Ordinary, average, middling, uninspired, unexceptional, prosaic, pedestrian. Okay, my apple dictionary goes off. It's got like a dozen more synonyms for mediocre. There's one and only one antonym to mediocre in my apple dictionary. You know what that is? Excellent. That is the antonym to mediocrity. If we want to get out of being stuck in the middle of this mountain, this rugged mountain, and summit our potential, we need to commit to excellence. That's why if I had to summarize my entire philosophy in one word, it would be the Greek word for excellence, Arete. Arete means basically to move from here to here, moment to moment to moment to moment. You have something you're capable of doing and being in any given moment. And if you are being here, sad face, you're going to feel anxiety, depression, ick. If there's a gap between what you're capable of being and what you're actually being in this gap exists. Regret, anxiety, disillusionment, et cetera. We need to close the gap. We need to live with excellence. We need to live with arte. The phrase that Todd comes back to again and again in his book is urgency plus diligence. We need to show up and get done what needs to get done.
Moment to moment to moment.
That's how we avoid being mediocre.
Hope you enjoyed.
How can you dial up your excellence a little bit more today and summit the peak of your potential? Look forward to sharing more soon. See ya.
Hey, guys, this is Brian. A lot of people don't know what I do beyond these YouTube videos I put up, so I thought I'd give you a quick tour of our membership platform. Thousands of people have joined us already. 10 bucks a month get access to a ton of stuff that's in addition to what I put up on YouTube for free. So the basic idea is you just watched a micro class. Hope you enjoyed that. I share. I just started doing these micro classes, but I Now share over 50 of these per month. We've shared dozens so far and it's.
Basically a quick class on my absolute.
Favorite stuff off across the different domains of optimal living. Two to three maybe five minute little micro classes on how to optimize your life. In addition to that, you get access to every single one of our Philosopher's notes. We now have over 250 philosopher's notes on some really, really good books. A lot of them in each one of them. You're familiar with the PNTV videos if you've watched many of those. But we also have PDFs and MP3s of our Philosopher's notes. So here's. Let's take a look at what a PDF looks like. This is an example of a Philosopher's note. It's a six page PDF where I basically share some of my favorite thoughts, riff on it, talk about how other teachers say the same things, and give you a nice playful kick in the butt to go out and apply the wisdom that is a Philosopher's Note. I record that as an MP3 that you can download as well. And 250 of those, I produce 10 of those at least per month that I share with you in addition to the micro classes. And then you also get access to all of our old classes. We have the five day immersion reboot habits 101, confidence 101, getting stuff done 101, meditation 101 and then future classes including relationships 101, energy 101, purpose 101, biz 101 goals 101, etc. So there you go. Really blessed to have some extraordinary support and I will share with you where you go to sign up. I'll put a link to this, but basically cruise on over here. You can sign up. And this is the kind of response we've gotten so far from our members.
It's pretty neat.
