Micro Class: Self-Affirmation Theory

Brian Johnson explains self-affirmation theory from Amy Cuddy's Presence, showing how affirming your personal values reduces stress. An experiment demonstrates the measurable impact of this simple practice on your nervous system.

Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another micro class. This one's on self Affirmation Theory. It's inspired by Presence by Amy Cuddy. Phenomenal book. She gives us a bunch of ways that we can nudge ourselves both mindset wise and physical body wise.
Right. If you.
And one of the big ideas I love is this idea of self Affirmation theory. She makes the important point though that we are not talking about Stuart Smalley on snl, looking into the mirror, gazing into his eyes and saying, I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, gosh darn it, people like me. Those affirmations, those canned one line mantras or affirmations have not been proven to be effective in the scientific laboratory. But this idea of affirming ourselves has been. How do we affirm ourselves? What does that even mean? Well, you need to have a sense of what your values are. When you have a sense of what your values are and you live consistent with them, you're affirming yourself. That's a powerful thing to do. Which leads to deeper levels of presence. Here's one way to arrive at a deeper sense of self that you can affirm. Think. Think of three words that describe you best. What three words capture your essence when you're being your most authentic, boldest, best version of yourself, what three words capture that for you? Think about it, right? And then think about the number one. What's the number one word that captures you? Reflect on that briefly. Just write a little paragraph about why that value is important to you. And then think of one instance in which you've demonstrated that value. May not sound like a big deal, but that's huge. They've brought people into a lab and they had them do basically exactly this experiment where they identified their core value, they wrote about it, reflected on it, and then they gave them the most stressful test you could imagine. Psychologists came up with some crazy way to stress people out where they bring you into a lab, right? And they have you present in front of a panel of judges who just look at you sternly as you give an impromptu five minute speech. Here's you impromptu five minute speech that's being video recorded so other people can judge you. And these people are told just to look at you sternly, to give you no positive feedback while you deliver a five minute impromptu speech. Would that stress you out? Yeah, that's pretty stressful. Then you, after you do that five minute impromptu speech, you need to count from 2083 backwards by 13. And these judges, ever so wonderful, tell you to hurry up. All as part of the experiment. Now, in the experiment, half of the group did this exercise first, which is a self affirmation exercise. I identified their value, articulated how it, why it's important to them, how they've used it, and then they did this test. The other group didn't do this test. They just wrote about random stuff.
Right?
Guess what?
Usually when you go through this test.
Your cortisol levels go way up. Cortisol levels go way up. Why? Because it's stressful by design. But the individuals who did this values exercise before their cortisol levels stayed the same. They did not spike. That's a fascinating thing. Big idea from self affirmation theory for us. We can nudge ourselves by reminding ourselves, create more personal power, more presence, by reminding ourselves of what we stand for, what we value. Do it daily in our masterpiece days worksheet. This is gonna be an important thing. Think about what's important to you consistently and you will manage your stress powerfully.
It's one way to cultivate presence. Hope you enjoyed and I hope you do the exercise.
What's your number one?
What's the time in which you've used it?
Have fun.
Let's build our personal power. Have another awesome day.
See ya.
Hey guys, this is Brian. A lot of people don't know what I do beyond these YouTube videos I put up. So I thought I'd give you a quick tour of our membership platform. Thousands of people have joined us already. 10 bucks a month get access to a ton of stuff that's in addition to what I put up on YouTube for free. So the basic idea is you just watched a micro class. Hope you enjoyed that. I share. I just started doing these micro classes, but I Now share over 50 of these per month. We've shared dozens so far and it's basically a quick class on my absolute favorite stuff across the different domains of optimal living. 2 to 3 maybe 5 minute little micro classes on how to optimize your life. In addition to that, you get access to every single one of our philosopher's notes. We now have over 250 philosophers notes on some really, really good books. A lot of them in each one of them. You familiar with the PNTV videos if you've watched many of those. But we also have PDFs and MP3s of our Philosopher's notes.
So here's.
Let's take a look at what a PDF looks like. This is an example of a philosopher's note. It's a six page PDF where I basically Share some of my favorite thoughts, riff on it, talk about how other teachers say the same things, and give you a nice playful kick in the butt to go out and apply the wisdom that is a philosopher's note. I record that as an MP3 that you can download as well. And 250 of those. I produce 10 of those at least per month that I share with you in addition to the micro classes. And then you also get access to all of our old classes. We have the five day immersion, reboot habits 101, confidence 101, getting stuff done 101, meditation 101, then future classes including relationships 101, energy 101, purpose 101, biz 101, goals 101, etc. So there you go. Really blessed to have some extraordinary support and I will share with you where you go to sign up. I'll put a link to this, but basically cruise on over here, you can sign up. And this is the kind of response we've gotten so far from our members. It's pretty neat. I've made more positive changes in my life, my brief membership only three months so far, than I did through years of counseling.
Yes.
Brian Johnson, you are a rock star. Thank you very much. That's very kind of you. And I'm making huge strides in optimizing my life. As a result of your philosopher's notes and optimal living classes, I spend $19 a month on my gym membership to take care of my body. A mere $10 a month on an optimal living membership is the biggest value investment I've ever made in my emotional, mental and spiritual health. Thank you for the incredible work you're doing to inspire us to be rock stars in our own lives. Unbelievably inspiring and humbling. In 24 hours, we received hundreds of extraordinary notes from members around the world. So there you go. That's a quick look at what we're up to. 10 bucks a month. Hope to astonish you. There you go.
