A short motivational mini-chapter by Brian Johnson that uses the metaphor of a stretched rubber band to describe 'dynamic tension' between current reality and an ideal self. Johnson encourages listeners to embrace that tension, love their present, get excited about goals, and advance toward ideals through small, consistent 'baby steps' while avoiding extremes like quitting dreams or numbing behaviors.

Hi, this is Brian with another mini chapter from A Philosopher's Notes. This one's called Rubber Bands and your ideals. So we need your help with this one. Participation here is required. Grab a rubber band. Or you can imagine it if you need to. Stretch it between the pointer fingers of your left and right hands. Pretty please. You feel that tension? Let's imagine that your left hand is your current reality and your right hand stretching away from the left is your ideal. That tension is called dynamic tension. It's a good thing. But most people don't like that feeling. It's a little uncomfortable. And way too often we do everything we can to escape that dynamic tension. We quit dreaming and pull our ideals back. Or we manically chase after insane goals and then collapse. Or we numb ourselves with another beer or another glass of wine or another hour of TV or another hour online. Those are not good things. What we want to do is be honest about and love where we're at. Get giddy about our goals, and hold the tension as we joyfully take the next baby step in the direction of our dreams. And then the next step and the next step and the next step and the next. Diligently, patiently, persistently and playfully. And sure enough, we're moving toward our ideal. And our ideal is moving toward us. Life feels splendorific. That is the technical description, of course. So how are you doing with your rubber bands and your ideals? Do you have a clear vision of your ideal? Are you loving where you're at? Taking baby steps in the direction of your dreams? Let's get practical. What's your most important goal and what step can you take right now in its direction? My number one goal is insert here. What is it for you and what's your next baby step? Now is always a good time for that baby step, by the way. Go ahead and take it. Enjoy that dynamic tension in the rubber band of your ideal self and your current reality. That's what it's all about. Hold that tension between your ideal and your current reality. How do you do that? Baby steps. So here's to taking them and. And do that in the process of making today another awesome day. Hope you enjoyed. Look forward to sharing more.
