Your most important meeting today

Brian Johnson argues your most important meeting is with yourself, honoring daily fundamentals: exercise, nutrition, meditation, optimism, creativity. He treats these like appointments with a hero, using dynamic tension between where you are and where you want to be to build consistency.

Hey, guys, this is Brian with another Optimal Living 101 video. This one's on your most important meeting today. Your most important meeting today. To give this some context, in last week's goals class, one of the big things we talked about was setting goals that actually make you happy. And then we talked about a model called dynamic tension, where imagine you have a rubber band that you're stretching between your ideal and your current reality. Feel that nice dynamic tension between your ideal, your current reality. And then you resolve that tension by taking consistent baby steps. So last week's class was on goals. This month, we're going to talk about action. And what I like to say is that underneath all of this, all the goals we're setting and everything we want to do in 2013 and beyond are our fundamentals, the things that keep us plugged into the highest version of ourselves. For me, these are things like exercise, nutrition, attention training, like meditation and optimism and gratitude and creativity. Creating these videos on a daily basis, that's one of my primary goals for 2013. Now, if these fundamentals are so important, which I believe they are, it's also really important that we schedule them, we put them into our calendars, right? That's what actually gets done. And the way I like to think about it is this. A lot of times we don't give these priorities. But imagine if you had a meeting with one of your heroes. Would you miss that meeting? And the answer, of course, is no, you'd never even consider missing the meeting. But what we want to do is we want to make these fundamentals working out or meditating or whatever it is we say is most important to us. We've got to treat ourself like we're one of our heroes. Put that into our calendar and don't miss it, and then put other important things into our life. We know that building deep relationships is one of the most important ways to boost our happiness. We'll schedule time for you to deepen your relationships. For me, I walk with our little man, and at 8:45 in the morning, I pick him up and take him for a walk. Now, I was a little bit soft on that because I didn't schedule it and treat it like I do any other meeting I have in my calendar. Now I'm super excited to make it as if I'm meeting one of my heroes, which I am a little man. Light, you're back on. So we want to think about that. That is your most important meeting today, is with yourself, honoring whatever fundamental you've identified as important for you. That's going to help you manage this dynamic tension and achieve your goals and be present for all the other meetings you have. And here's what's interesting when you do that. When you treat yourself like you would one of your heroes, you might find that your heroes actually become your peers, still be your heroes, but they're also your peers. So pretty cool stuff. Let's treat ourselves in our important meetings with ourselves as if we're showing up for a meeting with one of our favorite heroes. That meeting with yourself that's going to keep you plugged in is your most important meeting today. Hope you enjoyed. Look forward to sharing more with you soon. We're going to talk about this idea, all kinds of ideas like this, in our action class later this month. I'll leave a link below. And there you go. Have an awesome day. See ya.
