Brian Johnson traces how purpose shifts across your life. He dropped out of law school, coached little league, started a business. The pattern: hear a call, answer it despite feeling unprepared, find guides and peers, give back, repeat. Each cycle leaves you wiser and more disciplined, but the pain and uncertainty never fully go away.

For me at different stages of my evolution, I had different calls. From the very, very early days where I was called the drop out of law school, and then I coached this little league baseball team. And that led to my first business. There's been this iterative cycles for me of hearing the call, needing to answer it, which is always the hardest part. You leave the known world into the unknown, and you never feel prepared. By definition, you can't be fully prepared. Then you get new guides, you get buddies, you give it back, and then it repeats itself. And hopefully, each cycle through, you get a little bit more wise, you get a little bit more disciplined, you get a little bit more loving toward yourself and others, so you can navigate the inevitable ups and downs. But you're never getting rid of the pain, the uncertainty, and the hard work.
