Holly Furtick explores Psalm 3:5-6, where David says he slept safely and woke unafraid of 10,000 enemies. She argues that declaring faith in the present tense, speaking "I am not afraid" aloud, is how we actually overcome fear.

I came across this verse in Psalm 3, where David gives us this powerful image of how the way you speak to yourself and the way you speak about your situation, it matters. In Psalm 3:5, 6 David said, I lay down and slept, yet I woke in safety, for the Lord was watching over me. I am not afraid of 10,000 enemies who surround me on every side. I like to imagine that these verses take place the morning after their first night on the run, and he woke up alive, and his response was to declare, I am not afraid. David did not say, I will not be afraid. He said, I am not afraid. I guess he thought if he woke up alive and if he survived the night, he would survive no matter what he was up against.
