Welcome to the Homeopathy at Home podcast. I'm Marcus Fernandez and I'm thrilled to have you join me on this journey into the world of homeopathy. This podcast is inspired by my book, Homeopathy at Home, which aims to empower you to take charge of your health using simple, effective homeopathic remedies. Together, we're going to explore how homeopathy can be the key to unlocking your body's innate healing wisdom. Whether you're dealing with everyday ailments such as coughs, colds, strains and sprains, sore throats, or just seeking to enhance your health and well being, this podcast is your guide. So let's dive in and discover the transformative power of homeopathy in your everyday life.
So let's get into earache. So what is earache? Well, earache is an ear pain is common, particularly in young children, but I said also adults can get it as well. It can be painful, but it's not usually a sign of anything more serious. Okay. Most earaches in children or adults are caused by an ear infection, which normally starts to improve after a few days. And a young child might have earache if they rub or pull at their ear, don't react to some sound, just like the night you call their name, they're not reacting to it, or the dog barks or somebody knocks in the door and they don't react. Often can have a temperature as well of 38 degrees or above, or often irritable or restless, you know, a bit cranky and are not quite themselves off, be off their food and they may keep falling over as well, sort of losing their balance. And the ear ache and the pain can affect either one ear or both ears. So again, when we're looking for remedies, we're looking at these characteristic symptoms that people have according to what they're presenting. Okay, so we're going to go through the top seven remedies for earache. So number one, and this is in alphabetical order. Okay, so number one is aconite. Okay. So with aconite you get sudden onset with pains in the ear from dry cold winds, and that can also be getting very cold or even from a shock or fright and it goes to their ears. The ear can look red and is hot with tingling and buzzing feeling inside. Okay. And often they can get a high fever as well, may develop along with it. They can get unbearable sharp pains in the ear and be very agitated, straight, you know, from the beginning, from the onset of this, and often can have great Anxiety, they can be very anxious and very fearful. They have this sense of what's called foreboding or they're going to die, but it's this great anxiety. So they want to be reassured. And often it's the left ear can feel as if there's got a drop of water in it, like there's a drop of water in the left ear can be very restless. And with aconite, remember, the keenness of aconite can be worse at night, especially around midnight. Okay? So if you're a child or somebody has this earache, around that time you think of aconite, or with all these other keynotes that they get very sensitive to noise. And music particularly is unbearable. Okay? They can't stand the sound music. So again, look at the keynotes, what is being presented. But this first remedy we're going to look at is aconite. Second remedy we're going to look at is belladonna. Now, with belladonna, there's often redness of the ear or the cheek at first onset, and it comes on very suddenly. It's a rapid onset, often with a fever. And they can be throbbing and pulsating pains in the ear. Again, this is a keynote for belladonna. And they can often say it feels like the heartbeat. This is what children will say, I can hear my heartbeat. And they can have a humming noise or banging sounds as well. Now, with belladonna can often be right sided. Okay, can be right sided. And they can have swelling swollen glands around the ear, around the neck, and have extreme pain where the person or child will scream out. Even in their sleep, the ear feels very hot to touch, or they say it feels hot inside. And they can have dilated pupils or that typical belladonna, red face, glassy eyes, but their pupils can be dilated. And one of the keynotes of belladonna is it can crave lemons or lemonade. That's all they want, lemons or lemonade. They feel better for it. And they're better for warm wraps, wrapping up warm. Okay, so that's belladonna, I said often with a fevia associated with it. But again, look at those keynotes for belladonna. The next remedy, third remedy we're going to cover is chamomilla. And with chamomilla, it has sharp stitching pains in the ear. They can be so frantic and screaming from the pain, which is intolerable, and they can be angry with the pain as well. So this is like they are really frantic. Chamomile, if you need chamomile. The pain, very cross, can't be appeased and demands instant relief. Okay, There's a lot of anger, nothing you can do. And it can be very capricious. You know, they don't know what they want. You try to give them something, they want that. No, I don't want that. No, I don't want that. Very capricious. They don't know what they want. You can do nothing for them and often can be whining and restless, especially in kids which can't be consoled with the earache. And they have heat, swelling, soreness of the ear, very sensitive to cold winds, very sensitive to cold winds. And the ear can feel blocked inside. Or they can have a roaring in the ears like rushing water or feels like hot water is pouring out of the ear. And people and kids and adults will say this, this is why we're looking for these keynotes or what we call characteristic symptoms. So people can have earaches, but they could all have different symptoms and symptomatology, different causes. And you may need seven different remedies. Okay? So it's not one remedy fits all. So big keynote for chamomilla. One cheek pale, one other cheek red. Might be worse at night and really, really worse for anybody looking in their ear or touching the ear. It's like get away. It's like they get angry, keep away from it. But one thing they are better for is being carried or being rocked. So if you carry them, child for example, or rock them, they will be better from that. As soon as you stop, then it will start again, it'll be screaming. Next remedy, hepar sulph. So this we just talked about the first three remedy, acute remedies. Now we're going to some deeper remedies. So often this can be a deeper remedy, especially for middle ear infections. And hepar sulf earaches can come on from exposure to the cold, slightest draft or to the wind. Okay. But with hepar sulf often will have a discharge coming from the ears like yellow pus, which is foul smelling like old cheese. That's the thing of Happel Soul. It smells like old cheese coming out of their ear. And the ear is incredibly sensitive to touch. And what they describe, the keynote pain is a splinter like pain in the ear. There's like a splinter going in or a very sharp pencil is forced into the ear. So again, when we're looking at, looking at prescribing a remedy, we're looking at these different sensations. What does the sensation feel like or what's what are the modalities? What makes it better or worse? Because this is what helps us decide what remedy to give. Can have deafness in the ear from the accumulation of pus in the ear and again have a roaring noise in the ear. But heposol people are very chilly, very chilly. Very sensitive to cold drafts or cold of any type. But one thing they can have as well is a very offensive smelly breath. It's like it smells a bit, it smells a bit toxic, a bit putrid. But it can be incredibly bad tempered. Hypersensitive to everything and extremely irritable. Okay, extremely irritable. And that will be hepar sulph. And you can see why, why there would be so, so bad tempered. Very, very bad tempered. But remember these splinter like a pencil being a sharp pencil being forced into the ear but incredibly sensitive to that, to the pain. Okay, the next remedy is Merck salt. Now again this is for advanced sort of infection so often again with pus. And this affects the right ear and they can have shooting pains in the right ear which it can extend from the ear to the throat. It's to the Eustachian tube from the ear to the throat. Sometimes you can go ear to the as well. But they see shooting pains that they get and it can be a red hot swelling of the ear often with a sore throat. So this is where you may see somebody has a sore throat as well as a problem with the ear. Then you're going to think of Merck soul and again they have a sensation of cold water running from the ear. The other remember was hot water. This is a sensation of cold water running from the ear. Now remember, you don't have to have all these things. You're looking for three major keynotes or three legged stool. You don't have to have every single one. Now they have pain worse the the heat of the bed, it's worse at night and the ear pain's worse for swallowing. Oh the swallow a sharp shooting pain. And I said a pain can extend from the ear to the teeth or ear to the throat. And they're better for cold applications. Anything cold on the ear they feel better for. And again one of the keynotes for Merck salt is they can have a. They complain of a metallic taste, they can feel metal in the mouth or they can have excessive saliva more than normal. You know the living drool out of the on the pillow or they're drooling a bit, there's a lot of excessive saliva and again can have a intensive breath so it's like quite putrid. So again, it's all quite toxic. Like there's toxicity there. So the next remedy is pulsatilla. So this is often earache with or following a cold. And with pulsatilla, they can have thick, bland, copious, yellow green discharge from the ear. Okay? So it can be coming from the nose as well as coming from the ear. And they have a difficulty hearing. They feel that the ear is blocked up with a fullness sensation. They describe it as like it's full and the ear may be swollen, it may be red with a feeling that something is pressing out. Big keynote feels like something's pressing out of the ear with pulsatella. And often, as you can see from the picture, typical picture can look like very tearful, very weepy, very clingy. They feel abandoned. Nobody's looking after them. They just crave affection. You want to. And you want to cuddle them. You want to look after them with chamomile that you don't. You just like, keep away from me. But with a cat, pulsatella, you want to look after them, you want to care for them. They're all very weepy and feeling sorry for themselves. That's a really pulsatilla state. And the big keynote for pulsatilla, their intolerance to heat. They need fresh air. So the worse for warm rooms, stuffy rooms, they need the flow of air, they need. They're better for cool, open air, even having the window open. They need the air or they feel better for going outside. The worse in the evening, worse if you leave them alone. You can't leave them alone. You've got to look after them, got to be near you. But again, another keynote is that they're thirstless, they don't want to drink, they don't want any fluid. You're trying to give them a drink. They don't want anything. But as I said, belladonna, they often want things like lemonade and lemons. And the symptoms can be changeable. You know, the symptoms can be changeable. So it can change the pain, can change, it can move around. So it's very changeable with pulsatilla, which again is a keynote for pulsatilla because pulsatilla, as a plant is called the windflower. And it moves and it change. It moves around. So it's very changeable. Which is the remedy for pulsatella. Again, big remedies for kids as well, particularly with earaches. The next remedy is silica. Okay, so Silica. And silica is indicated for middle and lighter stage of a cold accompanied by an ear infection. Okay. So this is often good especially for children who get repeated ear infections. It's like quite sickly, they just don't have the grit. They don't seem to be able to throw things off. They keep coming back in again and again and can be quite, as I said, quite sickly. This is often left earaches and can have perforated eardrum and things don't quite resolve themselves. You know, they can feel like they're still a little bit deaf or blocked up feeling after an earache, after a cold, which is better. If they yawn, it's like releasing something or swallowing. It's like releasing something in the eustachian tube. But again they can have a foul smelling discharge, cheesy foul smelling discharge. Well often with crusts around the ear that's come from there. Not very nice and they can have very itchy. The ears can really itch when they swallow. They want to really get bore in there and even do that in their sleep. They're trying to bore into their ear. They can have hissing noises in the ear and generally they're physically very weak and very tired. Like I said, they're lost. They just don't have that grit. Very chilly, extremely chilly. Better for warm coverings. And they're worse for cold air cold for around drafts as well. Worse for any drafts. And this is a good remedy when you've had earaches or ear problems ever since having vaccination. Ill effects of vaccination. After vaccination of any vaccination, they may have ear issues. Okay. Or earaches. So that's silica. So again this more for that chronic. Silica is the chronic of pulsatilla. Okay. So it's a remedy that like I said, they haven't quite recovered. They haven't. It's like a convalescent remedy. They haven't quite got over that earache or ear problems or ear issues and often silicon can help really shift them and back to a state of vitality and health. Now the final remedy, this is actually number eight. I said the top seven. So we've done the top seven. So we've done aconite, belladonna, chamomile, we've done hepar salt, we've done Merck salt, we've done silica and now we're looking at the ABC remedy. So this is number eight. But I wanted to add this one in because it's really important because this is a combination of aconite, belladonna and chamomilla. Now you can buy these remedies as combinations. Like you can get combination for teething, combination for hay fever. We can get the ABC remedy combination from the homeopathic pharmacist. And this is a combination of aconite, belladonna and chamomilla, used a lot with people. And this is really good for an insult intense earache where there's no clear picture. So you think, oh my God, it looks a little bit like aconite, looks a bit like camera. You know, you see a mixture, you can't really see a clear picture. Then give abc because ABC is a really good remedy which will deal with that intensity of the earache, especially in the middle of the night, as I put in the middle of the night scenario. These things I know with my kids, always things happen in the middle of the night. It was colic when there were babies in the middle of the night, earaches, fevers. Now in the middle of the night, it's always two o' clock in the morning. You're searching for your remedy kit or your remedies. This is a really good remedy like arnica to have at hand for the middle of the night for kids when you have any things like earache. So have that, you know, close by. But once the pitch, once the pain has subsided, then you'll see a clear remedy picture will emerge. So give that ABC and then the often will fall asleep and then the next day or the next morning you may see a clearer picture. What a mercy. So when you have an acute earache and acute pain, you can give the remedy. And again you look at the 30C potency because that's in most remedy kits. If you got a 200, that's great because it's more acute and you can give it every hour until it subsides. Okay. Often what happens when you take the remedy? The child or the person often will fall asleep and this is when you know that the remedy is working. Same with a fever, same with any acute illness. It's a really good sign. After they take the remedy, often they will fall asleep seeing, particularly with children. So you can give every hour. If it's more chronic, then you can give like a 30c potency or one remedy, one tablet, three times a day for the couple of days and then assess it, stop if it's improved. But that's a bit of a rule of thumb that you can use. So I hope that was helpful and useful. Again, you'll find a lot of these remedies during these sessions are coming up again and again because they've got huge uses that what we call polycaract remedies. They have many, many, many uses. But when you the art of home prescribing is trying it out, try out. I say to all of you, if you haven't got one, get a remedy kit for one of the homeopathic pharmacists. Wherever you are in the they're invaluable. And the more that you use it, the more you'll get confidence and you see homeopathy working. It's not an idea, it's not a belief. You'll see how effective these remedies can be in acute situations. So I say all of you, please use them, try it out. That's how you get good at home prescribing. Get a good understanding how the remedies work and how you see the vital force responds so, so well to these remedies. As I said all the time, all the healing wisdom you ever going to need is within you. And these remedies are like keys to a lot that unlock that. And it's been like a muscle. The more that you use it, the more that you use your stimulate that vital force to work, then the stronger it becomes and the more it can deal with acute situations. So it doesn't lead into chronic situations because if you suppress acute symptoms, often they will go chronic eventually. Because these symptoms is the body way of saying, hey look, there's an issue here. Deal with it and you deal with it and then it goes back to health and vitality. And often you see, especially with children, I've experienced it not only in my own practice of running a mother and baby clinic for many years, but also with my own children, often with these acute earaches or fevers, teething often, they'll make a huge developmental leap after having these acute situations. So this is why it's really useful that you help them through it and help the body heal itself so it doesn't get stuck in it or it doesn't lead to more chronic issues further down the line. Now, again, I would say to all of you, when in doubt, always contact a qualified practitioner to help. And especially if it's reoccurring and you're dealing with eq, but they keep coming back, then you may need some deeper empathic treatment. So I'd always say please, you know, access a qualified practitioner. But you'll be surprised what you can do with these remedies. Now there's more than the top seven or eight that I've just talked about. But these, you've got to know these remedies because these will deal with most of any earache or ear issues that you may have. Thank you so much for joining me.
