8 Sept 2023 · 14 min
Podcast episode by Marcus Fernandez (Homeopathy at Home) explaining how to use homeopathic remedies for acute sprains and strains. Presents a rule-of-thumb prescribing approach (commonly 6C or 30C potencies, one dose every ~15 minutes for acute situations, then repeat as needed) and details six primary remedies (Arnica montana; Bellis perennis; Bryonia; Rhus toxicodendron; Ruta graveolens; Strontium carb) with their keynotes, typical modalities (worse/better for touch, motion, heat/cold), and situational uses (e.g., gardener’s overexertion, tendon injuries, ankle sprains). Ends with promotion of his book Homeopathy at Home and show-note resources.

Together, we're going to explore how homeopathy.
Can be the key to unlocking your body's innate healing wisdom. Whether you're dealing with everyday ailments such as coughs, colds, strains and sprains, sore throats, or just seeking to enhance your health and wellbeing, this podcast is your guide. So let's dive in and discover the transformative power of homeopathy in your everyday life. Hi there and welcome to another home prescribing video.
Today we're going to talk about sprains and strains. So homeopathy is so, so effective for sprains and strains. Things that you get all the time, like, you know, you may sprain your back or str. Strain it, you know, picking something up or, or you feel worse after exercise. You may have exercised your mind. I've done it for a while and you think, right, that's it, I'm going to hit the gym or I'm going to go for that run. And then you straighten something like a tendon or your back, or you just feel really not very good. And this is where homeopathy comes in so, so well. So we're going to go through some of the top six remedies for sprains and strains. Now, before we go into the remedies, I want to talk about homeopathic prescribing. So often get a lot of questions about what potency to take of the remedy. How often should I take it? What? Well, if you go to the video of top tips for home prescribing, I go into extensive detail about different potencies, about how to prescribe it, about how to take acute cases, how to get the information in order to prescribe. But this is a rule of thumb. I say use a 6C or 30C potencies of the homeopathic remedy that you're going to use. Why? Because those potencies are available over the counter. Most health food stores you can also get from the homeopathic pharmacist, but also remedy kits. If you purchase a remedy kit on often, you'll find the 6 or 30 C potency within those kits. And I would say as a rule of thumb, one dose every 15 minutes for any acute situation. So you'll give one dose, say it's a 6C or 30C, and then repeat it 15 minutes later. If it's quite acute for three or four doses, and then you may repeat it the next day, you may be 50% better. You may just give two or three doses of the remedy or until symptoms improve. And that's the idea about potency, is that you're just trying to stimulate the body to heal itself. It's like a key to, to unlock. And you're trying to get the vital force to do, to just to kick in and to start the healing process. And you're looking for the keynotes of the remedy. Every time we go through some of these videos, you're looking for the keynotes when you're prescribing, and this is what I'm teaching you today, is the keynotes of the remedies. Okay, so it's like if you had to play a song and you play three notes, then you would recognize that song. It's the same in homeopathy. We're looking for keynotes in order to prescribe, or what we call the three legged stool, the three characteristic symptoms of the remedy. In order to prescribe the. Now this is for home prescribing. These are things that can happen like acute situations every day at home or at the gym and different places. So if it persists, if the sprain or the strain persists, then you may need to see a qualified homeopathic practitioner in order to get to the root of the problem. So if these remedies work and then they stop working, then you may need more of a chronic case being taken to deal with your situation. So the first remedy we're gonna talk about is arnica Montana. The number one remedy that I think everybody should know about, you should carry it in your bag. You, you have it in the car at home, we have it in the kitchen on the shelf, ready for the. Any sort of like bangs and bumps and bruises or strains that the kids have. So it's a remedy that you really need to know. And this is the first remedy that's often given immediately any type of injury occurs. And one of the things that people say who need arnica, they might have a, they've pulled something, they may have pulled the back or they pull the tendon or whatever they've done. And they'll go, I'm okay, I'm all right, I'm all right. After the injury. And that is a keynote of arnica. Because often it's about shock. People have shocked, you know, that they've pulled something. It's like, no, no. But also they don't want you near you. And that's one of the keynotes again of arnica is they don't want you to look at their injury or examine it. They just, they want to just like hold themselves. So often this is good for muscle or tendon injury after prolonged or unaccustomed exertion. So I said that, you know, you may think, right, I'm going to hit the gym, I've done the gym for a while, I'm going to go for that run. You do your 10 mile run and then you're paying the price for it afterwards because you may have pulled something pulling muscle, your back feels stiff or, or whatever it is. And this is the first remedy you give is arnica. And often with arnica they can have swelling or soreness and bruising, inflammation of the soft tissues, especially around the joints. But as I said, they're very fearful of touch. They don't want it to be examined or you to go near them. They'll hold the affected part. And they're worse for touch, they're worse for pressure, the worse for cold, the worse for any sort of motion, worse for jarring, that could be the back or wherever it is. Better for rest, better for lying down. Okay, so they want to be rest, they want to lie down and they don't want any fuss or bother. So the first remedy you think of is arnica montana. The next remedy is Bellis perennis, the daisy. Now if you press on a daisy on the ground, what happens? You'll see it, you press on it, say with your foot and you see it and it bounces back up again. So this is a good, what we call the doctrine of signatures around the remedy. So this is often classed as a deeper arnica. Okay, it's a deeper arnica. And it's the first remedy to think of in injury to deeper tissues of the muscles. So this is sprains with deep soreness in the muscles or wherever it is, or the back, bruising, stiff stiffness and coldness of the affected part. So whatever they've strained, then you'll find that they is coldness of the strain the back, they feel a sensation of coldness in that area or the strain that the leg or the strain the muscles, they have this sensation of coldness. Again, keynote, as we talked about. And this is really useful for people who garden. This is the gardener's remedy. So this is people that may, you know, winters come and Spring's here now and they start to tidy up the garden, but they really suffer hours later or in the evening or the next day from over exertion. They've overworked parts that haven't been worked for a while. So this is a great remedy for that. Bellis parenus. Also good for chronic issues like carpal tunnel syndrome, any repetitive strain injuries. Bellous parinis. And the keynote, it's worse for cold, worse for any cold bathing. Better for touch. So worse for touch, better for heat. Now, this remedy is between ruta, which you're going to learn about in a moment, with weakness in the joints and a lame feeling, and the sore bruise feeling of arnica. So you may give arnica first. Doesn't quite do it. Then you follow it with ruta. It doesn't quite. To finish it off, then think of bellis parenis. This is a great remedy and often people don't remember it, but it's a really good remedy to know. For sprains and strains, the next remedy is bryonia. So this is indicated in injury to the joints where arnica fails. You may have given arnica and it hasn't got there. He hasn't dealt with it properly as he's still in pain. And for strained and pulled muscles, okay. And they have severe stitching, sharp or tearing pain. Worse for any movement. This is the biggest keynote for Bryonia. They are worse for any moment. So they strain the back. It's like, oh, it's like can't move. It's like worse. Any movement and they're holding it and it's like they don't want you around. And it's doing a lot of pain. Okay. A lot of pain. So they're worse for any movement at all. Okay. At all. So it's better for being still. Better for cold, better for pressure. Okay. They feel better if they hold it and there's pressure on it. Better for bandaging. So if it's, you know, I don't know, the knee or somewhere, but if it's bandaged, it's the pressure and a keynote. Better for lying on the painful side. So if they've injured an area, they feel better if they're lying on it. Okay. Better for lying on the painful side. And they can be extremely irritable with the pain. Very irritable with the pain. Like a bear with a sore head. That's that expression. It's like, what's that noise? It's like they just want to be alone. They don't want to be bothered, extremely irritable. Okay, another keynote that could be very thirsty. That's a keynote of Bryonia, but you don't necessarily need that. But you get the idea of Bryonia. Okay, very painful. And again, it could be anything in the back, the neck, the legs, whatever they've strained and sprained. Very, very, very irritable, but worse for any movement. Next memory, Ross Tox. This is for injuries, for overuse. Again, it can be over exertion, it can be running, it can be anything where you overexerted yourself and heavy lifting. So they have a stiff feeling in their muscles and their joints and affects the joints often more on the left hand side. You'll find with Rustox. But the stiff feeling is a primary symptom for this remedy. Rus Tox, primary keynote. And with the pain that they have, they also have restlessness. Again, another big keynote. Rust Tox is extremely restless. They can't find the right position to get any relief. They're moving around. Could be at night in bed. Wherever they are, they can't get. They've got to get up. They can't rest in any position. Very restless. Opposite to Bryonia, which you will not see Bryonia move at all. They'll be perfectly still. Okay, perfectly still. So they have pain and stiffness worse during first moving, but better for continued moving. Now this is again a big keynote. So you may ask the person, you may be giving them a remedy and say, you know, are you worse for movement? They go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Now that could be Bryonia or Rus Tox. Because they'll both say that, oh yeah, yeah, I'm worse for movement. But then the next question you say is, what about if you continue to move? How's that? The brownie say, no, my goodness. They couldn't imagine anything worse and be very irritable. Just asking you this, asking them that question. Rus Tox will say, yeah, yeah, once I get moving, I'm very stiff, but once I get moving, I'm walking around. Then the pain seems to get better. Okay, so it's what's called the Rusty Gate remedy. So the more that it moves, the more that it limbers up, the better that it is. And it's better for applied heat or for hot bathing. Again, another big keynote for Rustox. Better for heat, applied heat or for hot bathing, they feel the stiffness goes and they feel a lot, lot better. So that's Rust Tox. So sometimes you're down to Bryonium. Rus Tox. Then that's how you differentiate between them? The next remed ruta. Okay, Ruta grave. This is the main remedy for injuries to tendons, to joints and bones. And this is sore bruise pain with lameness and restlessness. Okay. Severe sprains when the person has torn or wrenched a tendon, split a ligament or the bruise of the bone coverings. Like you know, where the shin, where the skin and the bone meet, anything where it's been bruised from that root is good for that. But think about it for these tendons and joints and muscles. So sharp shooting pain and stiffness. So you'll think of arnica Rust tox. Recent or old injury is to the knee or the elbow. So think of like a tennis elbow where there's been repetitive movements, repetitive strains. I've seen it in bricklayers, people who are laying bricks over and over again where they're overusing, that's one part. So anything where there's repetitive strain router is great and you can give it almost as a prophylactic before exercise, before they play tennis or whatever it is. I don't know, even golf may have that effect. But anything where there's over strain of the joint or the tendons or that position really number one good remedy for eye strain. Okay. This is where people over strain their eyes that could be reading fine print or doing very detailed fine work anywhere where they're over straining their eyes. Ruta is the number one remedy for that. And it's worse for cold, worse for damp, worse exertion and worse for lying on the painful part. Now remember, Bryonia was better for lying on the painful part. This is the opposite. It's worse for lying on the painful part. So again you can see how you start to differentiate between the remedies. Better for warmth, better for rest, better for gentle motion and better for rubbing. So again, similar to Rustox. But you've got to see how you can differentiate between them. And this is always used after arnica. So I say arnica is always probably the first remedy you're going to give in. Sprains and strains followed on them by the next indicated remedy. And finally strontium carb. And I'll put this in because this is a really, really effective remedy for sprains of the ankle, especially where there's repeated br of the ankles and it's like almost they've got weak ankles. Now Calcard is a really good constitutional remedy for that. But Strontium Card is a little lesser known remedy. But it's so, so effective. I found in clinical practice and this is where the sprain, the ankle and the ankle can swell and they get edema fluid around the ankle, ankle joint. But they have icy cold feet. They can feel like their feet are like blocks of ice. And they can also get chronic spasm of the ankle joint as well. It goes into spasm with leg and foot cramps as well. Okay. With leg and foot cramps. And it's good if had severe strain sprain cutely or it's good for chronic sprains that they've had. It's like they've tried other remedies, but there's like the weakness there. So you can try the arnic. You try different remedies, ruta, but it hasn't quite got there. It hasn't quite dealt with it properly. Well, this is where you would look at strontium carb. Very effective. Better immersing in hot water. So they're better if you get a bowl of warm water and they soak their ankles in that. They get a lot of relief from that. Worse for cold, worse for touch and worse for walking. Okay. They just want to rest it. But again, I wanted to put strontium carb in there because it's such an effective remedy for sprains of the ankles. So I hope you enjoyed that. I hope that was beneficial. I hope you learned a lot there. They're the top six remedies that you should know about. So it was arnica, bellis, perennis, bryonia, rus, tox, ruta and strontium carb. There's lots of remedies in the materia Medica. Thousands of remedies in Materia Medica. But we just talked about the top six that you need to know for sprains and strains. So again, try the remedies. That's how you learn homeopathy, by. By giving it, by taking themselves. That's how you learn about potency and frequency, is by using it. But this will deal with most acute sprains and strains that you'll find at the home. And the more that you learn homeopathy, the more that you get empowered and the more that changes the health of yourself, for your family, for your friends, for your community. So please use it.
