Welcome to the Homeopathy at Home podcast. I'm Marcus Fernandez and I'm thrilled to have you join me on this journey into the world of homeopathy. This podcast is inspired by my book, Homeopathy at Home, which aims to empower you to take charge of your health using simple, effective homeopathic remedies. Together we're going to explore how homeopathy can be the key to unlocking your body's innate healing wisdom. Whether you're dealing with everyday ailments such as coughs, colds, strains and sprains, sore throats, or just seeking to enhance your health and well being, this podcast is your guide. So let's dive in and discover the transformative power of homeopathy in your everyday life. Today's subject is insomnia. This is one of my favorite areas. This area around sleep and homeopathy can be so effective for insomnia and the remedies that associated with that. So we're going to go through some today. Again, this list is not exclusive. Okay. This is, I'm just picking the six of the top remedies because there's plenty of remedies, so many remedies. But these are going to be specifically for sleep. Okay. And for insomnia. So let's jump into insomnia and the sort of six top remedies that we've selected for insomnia. Okay, so what is insomnia? So we just like, what is insomnia? Well, you'll have insomnia if you regularly find it hard to go to sleep, wake up several times during the night, lie awake at night, wake up early and can't go back to sleep, still feel tired after waking up, finding hard to nap during the day. Even though you're very feeling very tired, you can feel very irritable as well during the day and find it difficult to concentrate during the day because you're so tired. Now listen, we've all experienced this at some point of our lives, we've gone through this. And as you know, sleep is so crucial to our health and well being. You know, they use sleep deprivation as a form of torture and you know, if you've been up all night or you've been nursing a loved one or somebody's sick, or, you know, you've been jet lagged, you know how you feel, you feel pretty bad and that we need to sleep. It's one of the most cornerstones of our health. I talk about this, you know, the sort of four pillars, meditation, exercise, diet, sleep. Sleep is the final One, well, sorry, the fourth one, which is the pillar. It is so, so crucial that we get it right. But as I said, there's many reasons why people get insomnia and that's what we're going to look into today. So the most common causes is stress, anxiety, depression, noise can be a big factor. Again, we'll talk about this. Why people are more sort of sensitive to noise as well at certain times than others. A room that's too hot or too cold, uncomfortable beds, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine drugs, recreational drugs, jet lag and shift work. Jet lag or shift work. So these are often the common causes why people get it. And now we're just going to go into some of these remedies that you can take for some of these causes behind it. So let's look at the first remedy. So the first remedy that we've got here is Arsenicum album. So this is a great remedy for insomnia from anxiety. Now on Arsenicum album. Anxiety. We covered this when we did anxiety in previous sessions. But. But it could be anything from, you know, worry about financial loss or, you know, worried about their health. But basically with our Seneca, it's about anxiety and it's sleeplessness from anxiety, you know, nervous exhaustion, restlessness, and you have to get in out of the bed. They walk around, they feel better from walking around, but incredibly restless. And often they'll wake around midnight. So this is one of the keynotes of Arsenica. We talked about keynotes before. If you had to play a song and you play a few notes, that would be the keynote. And they can be awake until 3am okay, they can wake up until 3am they get anxiety waking from frightful dreams and they have some bad dreams and that can wake them up in this state of anxiety. It's like this adrenaline rush and the fear of being alone, fear of death. They can have a fear about despair, about recovery if they're not well. But often if you're unwell and they've got, they've got insomnia and they're anxious, it's because they don't. They feel they're going to die, they're not going to make it. So I said worse, around or after midnight, be keynote for arsenicum. Worse. Lying on the right side, they feel worse if they lie on the right side. Better for company, better for heat, better for warm drinks and better for warm food as well. So often can be very, very chilly, so they want to wrap up warm. But arsenicum is a great remedy, one of the many remedies for anxiety. And there's other. But this is a really big remedy to know about from sleepiness, from anxiety. Okay, so let's look at the next remedy we've got here, which is Coculus. Now this is a fantastic remedy. Now Coculus is great for loss of sleep. So this, this is where people have got mental and physical exhaustion due to loss of sleep from nursing loved ones. So they could have been up all night looking after the child, baby, or an elderly relative or a loved one, and they've been up all night. And this could have gone on for a period of time, but there is exhausted or night shifts as well. People doing a night shift and they just can't sleep. So as well, they can have sleeplessness from thoughts of business and work, anxiety, restlessness. And they can have anxious and frightening dreams. Okay, Anxious and frightening dreams. And often their sleep is interrupted so they'll suddenly start and they salute and they wake up. And this is, I'd say, one of the best remedies that you can take for jet lag. You know, when the whole site people's cycles are out. Sleep cycles use this many, many time with patients and clients when they've been suffering from jet lag or from traveling, when people done a lot of traveling. It's just such a great remedy for that. And it resets the system. Remember, when you take the remedy, it takes the body back to the position where it can decide again, it just almost like resets the system. The body knows what to do. As I said, all the natural healing wisdom you're ever going to need is within you. And these remedies are keys to a lock. They turn the key to lock and reset the system. The thing about Coculus, they fear that they're not going to get enough sleep. Okay. They fear that they're going to get enough sleep. I've seen this a lot with new mothers and they're getting obsessed about how much sleep they're getting that they can't do because they need to get the sleep. It's like they get pretty very much obsessed by that and this fear of not getting enough sleep. And often they can describe this strange, rare, peculiar symptom where they feel this empty, hollow feeling in the body. It says, I just feel like, it's like hollow. My head, it feels hollow on my stomach. I've got hollow feeling in my stomach or in my legs. It's a very strange rambicity symptom. But this will key you in to the remedy Cocculus. Great, great, great remedy. Next Remedy kefir over excitement. Look at this picture of this lady. Over excitement. So keffi are made from coffee. So this is insomnia from over excitement. Too much mental activity and rush of ideas and flow of ideas. It's like they can't stop it. And that could be from good news like we call it ailments from good news where they've had some great news and they're all, they're so excited. It could be good for kids as well. You know for Christmas or their birthday they get themselves in such a state of excitement that they can't switch it off. It can also be as well people get some not so good news and then go into this rush of mental activity. But what they often describe is that they can't stop thinking. They can't switch it off. I can't switch it off. And what's happened? The whole nervous system is over sensitive. It's just oversens and wound up and all the senses become more acute. Smell, taste, you know, auditory. So they can awake at the slightest sound something happens, ding. Some outside, ding, bang. Or awake. So they're really, really hypersensitive to anything, any slight or even the clock ticking downstairs or the clock ticking in the room. They have to put everything away. It's just too much. But great agitation, the tossing, the turning in the bed, the restless. They can't try this way, try that way. But it's the flow of ideas, you know and excitement also this is a good remedy for sleeplessness after too much coffee. So too much stimulation. Too much coffee you can give kefir. Another one as well is too much wine. And we're talking about, you know, alcohol can really aggravate your sleep. It affects the melatonin within the body. It can have a really big effect on the system. So, so but this particularly is for over too much coffee and too much wine. So if you are having problems with insomnia or you can't sleep, don't have caffeine too near to before you go to bed, okay? Reduce that caffeine because you're in the overstimulated sets. So the worst for noise, worse for touch even sometimes the skin can be hypersensitive. It's like if you share in a bed with somebody who needs caffeine it's like they can't be near you. Oh don't touch me. I can't relax. I can't, you know, can't sleep. But and also it's a good little tip for menopausal insomnia from Menopause, perimenopausal or menopausal. When people can't sleep, there's other remedies for that, but it can be good for that as well. Good remedy. Kefir very excited. As you can see from this picture, this lady is incredibly excited. Okay, K Life Foss. Now this is a good remedy for insomnia from over mental work. So this is overworking and it's excessive mental exertion. So again, the mind, particularly in the brain and the whole nervous system then becomes weak. And this is like what we call nervous insomnia. Again, sleep is from an overactive mind. When they've worn out the mind, it could be from over studying, too much studying. So this could be good for students. It could be at work, anything they've got to do at work. And they've been overusing the mind too much. There could be a deadline or they've been, you know, that whole week and there's been a deadline that they've had to, you know, really sort of work quite intensely. Also from worry as well. And that could be from work or all the different things. But it's basically, if you see the picture again, it's like the mind, it's the brain, it just feels weak and they get quite exhausted. They get. They'll just feel like this, can't do anything. Even physically. They're not up to the task, just feel worn out from it. So they'll be very restless during sleep again. So a lot of these insomnia remedies are like this. But also they feel heat. So they'll be throwing the covers off because they feel hot and they feel heat. This is also a remedy for night terrors as well. So they can have night terrors and sleepwalking. So they'll be walking around. It's like something's not quite switching off and wandering around the house sleepwalking. They won't realize it because they're asleep, but it's like there's something just quant quite, you know, sort of switch off. The better for warmth, better for rest. Often in KLI fast, they just want to go to sit somewhere very quiet. They feel like the brain just needs to. It feels this needs to relax. It can't take any more stimulation. So they just can't think even to read hurts. They just need to relax that brain. So the worse for any mental and worse for any physical exertion. Great remedy. K live Great, great remedy. You can also get it in the homeopathic potency or as a cell Salt or tissue salt. Really great remedy. Okay, so remember all these remedies we're going through. This is for the acute things of insomnia. Not talking. I mean these remedies can be used in chronic but we're talking about the acute remedies for insomnia. Can't sleep Ignatia from worrying, grief. Now we've covered Ignatia, it's come up quite a few times over these Facebook lives. Such a big remedy. You can see now how big these remedies are. We call them Polycrest. Many uses. And with Ignatia it's from worry and grief. So often this is insomnia or sleeplessness from emotional conflict. So this could be grief. You could have split up with somebody, lost somebody. It could be a death of somebody disappointed, love just hasn't worked out or worrying about relationships with others. But there's this indecision going on, this conflict in of ideas. It's going around. This is what's preventing them from sleeping. So again a very keyed up nervous system. And what you found with Ignatia they can have these jerking limbs that going to sleep. It's like the sleep and then the limbs jerk or suddenly jump again it's like the whole nervous system because again the nervous system as you said is very keyed up, very sensitive. So the slightest noise, they sleep very, very lightly. They just don't go into that deep sleep. And as you know in sleep there's all these different stages that we go into. And if you ever monitor your sleep and I monitor my sleep, I use a tracking device monitoring my sleep. I've got a bit obsessed by over the years is how much you're awake and you don't realize it during sleep. But also you know your REM sleep and then you deep sleep when the real hurry and sort of the healing goes on and restoration of the body during that time of deep sleep. So we need to go into those deep sleep levels. Again frequent changing in the bed as they're thinking and worrying and they're moving around. And a little keynote for Ignatia, they can whimper during their sleep. So if they're sleeping with somebody they'll say yeah you're whimpering last night. So again the little keynote to look out for. But they can have dreams about grief, death of loved ones, broken relationships. So remember Ignatia great from insomnia, sleeplessness from worry and grief. And I think again this picture is a good sums up really that Ignatia state. Next remedy Nux vomica overwork so nux vomica unable to switch off from business and work, they can't switch off. This is the business person's remedy. Okay, business person's remedy. So a typical nux vomica will get up in the morning feeling pretty groggy, maybe a bit nauseous, feel sick, and they need three cups of coffee and maybe four cigarettes or vapes or whatever people do these days just to get them going. You know, they need those double expresses to charge the system back home again, get that liver active and get that system activated again. And so, you know, these nuts, pharmacists drink a lot of coffee. They need to be stimulated. But often they need alcohol to wind them themselves down in the evening. So they use stimulants to get them going in the morning, in the daytime and, and keep them going. But then they need alcohol in the evening just to wind the system down. But the thing is with that is that once the alcohol wears off during the night, they'll wake up again back in that whole, that whole state of overactive mind and thinking. So mental strain causes this insomnia. Nox vomica from again, ideas around work or business. The focus for nux vomicant is often around business or around work, very much work when they need it. So remember, you just can go into these states, say you start your own business up, you can go into these states where you've got to be focused. Or it could be a new job or something where it's requiring you to be really sort of very involved in the work that you're doing. Almost like 24 7. Now, again with nux pharmacare, they can awake, but they awake also, again with a fright. Oh, so somebody's in the room. They thought they heard somebody in the room. But again, this nervous system is very, very keyed up. It's related to Ignatia botanically. So there's some overlap there with that keyed up nervous system, but a different causation. Why they get into these states, will awake at 3am and lie awake with a rush of thoughts until morning. They cannot get to sleep, you know, and again, if they've been drinking alcohol, whenever the alcohol, so it's working its way out of the system, that's when they'll wake up. But they'll lay there, just cannot come down to be able to go into that sleep state. So again, nux vomica is good for sleeplessness or insomnia when there's been abuse of alcohol or coffee or tobacco or drugs. So they do have a tendency to use drugs either to get them stimulated or to bring them down. And again, nux vomica works very much on the nervous system, but also the liver. So big liver remedy. So they'll have dreams of hustle and bustle, very, very busy dreams and anxious dreams as well. They're not quite completing the task. Remember, they could be in a very competitive situation, so they're having dreams about that as well. And as I mentioned earlier, they'll wake feeling unrefreshed, feeling nauseous, feeling sick again, often it's the liver, but they're better for naps. So these are the people say, yeah, yeah, I need my power nap in the afternoon. Need my power now. Lunch is for wimps. I'll have another cup of coffee. That's the sort of nux vomicus state that people can get into. So what have we looked at so far? Arsenicum insomnia from anxiety. We looked at coculus insomnia from loss of sleep, like nursing loved ones, looking after somebody, night shifts, jet lag, didn't we? We looked at Ignatia from grief and from worry, worrying about things. We looked at K lifos, too much mental work, overactive mind from studying, but exhaustion, physical and mental exhaustion. And we've looked at nux vomica from overwork. Now, did I count all those right? Arsenicum coculus keffiyeh. We missed out. Keffiyeh from over excitement. Again. You can use this, like all these remedies for children, for the elderly, for anybody, if they're indicating these keynote remedies. But what I share, those are some six top remedies. There's other remedies, obviously for insomnia. There's so many remedies, but it depends on the situation. I just wanted to share with you some top six that you should definitely, definitely know about and will be useful. Okay, so some tips for better sleep. So it's not just about taking the remedy. Obviously that's going to reset the system. So it's a lot better. But I think all of us should be getting better sleep. I think it's so key, as I mentioned, the very beginning, for health and wellbeing. So here's some tips. Get natural sunlight in the daytime, bright light if there's any sun. Don't get that machine in the uk, but when we do get it, it's good to go out, especially in the morning, get that, that sunshine, it keeps your circadian rhythm healthy. And that light exposure, it keeps. Improves your daytime energy as well as your nighttime Sleep quality and duration. Reduce your blue lights in the exposure in the evening. What does that mean? It means don't use your laptop, don't be using your phone, don't be looking at social media. You know, it's like you've got to really have this nighttime routine. Pre sleep, pre sleep. Don't consume caffeine late in the day. We talked about this because it's going to be still in your system. Avoid alcohol if you can, if you're suffering from insomnia because it affects the nighttime melatonin production. Mentioned that before as well. Reduce irregular or long daytime sleeps. Notice I'm a big fan of naps. If I can get a nap, I love it. Siesta. It's the Spanish side of me. We love siestas and I always say it's the best sleep of the day. But even a 20 minute little nap can have a huge effect on your system. Try to have sleep at regular times. Get into a regular sleep schedule. So imperative. Your body likes rhythm. Body likes rhythm. Same thing about kids, you know, get them into. You get them into a rhythm. It's about rhythm. The body wants rhythm. Another big one. Optimize your bedroom environment. There should be no electric electronic devices in your bedroom. It should be your sanctuary. No TVs, no electric blankets, nothing that can create any electromagnetic field which can affect you. With all my clients, I always ask them, do you sleep? Where's your mobile phone when you sleep? And say, oh yes, beside my pillow. Always beside me. On the, on the cabinet. You do not want your mobile phone anywhere near your head during sleep, especially if you're suffering from insomnia. Switch it off, put it on airplane or whatever you want to do with it, but don't have it around your head. And I wouldn't even have it in the bedroom. It's got to be your sanctuary. Really, really important. We can go. I could go on and on about sleep, about even your bed and the type of bed, you know, something we should all really look at. It's really, really important. Even the temperature as well is important as you, as you probably know to get a really good temperature. And they're not too hot, not too well, actually. I say not too cold, but actually I think cold's better. I mean, look at the research. Cold is a lot better for sleep. There's a great book by Dr. Martin Walker, why do we sleep? I mentioned this book a lot. Is so good. You can see them on YouTube as well. Very, very good. I think it's called why do you sleep. If Rebecca, if you could put that in the chat box. Great, great book. Now the tip. Don't eat late in the evening again. Your body needs time to digest the food. Otherwise it's digesting the food while you're trying to sleep. And as we said, you know, have a pre sleep routine. Relax in some way. Meditate before you go to sleep. Whatever you want to do, but relax. Take a bath. But have this pre sleep routine if you can. If you're suffering from this, but I think you should do it anyway. I think it's really, really important. And getting to that rhythm, I think is absolute.
