Hope Lanter explains whether hearing aids damage your hearing. Receivers are capped at safe levels, and for most people they preserve usable hearing rather than cause further loss. Only severe-to-profound cases might face additional risk from louder devices.

Will wearing hearing aids make your hearing loss worse? The short answer is no. The reason is because the receiver or the speaker that puts sound into your ear is often limited at levels that are deemed to be safe with long-term wear. For someone who has a more severe to profound hearing loss, they may have to wear a hearing aid that has a much louder receiver or speaker. What that means is that it can, in some cases, create the risk that if if you wear it, you can also create more hearing loss. But in those cases, generally what's happening is if you don't wear a hearing aid, you don't hear really anything at all either. So it's something where the risk is worth it. But in general, for the absolute majority of people wearing hearing aids, wearing a hearing aid only helps you to have usable hearing the rest of your life. It does not cause more hearing loss.
