Who Is The Best ELD Provider?

Hunter Nelson ranks five ELD providers for truckers and fleet managers. Motive tops the list at roughly $150 upfront plus $50 monthly, with insurance discounts up to 30% if you add a dash cam. Samsara costs more upfront around $1,260, while Geotab and Verizon run $35 to $40 monthly.

Hey, guys, I'm Hunter with Nelson Insurance. I am going to get into who has the best DLD here. So let's get into it. All right, so I got five people I'm comparing here. I'm gonna save the best for the last and then just kind of start with my lower end of the list here. When I am going through these things, there's not a whole lot of information on their website for pricing everything on those lines. I do know the pricing on some of them for sure. The other ones is kind of been what I've been hearing and what I can't find online because everybody's got it on their website, which is just crazy to me that you got to put in your info to get a call and then they'll tell you the price and all this crap. So if you guys been trying to look for an ELD or maybe switching, yeah, this might be a lot of help because I'm sure you don't want to sit through 40 calls. I know you truckers are getting blown up all day every day with insurance, Factoring fuel cards, ELDs, dash cams. I mean, it's just crazy. So hopefully this can provide a little bit of direction of where to go again. I'm not gonna tell you guys all the features because I'm not gonna have 20 ELD companies blow up my company line. So doing five here, I'm gonna miss some. I'm going to talk about some ones you guys probably all know here, but I'm gonna do the five most popular that I'm running into. So I got Omni track as the first one here. Reason I did Omni Track is because from my understanding, from what I've been hearing, DID used to be super popular. They still are very popular, but I think they're falling behind the line a little bit. We had a fleet, we talked to, had. I don't know how many trucks he had, but nothing too crazy, but it was a fleet, so 10 plus trucks, I know that much for sure. Wanted to get dash cams because everybody's really starting to lead towards dash cams here. And they were going to make him update his upgrade his elds and all his trucks. Been with omni tracks for a long time. This guy's got 40, 50 years of business. Not saying he's been with diamond track that long, but now he needed to update his ELDs to get the dash cams. And so they said that customer service was not a lot of help. It was kind of a pain. And then when, yeah, he was Trying to do it. He's like, yeah, it was another, it was, it was a good chunk of money. It was like five, 800 bucks a truck. And just, I mean, I'd spent all the extra money just by dash cams. With dash Cams are 400, 500 bucks, you know, and then maybe a monthly subscription. I mean, shoot. It's just, it was just kind of crazy. So that's what I've heard there. I don't think they're, they're not going to have as much of the, the advancements and AI that all these guys are having now. Again, I know you guys don't like the dual facing dash cams. Keep an eye on drivers. Drivers hate that crap, right? But there are stuff with the elds along the lines where you can get driver scores, figure out who's jacking up your insurance, who's getting the most violations, who's. Who's hurting your company cost, and more that indirect cost than obviously just the upfront cost with the eld. So I would say they're falling a little bit behind. They definitely do have that stuff. But I would say I've been hearing people move away from Omnitrack, again, think they're a great company. They're very popular for a reason. But this is what I have heard from truckers. I have to ask truckers, their ELD provider all the time as an insurance agent, and so do all my agents, because insurance is really starting to connect the ELDs like crazy because one, some of them require it. Two, some are offering a freaking 30% discount if you connect your ELD. So if somebody's open for that. And again, the insurance companies aren't gonna jack up your rates throughout renewal or throughout the policy period or anything on those lines by any means. But I always ask it because they're fine with it, which a lot of them are, then great. I want to save them as much money as possible. It's a win win. So, yeah, I've seen Omnitruck quite a bit. I've heard a lot of people that I've talked to moving away from them. So we have that and then we have Verizon is who I'm going to get into next here. Verizon is going to be five plus trucks. They're not gonna let you do anything on those lines unless you get five plus trucks. I actually talked to another agent, used to be a salesman for Verizon. He says they're a very good eld, some of the best out there. They don't have an upfront cross upfront cost with their eld, which is kind of nice. Verizon is going to have a leasing term with your guys elds and again I can't get the exact pricing because I put my information in and they're going to call me with it. So from iPhone online you might be around 35, 50 bucks a month, which I would say is on par and actually not half bad. Verizon is a massive, massive company. So they're gonna have good tech. You're always gonna have no issues with the vehicle tracking. It is not gonna be breadcrumbs. It's going to be the live reporting of the truck. So that's good to know. And they've got all that AI software on there where it's weekly driver scores. Hey, here's where your driver's at, here's this stuff, here's his hard breaking, blah blah blah, who's at risk of giving of getting into an accident. So obviously on the insurance side, on the liability keeping you guys in business, they've got some dang good safety features. So yeah, I like Verizon. Geotab is growing like crazy. Geotab does connect with dang near every single insurance company out there. So you guys are going to get those discounts. I know Verizon will too. Omni Track I think does as well. So there is geotab. They're yeah, like I said, grown like crazy. So they're really on the innovation they are getting after. They've got the safety scores with harsh events, speeding, distracted driving, all that crap. From what I was seeing, they are cheaper up front, probably about 40 bucks a month. And yeah, I mean obviously all these guys in this list are going to have all your basic features, your pre trip post inspections, your IFTA tracking. To my understanding, everybody on here does not have breadcrumbs for the tracking on the trucks. It's all going to be live tracking. And almost everybody on this list has got a full ecosystem too where if you guys are wanting to get dash cams, you guys are wanting to get air scales, reefer sensors, anything on those lines, it's got it all on there. Right? Again, OMN track I would say is the lesser of that stuff because you got to upgrade everything if they come out new product and it's just going to cost much extra money. Right. But geotab is growing. They are becoming very, very popular here. So there's my thoughts on them. I have got Samsara at number two and Samsara I see is a Lot on fleets. I see them a lot on fleets. Actually when I go to, when I go to the non fleet side I don't see them as much. And when I say when I see non fleet I'm talking single digit trucks, one to nine unit trucks. And really this is a universal thing I see on non fleet. The scale on non fleet with the elds that I see is like nothing compared to fleet. When I go to fleet I see the same 3, 4 providers 80 of the time. When I go to non fleet I dang near hear a new ELD provider every single week. It just blows my mind how many ELD providers are out there. So it gives you an idea that a lot of these guys do dominate the market because the guys who are fleets spending tons of money really taking this stuff into account, not saying the non fleet side guys aren't, but you got one truck, you don't really need to know what your score is. You're in the truck and you know exactly what you're doing. Right. But that's what I'm seeing there. So I just thought that was interesting. But Samsara is who, they're about tied with number one here on who I see on the fleet side. So they are huge there. I know the reefer sensors are awesome. Like if you're a reefer, Samsara might be the best one for you. I will say their tech is going to be more expensive up front than most other people's is or are. I mean they like their gateway product like the ELD and all that stuff on the truck is gonna be 1260 up front. I have no idea what the monthly subscription on it is. I almost guarantee there's gonna be a monthly subscription. I don't know anybody who doesn't. And if there is somebody who doesn't have a monthly subscription, please let me know down in the comments because they had truckers asking about ELDs all day, every day. And again I can't find all this information unless I'm really hearing from you guys. So. But since our is going to be a lot more upfront, I think a lot less on the subscription. Okay, but they are fantastic on the reefer side. They are super on top of it with the innovation, the tech, the AI, all that stuff. You can go in there, they take all that data from your ELD and you've got an AI assistant. You can ask a thing. Anything again obviously is the real time tracking. They've got safety scores with all the harsh events, all type of stuff. There's well Actually, I mean, I'm sorry, these guys are doing it better than everybody else. The event speeding, distracted driving was Samsara when I was talking about geotab. Now I'm sure geotab's got a lot of those features but Samsaro is really one of the best at it here. And so they've got everything on there. They've and some of these even top guys here. I'm sure a lot of ELD guys and I know a lot of ELD providers do have this but they've got the preventative maintenance and maintenance is one of the highest basic scores or just consistent basic scores I see along, along the industry. If you guys don't know basic scores go watch my other YouTube videos. I've got it on there with CSA scores. But everybody, you, everybody I really see has got problems with their maintenance. And so this stuff has been a lot of help to those people who are using Samsara. And so yeah again I mean the other thing to mention here too is I'm almost certain they're going to have a longer year or a longer lease term or, or contract than most other people. They've got three years now again most people, probably a lot of people do have that but a one year would be nice, you know but either way you got a three year contract with Samsara. Just kind of giving you guys an idea. Motive is who I'm saying is number one. They're the most popular. They're formerly keep trucking. They're super easy to set up. They are 150 bucks for the ELD or the Gateway, what they call it up front, 50 bucks a month. So they're going to be a lot cheaper up front. Maybe just like 10 bucks a month higher than industry average and maybe not even industry average but 10 bucks a month higher than what you would, what you can get a month for the subscription. But again like these guys dominate the space on everything. I mean they just have all the tech, they got the just whole ecosystem. You can get a freaking, you get a freaking fuel card from them. So their dash cams are the best. Their driver tracking system safety best out there. They've got everything you could possibly ask. I see motive more than anybody else. I see them the most popular fleets, fleets who have motive are usually having motive for a reason. And especially their dash cam is also killer. Now with insurance on all this too, motive has the most discounts on your insurance. Insurance is going to be one of the highest expenses in the trucking industry. Guys and companies like hdvi, Nirvana, Progressive, Great West Sentry, literally everybody, Berkshire Hathaway Homestay companies has these discounts for connecting your eld. Now again guys, people say, well I don't want big Brother, watch me right? There are going to be companies out there who are going to base your renewal based off your ELD data. Well actually a decent amount of them do base your renewal off your ELD data. But if you guys are going to be the best and you guys are taking safety seriously, you, you are going to save a lot of money on your renewal. Just for example, Progressive. Now not a lot of truckers like progressive, but they are the most popular. And so a lot of people on non fleet are going to have progressive. If you go have, for example Tteld with Progressive, you're going to get a 5% discount. That's it. If you guys have motive, you're going to get a 10% discount and up to 10% off at your renewal. So you could get a 20% discount in a year if you have the motive dash cam and connect them both. Now it's an extra 10% off and you get up to 30% off at renewal. I mean 30% off. If you guys are paying 100 grand for truck, for you guys trucking insurance, which is really not all uncommon, you could be doing that with seven trucks pretty easily. Seven, eight, nine trucks. 30% is going to save you 30 grand a year. I mean, shoot, you got a, you got to be married to the other ELD provider to not want to do something like that. So all these guys pretty much on this list are going to connect with a lot of people. Motive is going to connect with the most. Again, you guys can use hdvi, Nirvana, whatever and they're taking the trucking insurance industry by storm. One of the guys that we have that's very, very exclusive. I mean about 45 agents of the nation have them are also very good and they connect to the eldest and they don't even use your, don't even use your data for anything. They'll just give you a little bit of a discount and that's all they're going to do is just make sure the trucks that are driving are on the insurance policy. They don't care about the hard stops, the hard brakes, no nothing. They want claims go quicker and they just want to make sure that you guys trucks that you have are on the policy. So that's it. Bhhc, Berkshire Hathaway Homestay companies is going to give you a 5% discount on your ELD data and they're not going to do a thing with it. They just want to make sure their underwriting is better. So they're just going to see, for example, livestock haulers versus grain haulers, for example. They want to see how to rate each commodity. Just want to make sure they got the pricing accurately. They realize that they're charging too much on grain haulers. They're going to lower their price and ain't going to affect you whatsoever. They're just buying the data to better underwrite. You're just getting a 5% discount. So that's what I got to say about the ELDs. They can make a huge difference on your insurance costs. They can make a huge difference on how you guys look at safety. Pricing can be pretty, pretty different between them. So if you guys got any questions or anything, please reach out to me. I have a partnership of motive. I just want to throw this out there.
