Greg Buzek breaks down how AI adoption is transforming retail. Retailers classified as AI-mature generate 25.1% three-year shareholder returns and gross margins 20.7 percentage points higher than early adopters. The gap widens across customer-facing innovations like Amazon's AI triad and Kroger's Agentik assistant, plus back-office wins in supply chain and inventory.

Welcome to this week's Retail Reality Check, a review of the latest tech installs, brought to you by IHL Group. I'm absolutely thrilled to be guiding you through today's explainer, where we're cutting straight through the noise to look at exactly how the world's top brands are deploying technology right now. But before getting straight to the content, I want to invite you to join us for our next webinar, Beyond the Counter: How AI is Accelerating Self-Service. Thursday, June 18th at 11:00 AM Eastern Time. AI is reshaping the retail experience, and the kiosk market is at the forefront of that transformation. You will hear directly from industry end users as they share firsthand perspectives on how AI-powered kiosk solutions are delivering measurable value. Trust me, you won't wanna miss it. All right, let's dive right into section 1, AI maturity drives margins. We're gonna look at some exclusive new research from Accenture. To see how technology is completely redefining profitability today. As IHL's own Greg Buzek points out, the divide forming in the market right now is just staggering. Take Walmart, for example. Walmart is not picking a lane. Walmart is building a superhighway. This is painting a picture of a retailer reshaping the definition of convenience. The most AI-mature retailers who are driving this kind of change are seeing a 25.1% 3-year total shareholder return, Now compare that to just 3.8% for early-stage adopters. Guys, that's a massive 6.6 times difference! And it's not just about stock prices—we're talking about fundamental profitability here. AI-mature retailers are operating with gross margins 20.7 percentage points higher than their less mature peers. That's not just a small bump; it's a literal game-changer for competitive advantage. So the big question is, how do you actually get there? Well, AID measures maturity across 4 key pillars: AI literacy, advocacy, orientation, and implementation. It's really a structured journey from what the leaders know to what the organization actually builds out. But here's the sobering reality check for us all. Out of the top 100 US retailers, 73 are still in the early or developing stages. Only 4 have actually reached pioneer status. That competitive window? It's closing fast. Moving right along to section 2: reshaping the customer experience. Amazon is another perfect example of a retailer building out incredible convenience right now. They're deploying what's basically an AI triad. They're using Alexa's conversational prompts to let customers design print-on-demand merchandise. They've also integrated AI image generation directly into their app to narrow down visual searches. And behind the scenes, their new AWS Agentic Assistant is powering highly tailored experiences. Like Kate Spade's new AI gift concierge. But physical stores are evolving too. Have you guys seen these yet? Best Buy is rolling out 900-square-foot in-store spaces called Meta Labs across 50 locations. These are highly interactive zones designed specifically for hands-on discovery. You can try out Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, test VR headsets, and even use high-tech smart mirrors to virtually try on different frame styles and colors before you buy them. It's pretty cool. Meanwhile, over in the grocery sector, Cooklist's Agentik AI shopping assistant is now reaching an unbelievable 10 million digital shoppers across Kroger and Wegmans. What this tool does is effortlessly turn natural language requests and social media recipes right into checkout-ready shopping carts. It's significantly boosting basket sizes, but more importantly, it's giving grocers unprecedented visibility into true shopper intent way before they even hit the aisle. Let's look behind the scenes in Section 3: Operations and Supply Chain Tech. We're seeing major players like Clorox and Southern Glazers, alongside agile startups like SmartScan, finally and aggressively moving away from manual spreadsheets. They're utilizing predictive analytics to optimize logistics, mitigate risks, and proactively anticipate shifts in consumer demand. This is literally taking days of tedious, manual work completely out of the equation. And the financial commitments backing this up are massive. FreshDirect has secured a $100 million capital injection specifically to upgrade their tech and AI infrastructure. Taking a similar leap, Grocery Outlet is deploying Afresh's AI-powered store ordering across over 500 locations. They're using probabilistic decision-making to efficiently manage their highly dynamic and ever-changing store assortments. Alright, Section 4 is our retail tech lightning round. Buckle up because we are gonna rapidly rattle off some quick-hit updates from across the industry to make sure you're fully up to speed. Ready? Let's go! Kicking it off with robotics. Tesco is freeing up their staff by deploying ICE autonomous floor-cleaning cobots across 600 Express stores. Over in Switzerland, Denner is chasing that exact same efficiency, rolling out 200 Pudu cleaning robots to improve hygiene and operations. Hitting the road next, PepsiCo and Gadot are laying claim to the largest commercial driverless freight deployment in the US, scaling autonomous trucks across 3 entire states. Meanwhile, Tractor Supply is leveraging AI to drastically optimize their complex last-mile delivery routes. In AI Envision, China's Rainbow Department Store is testing Microsoft's xPilot to create a real-time digital twin that automatically triggers staff tasks. Broadly speaking, the silent revolution of computer vision is advancing so fast right now, filtering out visual noise to make shop and go completely seamless and highly accurate. For digital displays, Coop Norway is scaling a massive nationwide retail media network with Zeta Display. And over in Dublin, Popeyes just opened its first Republic of Ireland store with an absolutely showstopping digital entrance that brilliantly blends animation and real photography. Moving to loyalty news, Smoothie King's implementation of ParGames drove 2 million gamified plays. That boosted their loyalty signups by 40% and drove serious incremental revenue. On the grocery side, AWG partnered with RSA America to bring unified commerce intelligence to 3,500 independent grocers. For inventory visibility, VF Corp is rolling out Nadap's RFID inventory engine across 1,500 stores, starting with The North Face. Aiming for true end-to-end stock accuracy. W.S. Smith is also deploying Solemn Digital ShelfEdge labels to improve pricing accuracy in their super-high-footfall airport travel hubs. Looking at sustainability and replenishment, Sprouts Farmers Market is reclaiming countless store hours by unifying store and DC replenishment with Relex AI forecasting. Also utilizing Relex, Finland's largest bookstore has completely replaced their manual spreadsheets with real-time automated CO2 emissions tracking. In conversational commerce, Boohoo Group's HeySavvy platform just launched in the UK. They're using AI to turn photo and text searches into intent-driven shopping with a native PayPal checkout. Stateside, Macy's confirmed their Ask Macy's AI assistant is actively driving higher conversion rates, and they're already preparing to expand the platform to Bloomingdale's. Finally, in health and beauty, get this. 1-800-CONTACTS is partnering with Eyebot to deploy mall kiosks that give you a glasses prescription in just 15 minutes. And Uber Eats continues its big beauty expansion, officially adding The Body Shop in the UK and over 1,500 Ulta Beauty stores right here in the US. And that wraps up our lightning round, but before we go, I wanna leave you with a final, provocative thought. We've seen the data today. The gap between the AI pioneers and everyone else is widening rapidly, and that window to establish a meaningful competitive advantage is closing fast. So you have to ask yourself, does your organization have the strategy, the leadership, and the operating model to turn AI into faster execution and stronger margins today? The insights really don't stop here. I highly encourage you to explore the full narrative, including over 50 news stories and 40 case studies at www.ihlservices.com. Thank you so much for joining me for this explainer, and we will see you next time.
