Greg Buzek argues Walmart is building a retail superhighway by connecting logistics, health, fintech, and media. The company hit 1 million drone deliveries, 30-minute fulfillment in 33 markets, and launched a $4 billion fintech platform. Amazon, Sephora, and McDonald's are racing to deploy similar AI-powered ecosystems across discovery, payments, and operations.

Welcome to this week's Retail Reality Check, a review of the latest tech installs brought to you by IHL Group. I'm so thrilled you're joining me for this explainer today because we're going to take a super focused look at the technology that's literally reshaping how we shop, eat, and live. But hey, before getting straight to the content, make sure you visit IHL's website to see the hard data they provide on the retail and hospitality industries. Through their proprietary reach, they allow you to make smarter decisions. Trust me, if you're an executive in this space, these insights are absolutely essential. Okay, let's dive right in to Part 1: The Walmart Superhighway. We're anchoring today's explainer around a really fascinating theme recently highlighted by IHL's Greg Buzek. He hits the nail on the head with this one: Walmart is not picking a lane. Walmart is building a superhighway, right? This isn't just about them adding some new tech. It's about connecting massive infrastructure plays, from logistics to healthcare to financial services, into one cohesive, unstoppable ecosystem. Let's look at the hard numbers driving this. Just look at the sheer scale of this operation. 1 million! Walmart literally just hit their 1 millionth drone delivery. Powered by partners like Wing and Zipline, they aren't just testing the waters anymore, folks. Across 66 stores in 5 different metro markets, they're moving goods through the air, with a staggering average delivery time of just 23 minutes per drop. That is— wild! And speaking of speed, Walmart is taking on Amazon's ultra-fast logistics directly by expanding their 30-minute-or-less delivery service to 33 U.S. markets. By leveraging some seriously advanced algorithms and the proximity of their massive store footprint, Walmart+ members can get over 100,000 eligible items right when they need them. This is fundamentally shifting what consumers expect when it comes to immediate fulfillment. But remember, this superhighway goes way beyond just groceries. Look at this price point: $89. Through their Better Care Services expansion, Walmart is now offering seamlessly integrated $89 cash-pay Teladoc virtual care visits. So within minutes, shoppers can access 24/7 urgent care, dermatology, and even nutrition services. And the prescriptions? Sent right to the pharmacy without the customer ever having to leave the Walmart ecosystem. So you might be wondering, How is all of this facilitated and monetized? Well, enter OnePay, Walmart's $4 billion fintech app. It originally gained traction with Walmart customers and employees, but now? They're aggressively looking beyond that ecosystem. They're exploring payroll partnerships for direct deposits, rolling out a credit-building builder card, and get this— even exploring stablecoin payouts through blockchain for always-on settlements. Finally, Walmart is literally driving this superhighway right into your living room. Following their acquisition of Vizio, they are bringing Walmart Live, creator-led, shoppable content directly to Vizio smart TVs. Shows like Live in the Kitchen are moving from your mobile app right to the big screen, transforming passive entertainment into active, shoppable commerce. A real game-changer! Alright, let's shift gears. Part 2: Lightning Round on AI and Visual Discovery. The rest of the industry definitely isn't standing still while Walmart builds. Welcome to the lightning round. First up, Amazon is aggressively upgrading its visual search capabilities in its shopping app. They've introduced these real-time, AI-generated shop-by-style outfit collages and expanded their conversational generative AI shopping assistant. It makes product discovery a highly personalized, super visual experience. Meanwhile, Sephora is bringing prestige beauty directly into Google's AI ecosystem. They're actually the first beauty retailer to utilize Google Agentic Checkout, which lets shoppers discover products, build out their routines, and fully check out without ever having to leave Google Search. How convenient is that? Proving that visual search is absolutely the future, Pinterest just committed a massive $4 billion to Amazon Web Services. This huge infrastructure investment is going to power the next generation of visual AI, personalized discovery, and large vision language models for their 600 million users. And this brilliantly illustrates the convergence of social data and commerce. GoPuff is collaborating with SpaceX AI to launch Go. It's basically a TikTok-style, voice-activated smart shopping assistant that instantly generates hyper-personalized shoppable carts based on real-time cultural signals from the X platform. Pretty mind-blowing stuff! Moving right along, Part 3: Lightning Round on Retail Media and Payments. Let's look at how retailers are capturing our attention in-store. 7-Eleven reached a massive milestone ahead of schedule, scaling its Gulp Radio in-store audio network to over 12,000 locations. By using AI to optimize localized audio ads right between music tracks, they are driving a measurable 5-9% sales lift on impulse purchases. Over in the value sector, Dollar Tree went all in on DoorDash. They've brought on-demand delivery to their massive footprint, adding 9,000 US stores to the platform. This gives digital shoppers access to over 10,000 affordable products delivered right to their door. To build ultimate flexibility for the consumer, Ulta Beauty has partnered with Klarna for their American digital shoppers. Whether you're on their website or the app, customers now have the absolute freedom to split payments into 4 interest-free installments or access longer-term financing right at checkout. Next up, Part 4: Lightning Round on Hospitality and Food Tech. You know, AI is fundamentally rewiring how restaurants operate. McDonald's is officially rolling out their McDonald's Next strategy to boost visit frequency. A massive piece of this puzzle is Arcchio, a new Google-powered AI operating system designed to automate drive-thru voice orders and make kitchen operations significantly more efficient. In the travel space, IHG launched a dedicated ChatGPT app that leverages conversational AI for trip planning. Uniquely, the tool surfaces real-time pricing and routes users straight into IHG's own direct booking engine. This beautifully insulates their direct revenue and protects their margins from online travel agencies. And look at this incredible metric from the European apart hotel brand Bob W. By using a proprietary AI platform that handles 75% of customer service virtually, they've scaled to 57 live properties. Get this, they're operating with just 1/7th the on-site staffing levels of a traditional hotel. That is efficiency. And our final section, Part 5: Lightning Round on Ops and Supply Chain. Let's take a quick look backstage at the technologies making all of this happen. Target just opened a massive Houston receive center that was completely designed end-to-end using 3D VR simulation to optimize flow well before a single brick was laid. Home Depot is deepening its store relationships by testing KeyMe on-site car key duplication vans right in their parking lots to drive traffic. And CVS Health is successfully deploying open-source large language models to standardize complex prescription directions. Speeding up fulfillment and reducing the manual burden on pharmacists. It is just a blistering pace of innovation out there right now. We ask that you check out the full narrative, including many more news stories and over 40 distinct case studies, by visiting www.ihlservices.com.
