How to Replace a Person in a Photo: Canva Magic Grab & Photoshop

Brittany Long shows how to swap out a person in a photo using Canva's Magic Grab and Magic Eraser, then Photoshop's Select Subject and Remove tools. She walks through selecting the original subject, cleaning up what's left behind, and pasting a new person into the same spot.

Hey there. In this video, I'm going to show you how to take an AI image that you have, remove the subject, and add a different subject in. You might want to do this when you have two AI images and you really like the background of one, but the subject of the other. So let's go ahead and get started. So first I'm going to show you in Canva, then I will show you in Photoshop. So let's use one of these. All right, let's say we have this image right here and we want to remove this person and maybe add in this one instead. Or yeah, let's just say that one. Okay. So what I'm going to do first is I'm going to go over to the image, click on the image, click Edit, and then in Magic Studio, I'm going to go until I get to Magic Grab, and I'm going to select the parts that I want to remove. So I'm going to select the person. See, there's a little piece here. We can add the brush so that we can get that as well. But personally, I like to click it. So I'm going to click here. I'm going to also click the little guinea pig hamster dude. And let's see if we can grab anything else here. I don't think so. There we go. We got the flag. Let's see. I'm going to get a little greedy here and see if we can get that little teeny tiny piece too. Perfect. We'll see if we can get that black piece. All right, so I have selected everything I want to select. We got a few rogue pieces here. That's all right. I'm going to click Grab. And it grabbed it. You see, I can move it wherever I want to now. So if I wanted to move it back here, I could also do that. I'm going to delete it. And then now I'm going to go to this other one. Let's say we want this one instead, and I'm going to try to get that fairly similar. There we go. Okay. I'm going to do the same thing. Click on the image, click Edit, I'm going to click the yellow Magic Crab, and we're going to do the same thing as last time. We're going to grab the pieces we want. So we got our little hamster dude, little flag. Let's see if we can get the stick. I don't know if we'll be able to. Nope. Okay. That's all right. We got the hamster, we got the flag. We can maybe add the stick here later. Okay. And I see we got this. So I'm going to remove this background. There we go. I'm going to move it so that it looks like that's fairly similar with the shadow here. And then because the flag now is rogue, I can either remove it that way and I can also click Edit again and Magic Eraser. And so now I'm going to get a little bit closer by clicking down here and scrolling up and make this smaller. Remove that, that. There we go. Now I'm going to click Erase, and we should be able to get rid of that little stuff there. All right, there we go. So let's go ahead and take a look. So there's our new image. All right, now I can also do this in Photoshop. So here I have two tabs open. This is Photoshop Beta. One tab here, one tab here. What I'm going to do is actually really similar to what we did before. I'm going to select the subject. Now, you can see here that we can either select the subject down here like this, and I can automatically remove it, but I actually want the chair to be gone too. So I'm going to. You see how it says adjust? And then there's the plus sign. I'm going to highlight this as well. And I don't really need all of this highlighted. So now I'm going to click select less and remove what I don't need. There we go. Okay, now that I have that, I'm going to click Remove. And just like that, it removed that one. I'm now going to go to my other one, my other tab. I'm going to click Select Subject on the bottom, and in just a second, it's going to highlight the subject. And same thing here. You can see it took most of the chair, but there's a few little bits that I wanted it to get that it didn't get. So I'm just going to see if I can highlight that. Okay, I don't need that space, so that's good. Just making sure we got all the hair and stuff that I wanted. All right, so now what we're going to do is go over to Layer zero, click Copy Layer. And now I'm going to go to the other tab and I'm going to paste. Now, I can move by clicking up here size and position. I can move this how I want it to be. I can move over here. You'll see that this is a little bit fuzzy, so I would probably move it back like this. A little bit. Or I can just go back to this one and reselect, because I just missed some things. So I would come back over here and reselect that. And I can also go like this to select it too. Let's see if that was a little bit better. We're going to copy layer, go back to the original. I'm going to delete that one and then paste in the new one. Oh, that's much better. Okay, so now we have a new image, and we just deleted the old one and added a new one in.
