13 Sept 2022 · 13 min
Liz and Andresa Guidelli explain how to find a real estate mentor by first defining what you need using basic questions: what, where, when, how often, how much, and why. Match your mentor's market expertise and communication style to your goals, use resources like 56 meetup locations and a 12,000-member Facebook group, and remember that mentorship only works if you're self-motivated and willing to be held accountable.

All right, Liz, where to find a real estate mentor, right? Where can I go and shop for it? Do they sell it on Amazon or something? That's one very, very common question. And another day on our Facebook group community, one of the members posted over there, I am looking for a real estate mentor who can help me.
Yeah.
And I get it, right? People, it's very broad. It's very broad. And here's the thing. I'm going to bring to all of you guys one of my— if you guys don't know, I was a journalist in my past life. And by the way, we just got published on the New York Times.
Yes, we did.
If you have not seen the piece yet, you can go to therealestateinvestor.com/newyorktimes. NYT, and you can check it out. That, but that being said, in journalism, in order to make sure we are covering all the bases, we follow, we answer certain questions, right? It's usually what, where, when, how often, how much, why, all of that. So that's what I encourage you to do it. So when you are saying, right, you're looking for a mentor, what exactly you want to be mentored on? Right? There's different types of strategies. Not all mentors will be a match to you. So that's what you're trying to do. What you need and what they offer, it's a match. Not everybody's going to be a match for you. Where are you looking to invest? It might or it might not be important to you that your mentor understands the market that you want to invest. Let's say I want to invest overseas. Do you think it would be great if your mentor knows how to invest overseas? You're absolutely right. You're damn right. But if your mentor only invested in New Jersey, nothing wrong with Jersey people, love you guys. But if your mentor only invests in New Jersey, that's not going to be a good fit, right? When? When are you looking to get started? Are you like just getting started to get started? Are you looking to hire a mentor right now to get really the ball rolling? Or you're shopping around, gotta get clear on that. How often are you looking for somebody that can mentor you online? Or are you looking for somebody that can mentor you in person? No right or wrong, no right or wrong over here. Some people really like the physical touch and be with the person, right? Up to you. You pick the menu, you create what you want. How much are you looking to invest on it? Are you looking for a mentor that can mentor you for free or in exchange of whatever? Get clear on that. And why? Why real estate? Why are you picking real estate? Why the location? Why the exit strategy? Why at this time of your life? What is your why in terms of lifestyle and where you want to go? So, as you think through all of this, you must be very clear on those before you even start a conversation with a mentor, a possible, a potential mentor, because he or she will start asking you those questions. And the worst thing that you can do is to bore them, right? And I'm not saying that you must have all of that figured out right now in order to do that. What I'm saying is start thinking about it. And if you feel that you're facing a roadblock that you need support, we have 56 meetups locations, meetup locations across the country that you can tap into, over 12,000 people over our Facebook group for free that can tap into. So you don't need to figure it out by yourself, but it starts with you, starts with you creating this menu. And then when you feel that you're, you're facing a roadblock, you reach out to the community. Liz, I might say something right now that people might not like.
I cannot wait to hear what you're going to say.
But here's the thing. This is my truth. Okay. Ready? All right. True mentors will fire you even if you are paying them. And that's my opinion. It's not the mentor's responsibility to motivate you. Neither to hold you accountable. It's your job to do that. If I am not motivating myself and I'm not holding myself accountable, my mentors will fire me right away. And don't get me wrong, you will find gurus that will take your money and just play with you, and you're not going to see any growth. But when you're ready, when you're ready to hold yourself accountable and motivate your mentor to continue working with you, they're just going to pour into you because it's worth their time to put into you. And once you're ready for that, you're going to see exponential growth because you are motivated, self-motivated, you are accountable for yourself. So it's just a natural path of growth. But if you're not, honey, you're not prepared for a mentor. That's not even negotiable. If your mentor has to call you out to remind you of things, that's not it. You're not ready for it. So get crystal clear and get, get ready to do the work that is needed. And last thing that I would say here, you do not have to agree with everything that your mentor tells you to do. You need to trust your mentor and just follow what they're saying. If you don't trust your mentor to follow what they're saying, you shouldn't be hiring them. Plain and simple, because when you are in growth mode, you are not going to feel like doing it, or many times you're not going to agree to it because that's your blind spot. You haven't been there. They have been there. So you need to hire people that you really trust and respect that are where you want to be, that have been there so they can guide you and tell you. So if my mentor says, oh, two jumps to the side and then roll it. I'm just gonna do it because I trust who I'm working with. Because if that doesn't happen, it's just a transactional. And those are gurus and are people that are taking the money, but you're not seeing anything as a result. That's not— we're not in the business of that, right? So finding your real estate mentor starts within first.
Hmm, I like that. I see the comings of a cool checklist we can create for finding a mentor. I'm always thinking. How do we serve this community more? Because this is such a big topic, right, Andresa? I just, I'll also say too, you know, I think the other part of it is that you could have multiple mentors for different reasons, right? So if your biggest stumbling block is financing, you wanna find a mentor who's been able to successfully finance any, any real estate project. And then if it's short-term rentals, you wanna find someone who knows that niche. So you could piecemeal. That's what I think I love about our community, right? Attending the meetups, getting involved, getting in a group, getting engaged, you're gonna start to meet people who have different expertises than one person has it all. So, you know, I think for me, I have mentors that don't even know they're my mentor, right? In other words, a certain podcast, Brené Brown. I mean, she's like my emotional mentor. She doesn't know that. I don't need to have a contract with her, but I do listen to her. And, and if she says certain things, I think about it and I apply it to my life. So again, we can think about mentors very globally sometimes too. I'll just add that. And I think thinking about mentors and thinking about what their expertise is also helpful. It doesn't have to be all things. We're not all things to all people. You want to run a marathon, find someone who's run a marathon, you know, so.
Exactly. And, and then follow through, right? And it's just a matter of, as you grow, you're going to need different mentors though. So don't feel attached to them. It's natural that the relation, many relationships will no longer serve as you are growing or pivoting and going through different paths. The worst thing that you can do is to continue doing by yourselves. You're gonna pay for it. If you're gonna pay for your mistakes or for your mentorship, I'm gonna repeat it. Real estate investors, you guys are going to pay for it. You're going to either pay for your mentorship or you're going to pay for your mistakes. No right or wrong, just choose a path one way or another. And it does not need to be this tremendous, like, thousands and thousands of dollars. As Liz said, there's different types of mentorships, and as you grow, you will find different types of support, different creative ways to do it. The worst thing that you can do is to rely on your own resources and experience only in order to grow your business. Run for that and run for those that says that they know everything. Okay. They're experts in short-term rentals, syndications, and blah, blah, blah, one-stop shop. Like run for them.
Yeah. Run very quickly and do something as a result. Take action. Right. And we'd love to hear what action you're taking, what micro action with one step you're taking to move the needle.
Right.
