Gloria Chou explains how AI search tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity now drive product discovery instead of Instagram or Google. Media mentions are the only way to appear in AI answers, and Perplexity can find trending angles, journalists, and competitor data in seconds. A single feature can spike sales and lock in first-party customer data.

And so I'm really excited to talk to her today about all things AI, and welcome to the show, Gloria.
Yay. Thanks for having me back. It's, it's so crazy how quickly this landscape is shifting. The future of shopping is right here and now because raise your hand if you open ChatGPT today, right? So that's what's happening. I read somewhere that ChatGPT has processed over 500 million shopping inquiries every single day. So if your brand is not being found where people are searching for it, you are invisible to this generation of shoppers. And that's what we're going to talk about. So I'm so excited.
Yeah. So we, we had an episode back, I think it was in October that we aired the episode. So we had that episode and we can link that in the podcast. If you guys are like, what is, what are they even talking about? But this is a great check-in cuz we're about 7, 8 months later and there's really been this massive shift and Shopify is part of it and, and what they've created. But Google is dead. Followers, like social media, dead, right? Like there's like no way. It's like, it's so hard to grow on there. And so what's really happening is AI is answering customers' search. Right? Like they're, they're search, they're searching for things on the internet and AI is now the answer. So can you just catch us up to what's actually happening right now?
Yeah, you might have heard, you know, old SEO is dead. Well, I, I would say we're even, we're even past that because I would say traditional search and discovery is dead. And here's something I want, I want to leave you with. If you're multitasking, like remember this one thing, which is that people scroll to browse, but they ask AI to decide.
Hmm.
And this is what's happening. There has never been a platform in the history of commerce that converts better than AI searches. So if you think about if you're having a discussion with your sister or a friend, how do you put that discussion to rest? You ask ChatGPT or AI, right? You know that that is going to be the answer. Same thing with shopping. And I read somewhere that AI platforms like Perplexity, Gemini, when you're asking for how do I get a housewarming present, or I'm looking for a baby gift, that converts 4.5 times higher than any other organic platform, not even ads, organic platform. So again, the most powerful pathway to meeting people where they are, which is the moment of discovery and whipping out their credit card, is without a doubt showing up in those answers. And most people listening to this don't even know that— know it because they're still playing the game of how do I go viral. I, I also read somewhere that Etsy and Shopify are losing about 20 to 30% of their traffic to to AI answers. And so all the signs are pointing to this is where it's going. And I know AI is contentious, people are like, have different views about it, that's totally fine. But you absolutely cannot be a scalable growth-based business if you're just not being found. And they are not pulling from your Instagram lives, so they're not like liking people. AI doesn't like people, it simply looks for trust signals to decide whether or not to recommend that product in that point in time. And what is a trust signal? Trust signal is other people talking about you. It's you being on a podcast, you being on a gift guide, you being a listicle, you being a shopping roundup, you being in a best 15 skincare brands, something that the internet can latch onto. And that's what PR does. It feeds the LLMs, the large language models like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, information so that it gives you trust signals. I always say marketing is you talking about you, but PR is other people talking about you, and nothing is as trustworthy signal to AI than other people talking about you.
So what you're saying, which sounds really, really exciting, especially for small brands out there, is this idea that we're kind of leveling the playing field again. I, I feel like every so often, I mean, I've been a consultant and strategist in this industry since 2007, so I remember 2008 was the recession and really big businesses and companies were going out of business. And I remember thinking and telling my clients back then, look, like, there are retail spaces opening up that you could not have ever had access to on massive streets at way cheaper, you know, prices because the big guys can't turn the ship fast enough, but you can. So it felt like this kind of evening out of the playing field. And now with this idea of AI and not necessarily requiring followers like a social media team, ads, um, all the other things, that there's a way that smaller brands can be discoverable and, and We talked about this back then, like, act on this now, but again, continue to act on it now that they can be discovered right along the big guys with billion-dollar brands.
Yep. We had someone who got featured and 24 hours later her travel scars were showing up on the first answer on ChatGPT. It could happen if you're a coach as well. So it absolutely matters. And a lot of people are like, well, what about a blog? Or what about Reddit, and what about, and, and you know, there's different scores that will give, for example. So for example, Reddit is also like, like Quora, which is a consumer trust platform. So yes, Reddit threads is something that's feeding into the way that AI decides, but how many people can you get to actually refer you? If you sign up 50 people, they, the LLMs know that it's spam and that it's probably people just like having a recent Reddit profile, right? So they look into the recency of that. Now, blogs are not dead. Traditional SEO is still here. But it's just that the efficacy of that is so much less. So remember blogging in the 2000s? I have friends still writing the SEO of that and still getting sales, but now it's almost 30 years later, so it's a little bit too late. It's very saturated. So if you want to rely on blogging, I'm sorry to tell you that you're just not going to cut through the noise, right? Um, and so again, like you said, visibility used to be bought. It used to be the people who could spend the most or shout the loudest or, you know, has the most friends. Now it's earned. And exactly, it feels like the universe is giving us small businesses a chance because it's not about buying your way to the top of everything. I know that ChatGPT has said it will start to debut some ads, but it's still very, very early. And Claude by Anthropic has actually said they will never debut ads. So we know that trust signals and meritocracy are here to stay. And if we know that, then the game we should be playing isn't how do I go viral? How do I spend on ads is how do I feed this machine exactly what it needs so that I am showing up when the customer is ready to buy, when they're reaching out for their credit card at that point of discovery. That's what we wanna do. We wanna insert ourselves in those conversations. So the more times that you're mentioned, the more articles, the better. And I think it's hard because for a long time PR was very gatekept and it was very expensive. You think about it, it's for, you know, musicians or artists or politicians. It was basically inaccessible for small businesses. So it's not your fault that you're like, well, I didn't know this information because they don't really make it accessible. It's always like pay to play or, you know, pay us $10,000 a month for a retainer. Nobody has a budget for that. But what's beautiful now is that we're in this beautiful window of opportunity where a small business on Etsy, on Shopify, simple tools like Perplexity finds the angle for you and actually gives you a starting point of who to contact. And you can start writing that pitch using AI and sending it. And this is not an AI pitch, by the way, cuz a lot, I know a lot of publicists push back on me. Oh, she's telling people to do AI pitches. That is not what I'm doing. It is using these tools for a very specific way to find the relevant angle for your product. Because remember, it's all about relevance. You might have 60 SKUs, you might have one SKU, but what is that relevant product that's perfect for right now? Is it a spring summer flavor? Is it something cozy for winter? Is it a graduation gift? Is it a Father's Day gift? That's how I want you to be thinking about it. Not your benefits and features. But how is this going to be relevant for this season that we are in?
Hmm. So, you know, what are the first 2 to 3 PR moves that a brand owner, an entrepreneur should make to improve their discoverability?
And you know, PR gets complicated, but I am all about making it accessible and you can't make that accessible if it's not simplified. So PR is really simple. Just remember that it's writing a relevant pitch and sending it to the right person. That's it. Writing a relevant pitch and sending it. And here's where people get tripped up and they're like, oh, well, I don't have anything new. I don't have anything groundbreaking. I didn't say groundbreaking pitch. I said relevant pitch. You know, the brand Liquid Death, they're still literally bottling water. So if water can be reinvented and re— you know, it's not about like doing something new. It's just about packaging it in a way that positions it perfectly for this angle. So there is a tool called perplexity.ai, which has replaced my Google. It's different than ChatGPT because it's the best for finding your angle, your real-time trends and data. It's really the best for real-time information gathering. ChatGPT is more of like a synthesizer. It like, you give it all this stuff and it kind of puts it away like Marie Kondo, right? But it's not the best for researching the best insight or what does, you know, search volume on Etsy tell you. So if we want to lead with relevancy, we need to lead with the trend insight. The consumer sentiment, and there's no better tool on earth for that than Perplexity, and it's free. So Perplexity finds the angle, and then you can use a tool like ChatGPT to then finesse your pitch and then, and then send it out. Perplexity can also tell you what are the magazines, what are the buckets of gift guides that you can pitch your product to. So if you have something that's a $300 candle and Apartment Therapy has never featured anything over $100, you should know that, you know, so Again, it's just giving back our ability to do things that an agency normally would charge thousands of dollars for. And there's never been a better time to do it because we do have tools now.
Yeah, I mean, it's, it's, there's a lot of talk, like you said, about AI. And this is something in The Collective, which is, I was just telling you about like how beautiful and incredible like this new program is. Like, I, I like to say that it's, The Collective is the environment in which like as a collective we all rise, right? It's the environment in which it product-based business owner and founder gets to thrive in so that she can grow her company. And one thing that we're really starting to install too are more AI tools. Like, we just did a training yesterday on creating, creating their own bot, because what I think everyone gets to realize is that AI is here. We're already using it. Instagram— if you're anti-AI, Instagram is using it. Like, literally, you cannot log into the internet without it being used in this moment. So how do we continue? The cool thing over here, Gloria, that I'm excited about, and also for you, is AI's not gonna replace people making candles and jewelry and clothing and paintings and, and, and things like that, right? It's, it's gonna help us move faster. And so if you really start to think about AI as making each human being on your team, including yourself, more efficient, like we can just hold more and get more done, it's like, yes, I have a Bachelor's in Fine Arts, but graphic design is not the easiest, which is why Canva did well, right? And now it's like, okay, how do we take our ideas, like you said, synthesize them and operate faster so one human can do more? And the, the other cool thing— this goes back to this idea of keeping up with the big guys, like before it was budgets and who was the loudest— we get to quote unquote hire and have more support to grow the company by having access to these tools. And so I think as everyone's thinking about this, because bringing up Perplexity is like, I got to go log in, I haven't been on Perplexity forever. It's like, how can you, whether you're a solopreneur or you're a multi-seven-figure product-based business— like, I have a few clients that I'm coaching right now that are— one of them is like $5 million this year. And I'm like, okay, great, we're figuring out how you operate and how your team operates. And then now how do we assign the knowledge of AI to each team member so that they can operate faster, better, do things that they would've never even known how to do. And so I love that this is coming up in this PR perspective cuz it's really, I spent a lot of money on PR when I had, eventually when I had, you know, when I decided I was gonna do this during the time of celebrities, I spent a lot of money without a lot of results. And people who work with you in your program, I mean, you just texted me this morning, Kim, who's a shared client, she's one of my students, she's a student of yours. You just texted me that she got 13 gift guides into 13 gift guides, which is just like bonkers. Like the value, the ratio of the return on that investment is just like absolutely bonkers.
Yeah. Yeah. It's not that PR agencies are inherently bad or good, but what they are charging and the return, like you said, it's just not there. And with tools like Perplexity, it basically lifted the veil and made it accessible because let's be honest, the journalist doesn't really need a middleman when you're pitching products. They're writing for so many different outlets, they just wanna run with the story. And so the sooner we can just get ourselves into their inbox when they do a quick search and they're writing about socks or writing about pet products, the sooner they're gonna run with the story and then move on to another one. It really doesn't have to be that complicated. And so I think the beauty of some of this AI stuff is that it has made it absolutely accessible where it has cut out the traditional middleman who was keeping things so complex, like you said, so secretive where you're paying $20,000, but were you really getting that? No, 'cause you were giving away hundreds and hundreds of free product. And now the owner can say, I know exactly what editors are covering. I know exactly what Martha Stewart Living editorial calendar is, and I know how to position the product. So that's what's so beautiful about, about Perplexity. I really have 5 uses of Perplexity. The first one is what I just said, which is finding the angle. How do I tie whatever I'm doing to something that is whether, whether it's seasonal or holiday. That's really the first way. The second way is just coming up with a shortlist of journalists or, or media outlets that would cover it. Like I said, if BuzzFeed does or doesn't cover pet products and you make pet products, then you know whether or not to pitch BuzzFeed, for example. We had people getting into BuzzFeed. Um, obviously it's not a replacement for a database, and in our program we have an extensive database, but you can start to do your own research and it'll give you like 10 or 15 journalists. The third way that I use it is competitor analysis. So if you have a brand that's doing maybe $1 mil or $5 mil or a couple years ahead of you, you can say, hey, give me all of the stories that they've been featured in, give me all of the press mentions, and you can start to draft your angles according to what they have. One of my favorite angles honestly is like a Sephora dupe or an exp— or, you know, an expensive dupe of something. We have someone who makes candles instead of the Jo Malone expensive candles. She makes something that's just as great, but, but you know, 60% less. That's also a great angle. Perplexity can help you find that, right? It also helps you, the fourth way is helps you monitor news trends so that you understand if there's any controversies, if there's any FDA things. If you're in beauty, there's a lot of ingredient research all the time coming out. For example, I, you know, I work with someone who does an electric flosser brand. A lot of research about how flossing actually reduces your risk of stroke and dementia and Alzheimer's. So that's important for you to know because that strengthens not only your PR pitching, but your marketing as well, right? So like anything new on FDA or regulation or any research about a scent or an ingredient, that could be really good, right? So, so that's, that's really the way. And the fifth way is just really like to be your coach for all things media. So what you can actually do is say, here are all the angles that I found. Can you please give me like a comparison chart? Of most to least likely, and it helps you do that competitive analysis actually, cuz I'm like so ADD, I need it visually. So if I have 5 angles to pitch my pen or my Tumblr, which one is the best one for most to least likely to get featured? It'll actually tell you what it thinks because again, it scrapes the internet for what people have covered before and what magazines are most likely to cover. And so in and of itself, Perplexity is so powerful and every small businesses who understands this shift and wants to be seen. Needs to get Perplexity because that's how we use Perplexity to get featured media. And then AI pulls from those media features and that's how you get recommended when people are ready to buy.
Mm-hmm. I know you shared the thing where they got listed, they were like number one on the search. Do you have any other sort of wins or stories to share of any of your other students of how they used it?
Oh, so often. So a lot of times people think, well, you know, I really need to position this product cuz they're very married to your product, right?, but then they do a search on Perplexity and they found that according to, I don't know, Vogue Business or Etsy searches, this colorway was actually the most searched one. All of a sudden their marketing, their PR strategy's different because they found that people are looking for this colorway. So I think the more research, the more information we have, the better we can to make decisions. And the better you are at PR and understanding where the consumer sentiment is, what is your relevancy, it's going to help other areas of your marketing, like, period. And so people who emerge from this, who understand how to prompt it and understand that PR is not really a separate thing or a one day someday, it's something that really makes you a better, you know, analyst of your customer behavior. It makes you a better person to understand what is the relevancy, and it just literally improves all the other aspects of their business too.
This all sounds incredible. So what's a cool example of this happening for one of your students and really like getting discovered AI, and then what happened after?
Yeah, so the, the scarf company, Zess Organics, was actually featured on TV for a Today Show segment because I brought in someone. And right afterwards, when you do a search now for like travel scarves or travel scarf picks, ChatGPT shows them Surfacism as the first one. And the crazy thing was, was that even before the segment aired, they got so many orders, like even before, and it was their biggest sales day. The thing about social media and everything is that, and ads, is that the moment you stop pouring money into it, it stops. It comes to a screeching halt. PR is something that works for you while you're sleeping and it compounds. One PR feature then leads to the next and it builds this interconnected web of trust signals. Again, it's really like a, a compounding effect where everything else kind of just stops the moment, you know, for Instagram it's 24 hours, for ads it's the moment you stop spending on it.
Yeah. Amazing. It's interesting cuz what works. Then, you know, there's always the pendulum that swings. So when I was doing this and starting out, I mean, celebrities were the influencers. Like, it was what, you know, what, what is Paris Hilton wearing today? And then there was that. So celebrities were the influencers, and press was one of the discoverability tools because it was pre— it was pre-social media being a place where people went to discover products. And truthfully, I would say even shopping online in the way that we do it today. Then we took this huge swing into anyone being a creator, anyone being an influencer, um, shop this, this affiliate link, da da da. And I actually, it's so true what you're saying. I would say in the last year and a half, some of my clients that have had massive success have been featured online. They are featured on TV. Um, like I had 3 clients on Shark Tank in the past year and a half, and obviously we know what Shark Tank does. So I'm like, I like to say I'm like the, the brand maker behind a lot of Shark Tank-funded companies. But then I have one client of mine, I just caught up with her recently. Last year she was on The View and sold six figures of product. We had been working for the last, the year and a half before that where her main channel was Amazon, and then there started to be knockoffs on Amazon. So when she started working with me inside of a program very similar to The Collective, I was like, we get to build a brand. Like, your company can no longer be commodity on, on Amazon. It can no longer just be like this for the sake, but what rather we get to build a brand. And so we built, we redid her images, she had a website that could actually convert, she really built like the, the feeling and the essence of it. So cut to working her way out of like being solely reliant on Amazon to then now being a brand, people shopping from her. I think The View called her, they discovered her in some sort of way. And then literally she messaged me, she was like, we just sold 6 figures of product in 24 hours. She's like, the View wants to talk to the fulfillment team. And she's like, do I tell them it's me and my husband? And I was like, just, just take the call. And then past that, she had all these other ABC opportunities. And then I just heard from her and she has another really cool opportunity coming up right now because it's her season, because of what she sells and it coming in the summer. And so what's incredible is that there was at one point by herself, she could not move the product. She had a container of product ordered from overseas. Couldn't move it to save her life. And it took these step-by-steps of one, having a website that converts, building a brand, understanding the angle, right? Not trying to sell. We had— her product was very much like a summer product, and we got to think, how do we make this a yearly product? Or what angles, exactly what you're saying, can we take that people can buy this throughout the year? Then the press hit, and it just— I mean, she ordered more products, she has more design, she has a solid thing. So this is really why I think a lot of our clients work really well back and forth between your company and my company is that we're supporting them in both of these ways. It's like they can get the press, but if they don't have the place to convert that press, what's the point? So you're like, hey, here's how we get the visibility, here's the discovery, here's an alternative way of being found, which is very cool that it's coming back to TV and placement and listicles and all of that. And then over here we're like, great, now that How do we make sure it converts when you have the audience rain down on your company? And then I would say like the second part that we do is like we retain the customer. So how do we have that retention of customer? So you're building the web and visibility and we're building the, the conversion and retention.
Yeah, we go together like PB&J, honey.
I love it.
We sure do. Yeah. And I will say like, you don't wanna put your eggs into one basket because you don't own Amazon, you don't own Etsy, you don't own Instagram. You know, I'm sure people are nodding as they're listening to this because they know someone who has been hacked, banned, or restricted on any of those platforms. What happens then? I always say, if your Instagram goes away tomorrow, or if your Shopify or Amazon account goes away tomorrow, what will happen? PR is the insurance for that, right? Because you're bringing people back to your own website where you get to own that data. You get to have first-party data. And in this, to today's world, the ultimate, ultimate flex is you being able to own that, meet that email list, or you being able to engage with them directly. I know on Etsy you can't even have their email. You have to literally use Etsy as an intermediary and they take a cut. So again, the highest bar, the ultimate flex is getting found and then having a way for them to come directly to you where you own that. And that is just a beautiful place to be. And, and that's why I always say it's not enough anymore to be seen. You have to be chosen. You wanna be recommended. We know that being seen alone is no longer enough. It's so saturated. So people are like, okay, maybe I'll see you. Or if you're playing the game for attention, you might be waiting 3 years for them before they buy. But like I said, if people are looking for a Mother's Day gift, if they're looking for a pottery thing, right, for a homecoming gift, their buying intent is like 100 times higher. They are ready to whip out their credit card and buy that. And that's where you wanna be all day, every day. So why start there, like all the way behind the finish line when you can just meet them at the finish line, which is, I'm looking for a housewarming gift, check out what's your credit card. And that's the beauty of what PR allows you to do. It gets you right in front of them. At the moment when they're ready to buy.
Mhm. So let's just give away one simple prompt or something to get people started on Perplexity. Like, where, where would they get started? What would you say is like the first thing? Because I know that they can work with you and we can, and we can just talk about how they can work with you after. But what would be the first next step if they're like, okay, let me try this on my own?
Well, I actually give away all the prompts, you know, like especially in your, like in terms of how to find the angle. So if you listen to the episode we had in October, I give you step by step, so definitely listen to that one as well. But the first thing I would do is say, my company is called ABC, here's my website, www.that-whatever, right? Please scan my website for context and imagery and understand my products and tie it to recent trends, consumer insight, behavior, and data so that I can pitch my product to get featured in the media. Boom. That's it. There's no prompt engineering, there's no needing to learn this. It's just— and in one second, Perplexity scans your website, it ties your best product to what's trending now, and then it tells you the relevant hooks and angles and ways to position. The second prompt, because I'm going to, I'm going to go further, second prompt is, great, now you've given me 5 angles, please put it in a comparison chart of most to least likely to get featured with the corresponding data point, insight, or trend. Remember, we want to be pitching with the data or the trend, right? Not benefits and features. So I'll give you an example. We have someone who makes tote bags, very saturated. Everyone has a tote bag, but we found using Perplexity that the search result for catch-all tote bags, according to Vogue Business, went up like 46%. So we cited that Vogue Business article and said, according to Vogue Business, searches for all catch-all totes went up fourfold this year. Do you see how when you're writing that to an editor of a magazine, becomes much more compelling than saying, I think your readers should buy my tote bags. It's rooted in the here and now. Perplexity says, it's not me telling you this is important. It's what the consumers are already wanting, and I'm just simply filling that demand. I'm simply a solution to what they're already looking for. Another example is someone who makes mocktails. I know it's huge right now, non-alcoholic movement, right? So if you can cite that in your pitch, boom, right away you've captured the editor's attention. Because I think a lot of people are like, we're the best because X, Y, and Z, and here's my founding story. And 5 paragraphs later, the journalist is like, why are you writing this to me? So we want to capture their attention, boom, at the gate and start with a stat or an insight or a trend. Things like, as people are looking for, you know, non-flower gifts for Mother's Day, or as people are looking for like, you know, travel season, or as this movie is very popular. So that is the relevance. And so for years I taught this, I taught how to write a pitch, how to start with your relevancy. Now Perplexity finds that relevancy for you in a matter of seconds.
Yeah, amazing. And I'm really excited because you're coming in next week to talk. You're one of our guest experts for The Collective, and so you're coming in and we're gonna go deeper into this and really see how we can support people because, you know, we're definitely coming into the summer and there's a lot that we get to still sell and pitch and do in the moment. And then we're gearing up for how quickly the holiday season will approach and Whether it's long lead or short lead type media, right? Like something that they need in this moment or something that we wanna get featured in sort of the September issue or wherever it is. And so that's really, I think it's gonna be so awesome. So for our listeners, how can they connect with you, work with you? Like some people are like, oh my God, tell me more. How can they do that?
Yeah, I really don't like to gatekeep and you know, I have people DMing me from all over the world saying that they heard me on a podcast and they got featured, right? So like anyone should be able to use this. I have a free masterclass where I actually show you with a screen share how I prompt perplexity, and people's jaws are on the floor because they're like, how is this? How is nobody talking about this? And I'm really one of the only people talking about this because again, I don't do things the traditional way. I'm all about creating access. So you're not gonna hear this from a traditional PR gal. Again, I, I've never worked a day in my life in PR agency. So you can watch my free masterclass right now on demand. It's at GloriaChouPR.com/masterclass. That's Gloria Chou. Pr.com/masterclass, and you can DM me the word product boss on Instagram. So I'm on Instagram as well, @gloria_choupr. And if you DM me the word product boss, I'll give you an additional resource because I know that you're, you're probably, your wheels are spinning. You're like, why hasn't anyone told me this? Like, so you're gonna get so many ideas and I'm happy to help you to get even one step closer because it is absolutely transformative when people get featured, not just from the SEO and AI benefits, but how it changes their being, their energy, their confidence, and how that radiates. And I want that for everybody listening.
Oh my gosh, that is so incredibly generous of you. So thank you for that. And from our community, thank you so much. And not gatekeeping. And then also we have so many crossover students. So, you know, as, as they work with you and they work with me, like we just get to be the brand makers, the people behind the scenes that are helping. I mean, my impact on this world is that I want all of our, like, I wanna generate a billion dollars worldwide. Through female-run product-based business owners. And so like, that is what we're creating here at The Product Boss. And thank you for being a part of the ecosystem that we get to create that together.
