Knowing Your Purpose of Building a Recruitment Business

A May 2023 YouTube talk advising recruitment business owners to define a clear purpose (their "why") and align personal life goals with business goals. The speaker stresses speed and efficiency ("time kills deals") as operational priorities, uses personal examples (financial freedom, leveraging agency for property investment) to illustrate motivation, and highlights team alignment and profit-sharing as mechanisms for building legacy. Practical themes include daily habits, sacrifice, messaging/outreach speed, hiring to scale, and surrounding oneself with like-minded peers.
Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome back. So in today's video, I want to delve deep into the purpose and why we're actually building a recruitment business. So many of us often find ourselves, like, pondering the keys to true success in life and uncovering that one thing that aligns with our purpose, like our why. So one of the things that I learned from Simon Sinek in his book why, it's very important to have a purpose and vision and really aligning where the business wants to go. So let's jump right in and dive into this topic further. So first and foremost, let's address, like, the notion that success solely revolves around finding your purpose. While that isn't like, necessarily false, I prefer to say that the importance of focusing on outputs and efficiency, it's not just about, like, looking cute and it's about delivering results. In the world of recruitment business, this means not only attracting clients and candidates, but also providing exceptional services that really drive positive outcomes and you're always exceeding client and candidate expectations. So when it comes to running a recruitment business, speed and efficiency play a vital role. So we need to ask ourselves, like, how quickly can we achieve our objectives? So how efficiently can we get things done? So it's all about efficiency, really. It's about maximizing our productivity and accomplishing tasks promptly. So while maintaining a high level of quality, we want to be focusing on speed and results. You obviously hear me talk about speed. Time kills deals. The two things we need to focus on is going to be speed and results. So the faster you deliver candidates, the faster that you get clients on board, the faster that you're connecting in with candidates. Messaging reply and video outreach, all of these things. In terms of speed, the more you do that, the more it's going to lead to results so we can effectively meet the needs and expectations, working the job, filling the jobs, and getting clients on board. So in terms of the importance of why, so we're talking around why today. And when I first started my agency, like, my number one why was like, it was definitely financial freedom. Like, I just wanted financial freedom was my number one goal. So with financial freedom, I knew, like, once I got financial freedom, I could work when I want, where I want, so I could be anywhere in the world and with who I want, so I could pick the team that I wanted to work with. When it comes to the importance of why, all the talk about outputs and efficiency, it's crucial to address the most important aspect of the why. So understanding our exact purpose and the driving force behind our actions is what truly sets us apart. So I talk around it as the Polaris star. So you might have heard me talk around this before in Masterminds and the Polar stars. Really the end destination of where you want the business to go and long term, what value are adding to both the economy with the employees that you're going to be bringing on board and the future goals. This is going to be the driving force about like why you're going to do the actions. So it's a foundation upon which we like build our business. So without a clear sense of purpose, our efforts like are going to sometimes lack direction and true meaning. So our why gives us the motivation and passion to go above and beyond even when times get tough, when it gets tough, when comes to it, bringing on another client, when you've got a dropper, when a candidate doesn't accept a rule. These are the things that why we have to have our bigger meaning of why. So financial freedom. It might be to support your family. One of the biggest driving forces for me and a lot of other people inside the program is definitely going to be can we support our family? Do we want to retire? Our parents, make sure our kids are looking after and our partners. So like the balance of enjoyment and building. So for instance, like one thing that we need to get right is like there's certain activities that we might all like doing. So for instance, I used to enjoy drinking, going out, playing games and don't indulge in lots of chocolate. But I found like that merely engaging like in those type of activities all the time doesn't contribute to my overall happiness or personal growth. So building a successful recruitment business, it requires sacrifice. Just like when you want to diet, just like when you need to go to the gym. All of these things require sacrifice. And that's the same in business in terms of your why, because it means you're going to have to give up certain pleasures. And that's where the why really comes in. Because it's going to help us prioritize our long term goals over some moments of gratification. Now let's talk about like building aspirations. So some like argue that it's a mundane and unexciting endeavor that like we consider the bigger picture. But it becomes clear that all these seemingly challenging and demanding tasks are a greater part of purpose. All of those daily tasks and habits and everything that you've installed in your business day to day in your agency, they're all things working towards your why and your greater purpose. So sometimes we might think, well, a recruitment agency isn't really contributing to a big big purpose. Now that's okay. Like a lot of agencies and mine included was seen as you call it a cash flow business or a cash cow. The beauty about building a recruitment agency is it can give you the opportunity to invest potentially in property. I've leveraged my agency to, to buy properties that I rent out and they can give you slower reven reducing assets over time. Which is the beauty of like giving you passive income towards maybe your retirement. Or you might be using the recruitment agency to fund other business ventures. So there's a few people that have used this to invest in other companies, other startups. You might eventually want to go into a SaaS company for example and investor SaaS business. Like there's a lot of different ways of how you can see your purpose grow with your recruitment agency. But it all boils down to our why? Because we're driven by something greater than the momentary pleasure or temporary satisfaction. So our purpose gives us the motivation to engage in something that it may not always be fun holds like deeper significance. It's about aligning our actions with our long term vision. So you've got actions here and these are like the daily actions, the monthly actions, the yearly actions and they're all tied towards what your overall vision is for your life and your business. So to build a successful recruitment agency, it's really crucial to understand your goals. And so if your life goals don't really align closely with your your business, it's going to be unlikely that you're going to be able to fully immerse yourself and be as passionate about your business as you really aspire to be. So to achieve the best results for you and your business, it's important to tie your personal goals to your business goals. So by aligning your purpose, which is your purpose here to your business goals, that's going to give you a good tie and bond to really create a synergy that's going to fuel your drive and commitment. So the example say in basketball, let's like take a moment and reflect on like a basketball superstar. I've talked about it before in previous episodes. Michael Jordan. Now he wouldn't have accomplished everything he did if he didn't love basketball. It was, that was his why the driving force behind his dedication and perseverance. In the same way, your business should be more than just a necessity or obligation. It should serve a greater purpose in your life. So when you align your passion with, with your business, you unlock a level of commitment and determination that really like drives your business to achieving better results. So building a business aligned with your purpose not only allows you to serve others, but also creates opportunities for meaningful relationships. So I'm blessed to have a great team at Ronald James. Like in my agency I've got wonderful employees. Yes, I've hired and fired quite a lot to get there. I think 20, 25 and counting. But we're almost nearly a decade in that agency now. And the people that you work with will be the ones you spend the most time with and they become friends and even part of your extended family. So your product and vision should inspire you and excite you and also you're going to share that purpose with your team. So I talked like the profit share scheme that we develop that you should all make sure that you're doing for your team is making sure that you build in a profit share scheme. So you're aligning your vision and the goals with the rest of the team as well. So as you start to build on a team and your mini empire, you want to get them aligned with the profit share scheme. And that's the, that's a part of like building a legacy. So building a recruitment business driven by purpose really allows us to leave a lasting legacy. Because this lasting legacy, it's going to give you the cash flow in the business to also give you more status and more opportunity to go on to greater things. So it's about creating a positive impact that extends our own influence. When our purpose is deeply ingrained in our business, it becomes a driving force for long term success. So it ensures that even if we're no longer in the business, the impact of our work continues to help other people drive it through. So you've got your employees taking over the business or driving the business forward like it is in my case. And that contributes to the growth of the recruitment industry and your business. As you embark on your journey as a recruitment business owner, remember to always stay connected to your purpose and your why. Really important, embrace the power of like your work and let it guide your decisions and actions. So aligning your business goals with your personal aspirations and your purpose, make, make sure you surround yourself with like minded individuals who are also sharing a similar vision as you. I always say you are with average of the five people you hang around with the most. So make sure you're hanging around with other like minded business owners. That's the whole point of why we have this community in the group. Because you're going to be around people that have got similar visions and similar outcomes to you that'll help you not only achieve success, but also create a legacy that's going to impact your life, your family lives, and others. I'll see you in the next video.
