In this instructional video, J. Anthony Allen introduces a set of practice exams for ABRSM Music Theory Levels 3 and 4. He advises learners to first complete Levels 1 and 2, as those foundational exams contain concepts that recur in higher levels. Allen notes that while Levels 3 and 4 are still within the basic territory, they become increasingly complex, especially with added analysis sections that are presented in a multiple‑choice format mirroring the real exam. He highlights a significant difficulty jump between Level 4 and Level 5. The practice package includes four exams: two distinct versions for Level 3 and two for Level 4, compiled from extensive research to reflect the actual exam content. Allen encourages students to take these exams, use the results to gauge their understanding, and review relevant class material as needed.

Hey, everyone. Welcome to the ABR SM exam. Levels 3 and 4. So hopefully you already took the exams for level 1 and 2 and did at least good enough to pass. If you haven't, I would recommend doing those four first. Even if you think, you know, I'm a whiz at theory, I don't need to do level one. There might be a few things in there that surprise you, and these higher levels kind of start to build off some of those questions also. So if you're getting some things wrong in those first couple of levels, it'd be good to first review the class content associated with them and then press on to some of the later exams to see how you're doing. Level three and four, it gets a little harder. There seems to be a big jump between level four and five. That's when I really felt like, whoa, this is like, legitimately, like, getting hard, like, even for me. So 3 and 4 still kind of in that basic territory, but getting a little more complicated. We start having a couple more analysis sections, which I should point out, the analysis sections are really hard to do because the way I'm putting these together on this website, they have to be multiple choice. So I found ways to do it. I think that is close to the exam, the way the actual exam is. So. So I still think this prepares you really well for it. So please take the exam. Inside you're going to find four exams. There's two different versions of level three and two different versions of Level four that I've made based on exhaustive research of a lot of different things that I could find on what the exam is actually like and what's actually on the exam. So I did my best to put together something that is accurate to the way the exam actually works. So please dive in, take the exams and use them to know how you're doing, and then review some of the class content, if you like. Okay, off we go. Sam.
