In this introductory segment of J. Anthony Allen's "Ultimate Sound Design Recipe Book, Volume 4," the instructor outlines the class structure, dividing the content into four main categories: video‑game‑style sounds, horror‑film‑style sounds, risers, and strange/experimental effects. He emphasizes the collaborative nature of the class, noting contributions from world‑class guest sound designers and positioning himself as a guiding "Sherpa." After the overview, a hands‑on demonstration follows where a participant (Speaker B) builds a vocal transition effect in Ableton Live using simple elements—sawtooth waves, filtering, EQ, reverb, and delay—by resampling a vocal phrase from a track. The demo showcases the workflow: locating the MIDI clip, soloing the track, applying effects, and resampling the processed audio for further manipulation. The segment blends high‑level curriculum framing with a concrete, step‑by‑step sound‑design example.

Hey, everyone. Welcome to Ultimate Sound Design Recipe Book, Volume 4. In this version, this instance of the class, we're going to look at effects and oddities. Okay, so we're going to start with a category of stuff that I'm just calling video game sounds. These are things that for one reason or another, remind me of a sound that we would want to create related to or to be used in some kind of video game context. We're going to move on to things that I'm clumping together and calling horror film sounds. These are dissonant, gnarly sounds, but some of them, one in particular you're going to find you can make a surprisingly sweet groove out of. Then we're going to look at some risers. Risers are those big things that happen before the drop in a lot of tunes. There's a bunch of different ways to do it. We're going to look at three of them here. Then we're going to go into the last category in this class, which is just strange effects. These are things that some of our sound designer collaborators, collaborators in this class have sent that are just kind of bizarre effects. Some of them teeter on the element of mixing sounds. So there's some kind of mixing involved here. There's some reverb tricks, some imaging tricks. So I just kind of bundled that last group of things in together and just called it strange Effects. So we're gonna have a ton of guests in this class. We're gonna hear from world class sound designers from all over the place. They're all contributing these videos. You're also gonna hear from me being your little kind of Sherpa, guiding you through this class, just like the other recipe book classes. So a lot of fun. I'm really excited about some of these tricks that some of these folks contributed. And I know that I learned something from it. I mean, that's basically why I make these classes, so that I can ask my friends how to do that trick. So without further ado, let's dive in.
Yeah, so it's a pretty simple sound. It's just a couple saw waves filtering EQ and reverb and delay. We're going to design this little vocal transition sound here. So basically what I did to get this sound effect was I took this little vocal phrase here at the end of Fruit Punches Verse and I basically resampled it in Ableton. So basically to do that in Ableton, you hit the external end part over here.
The sound we're going to be working with is located on this track. And I can see the MIDI notes here that are triggering that track. If I look at the bottom of the screen, I can see the instrument and any effects I use for this particular sound. Let's solo the sound to hear it in more,
