A philosophy teacher I had wrote two words on the board one day without explanation: to pray, P-R-A-Y, and to prey, P-R-E-Y. I've carried that forward for decades because it appears in so many ways, including in spirituality. There's a version of spiritual seeking that is genuinely open. That goes looking without expecting or knowing what it will find. It surrenders to the process and doesn't need a particular answer or explanation. And then there's another version that looks identical from the outside, but a form of avoidance. The question kept carefully in motion so it never has to be answered, forever seeking the answer someone wants for themselves over the one that is inescapably true.
