A therapist reflects on what happens after a wound heals, when the real work begins. He describes a session that ended without physical healing, not as failure but as honesty. The value lies in the messy space after closure, where transformation actually happens.
The wound is the proof. What does he become when the wound closes? Who is he without the weight that also happened to be the thing that finally made him impossible to ignore? The answer wasn't what I expected. The session ended without a formal healing. That's not a failure. What happened instead was more interesting and in some ways more honest than a clean resolution would've been. There are sessions where a higher self says no to a physical healing, and I'll negotiate to find out what the client needs to change first, what the condition is, what's possible if they meet halfway. That territory exists and I work in it. This wasn't that territory.
