Next.js saw sign-ups for its paid platform rise as more developers adopted the free open-source version, a pattern from GitHub. The strategy works when you launch free tools to build community, then convert users who discover better performance in the paid version.

So if that number is going up and to the right of how many people are using Next.js, we see the same correlation for how many people are actually signing up on our paid platform. And it was a very similar model from when I worked at GitHub.
What I love about that is that even though your product was not free or was not open source, you created something in parallel that is free and open source and people can use. And then once people are using it, you're like, oh, but they work so much better in my platform. Yeah, and I think that that's a fantastic way to build your own community with something else. I want to say it works that way, but not the other way around, because like when you have a successful business, then you open source part of it. You already have the monetization framework that works great because then you're creating growth.
