A LinkedIn sales leader was asked to build the company's first SDR/BDR team instead of following the traditional AE path he expected. He was reluctant at first, but the unexpected detour became transformative and changed how he thought about leadership and sales development.

So LinkedIn was a very different company at that period of time. And I'd always imagined getting into sales leadership, and I thought that that would come in the form of running like a SMB or mid-market AE, and I'd sort of work up from there. And I was approached by the gentleman Brian Frank, who ran the sales operations team at LinkedIn. And he came and tapped me and said, "Hey, would you be interested in building out our first SDR/BDR organization?" And my first reaction was like, no. 'Cause I imagined jumping into leadership in sort of a full cycle capacity, and I had just always understood that to be my path. And I ended up eventually saying yes, and it was an incredible experience.
