Trend Number 8 - Employee Onboarding

Jason S. Bradshaw covers employee onboarding, arguing it should start when the offer is accepted, not the first day. Companies spend 15-30% of an employee's wage on recruitment, and the first 90 days determine whether their minds and hearts align with the organization.

Bradshaw and it's so great that you're taking the time to watch live or to catch up on the replay as I take you through the 15 trends that you can find in my annual report. This year's the 2024 Trends for Breakthrough Success Powered by customer and employee experience. You'll see a common theme. In each of the trends there is a direct correlation to the customer and the employee experience. In most cases both. And that's a really simple reason. It's those two ingredients that ultimately will impact your business the most. Now you can get a free copy of the report at Jason S. Bradshaw Trends and once you sign up for the newsletter, you'll get a copy emailed to you of the report. Now, there are 15 trends and my advice to you is to understand each 15. Identify the ones that you have the biggest gap, the biggest opportunity in, and then focus on two to three. Now which two or three will be unique to your business and where you're at? Why two to three? Because it's better to nail them and consistently deliver on on two or three of them. Then do a little bit in each 15 and actually not achieve anything. So two to three areas is where I would recommend you to focus. Absolutely. Get consistent of doing business through the lens of those two or three and of course being known in your marketplace, standing out in your marketplace for delivering consistently and reliably. So That's Jason S. Bradshaw.com trends. Now today's trend is trend number eight, employee onboarding employee. It has always baffled me that Companies spend between 15 to 30% of an individual's wage or salary actually just on recruitment. But this is often considered a hidden cost or a cost that isn't necessarily understood. But this is a substantial cost. It doesn't matter what you're paying your employees, 15 to 30% is a significant amount of money to spend on something that you ultimately want to go right, because you're employing someone to do a great job, not to do an average job. So I believe that those businesses that will achieve breakthrough success, and I know this from research in 2024, will absolutely stand out. You see, the first 90 days of an employee's experience with your organization is crucial to gaining their commitment to connecting their mind and their heart to your organization to ensure that they are aligned with the mission, the purpose, if you will, of what your business is trying to achieve and to deliver to customers every day. Now, a lot of people do understand that 90 day period, but they don't focus on it. But this trend goes beyond that. You see, the employee onboarding starts, in my opinion, the moment you make the offer. What are you doing the moment you make the offer? To start warming your employee up to their new job, to their new colleagues, to be excited about what lays ahead and to be able to come in on day one, being confident and feeling as part of the team. To a certain extent, there's an organization, a large international travel organization, and the day that you accept their employment offer, you start getting sent on boarding activities. So all the normal things, you know, payroll details and administration work, but you also start getting online training, an introduction to the business, albeit pre recorded, of course, but from the founder and CEO, and then a series of activities, not too many, a couple every few days, that are designed to do a couple of things. First of all, they're designed to help the person be job ready on day one. Now, they're not proposing that on day one the person will be able to do the job, but the notion of getting them towards job ready so that they understand the basics is really important. Because if worst case comes scenario and they turn up on day one and you've got to throw them in the deep end for whatever reason, at least they've had some exposure to training beforehand. But first and foremost, it's about helping that employee feel confident that they're getting towards job ready. Another thing that they do is explain to the individual about what the company is trying to do, what their focus is on customers, and a bit of how they operate. Now, it's not the only time they talk about it, but the reason they do this before the employee turns up is because if any of this starts throwing up a red flag for the new employee, the time for them to exit is before they even start. But more importantly, it's to make sure that that employee is building confidence along their journey to day one. And then day one starts and over the next 90 days they have a rigorous program of training, of peering and mentoring, of collaboration to embed that new employee into the organization. That's just one example. The important thing in here, the important thing I want you to take away, is that if your business truly wants breakthrough success, if you're committed to achieving breakthrough success in 2024, think about the employee onboarding, be intentional about the employee onboarding and consider when you actually start that process and how that will impact connecting their mind and their heart to you and the organization.
