Podcast episode (hosted by Dr. Jeff Langmaid) discussing a Musculoskeletal Science and Practice study that examined proprioception and a distorted sense of effort in people with chronic low back pain. The study used a trunk-positioning apparatus (participants seated with pelvis stabilized and a cable attached to the trunk) to measure accuracy and drift when reproducing target trunk forces/positions; 28 volunteers aged 18–50 participated. Key findings: visual and auditory feedback improved performance; when vision was removed people with chronic low back pain matched force less accurately and commonly undershot targets, suggesting a distorted sense of effort and possible central processing deficits rather than solely local muscle receptor dysfunction. The host discusses clinical implications for chiropractic care: supervised rehab, use of feedback during exercises, multimodal care (manual therapies, adjustments, exercise) to improve somatosensory integration and reduce fear-avoidance.
