Happy {Half} Hour! Are you making these 3 common weight loss mistakes?

In this live “Happy Half Hour” session, life‑coach Jennifer Dent‑Brown addresses women who struggle with weight loss. She frames the livestream as a Friday‑evening motivation boost, encouraging viewers to stay on track over the weekend. Jennifer outlines three frequent pitfalls: (1) overindulging on weekends due to a lack of a concrete eating plan; (2) overeating “healthy” foods and snacking between meals, which still adds excess calories; (3) fearing the scale and avoiding daily weigh‑ins, which deprives women of objective data for decision‑making. She offers practical fixes—plan meals for Saturday and Sunday, eliminate unnecessary snacking, and treat the scale as a neutral data point. As a bonus, she explains the deeper “dieter’s mindset” versus a “goal‑weight mindset,” urging women to think and decide as if they already weigh their target weight. Throughout, she engages the audience, answers live questions, promotes a non‑alcoholic Spindrift drink, and mentions a free set of healthier cocktail recipes. The session blends personal anecdotes, actionable tips, and community interaction to help women shift from short‑term dieting to sustainable lifestyle change.

Hey, hey, hey, it is Happy Half Hour. What's up, Luxe Ladies? I'm so excited. I'm just excited that I feel better. So last week Happy Half Hour was canceled because I was feeling like crap, but I'm back. Still got a little residual, you know, stuff coming up. Got my tissues handy, but I'm also ready for happy hour. So Let me grab my "It's 5 o'clock somewhere" glass. And again, today we're drinking Spindrift orange mango flavor. For those of you who do like to— hey, Naisha! For those of you who do like to enjoy your libations on the weekends, you can add an ounce of your favorite liqueur, vodka, They have all those wonderful flavored vodkas now, or tequila, or whatever, to here if you want to. 1 ounce, no carbohydrates. There you go. But I'm drinking mine free and pure. So Spindrift today. So today, Happy Half Hour, hey, we're talking about 3 common mistakes that women make when trying to lose weight. And today's actually the first time that I'm also live streaming on IGTV. So hey y'all, I see Roz has joined, AKB Calisthenics, wassup? Happy to have you. This is like my first time going live on IGTV. You guys can catch my other Happy Half Hours on my Facebook business page at Coach Jennifer Dent-Brown. But cheers, here's to the weekend. Okay, the reason why I do Happy Half Hour is because y'all need some motivation when you go into the weekend to stick to your eating protocol, that is your eating plan, right? So for years, Friday would be my time to be like, let loose, go to happy hour, have some drinks. And that would just snowball into overeating the entire weekend. And then Monday I'd be like, alright, back on track. And I would go back and eat, you know, very clean and then mess everything up again on the weekends. So lots of times you may see people coming on on Monday mornings giving you that Monday morning inspiration. Okay, of course somebody calls me in the middle of my first Instagram Live TV. Um, lost my train of thought. Okay. Yes. So you are all motivated on Monday to get back on track, um, for the weekend, and then you mess it all up during the week. I'm sorry, you mess it all up during the weekend. So my idea with Happy Half Hour is like, look, let me come on Fridays at 5 o'clock when y'all on the East Coast are finishing up work. You're thinking about relaxing, you have your plans for the weekend, and you're thinking about what you want to do. Let me give you some inspiration, some motivation to stay on track. Okay. Hey y'all on IGTV, so nice to see you. Um, questions, if you guys have questions, feel free to post them wherever you can and I will answer them as I will. If you're watching the replay, just go ahead and type replay on Facebook book and ask your question. I will go back and answer the question and tag you in it so you make sure you get the answer. All right. Happy half hour. Cheers. Let's go. I am Jennifer Dent-Brown. I am a life coach and I help women stop dieting forever. So my story is very, very briefly because some of you already know my story, but I struggled with my weight for decades, basically from college through adulthood. Losing weight, gaining weight, losing weight, gaining weight. And so I understand what can happen over the weekend if you are not prepared to stick to your eating protocol over the weekend, right? So for those of you who are dieting and still in that dieter's mindset, what you need to learn and what I teach my clients is how to change that mindset from having a dieter's mindset into having a lifestyle mindset. And thinking like the woman who weighs your goal weight. Okay? You're like, "What? What does that mean?" So, for instance, your current weight is, for example, 175 pounds. Your goal weight is 130 pounds. Right now, you think like a woman who weighs 175 pounds. You make all of your decisions based on a woman who weighs 175 pounds. Everything you do, you have that down pat, girl. You are like, yes, 175, I can do that with my eyes closed, hands tied behind my back. I know how to weigh 175 lbs. What I do as a Coach is help you start to begin to think like a woman who weighs your goal weight. So if you are, for example, if your goal weight is 130 lbs, well, you need to start making decisions and thinking like a woman who weighs 130 lbs. Pounds. So you can get there. We have got to shed that 175-pound brain that you have been using every day and begin to think like a 130-pound woman. Now, for most people, that is difficult because you have been thinking like your current weight for a long time. So you need that extra person, that, that third person, me, a Coach, to come in and help you identify areas where you can begin to change your thinking. And so this is one of the ways. Happy half hour. Today we're talking about 3 common mistakes that— hey y'all, see Heidi, love the— oh, love teeth 07, what's up? I'm not going to try to read Instagram handles, but today we're talking about 3 common mistakes that women make when they're trying to lose weight. I know this personally because I've made all of these mistakes. Constantly. So for those of you who are wondering what I am sipping on, it is Spindrift sparkling water. It is sweetened with just fruit juice, so it's really delicious as it doesn't have any additives, um, all that funky natural flavorings, no chemical stuff or anything in it. So it tastes really, really good. All right, so let's jump into it. I'm here to answer your questions too about anything that I have said today. The first mistake, and I touched on this a little bit, and I went into depth about this topic in my very first Happy Half Hour, um, it is being super strict during the week and completely overindulging on the weekends thinking, you know what, I'mma get back on track on Monday. That is the number one common mistake I think I see with my clients. And they don't always, they don't always tell me, they don't always say, oh, I messed up this weekend. But when we look at the scale, we can tell, okay, what'd you eat this weekend? Right? Let's have that discussion. So if you want to go in depth, I highly encourage you to go back and look at my very first Happy Half Hour, which I filmed, filmed like I'm a movie star. It was a freaking livestream. Facebook 2 weeks ago, and I talked about that for literally half an hour, why that happens and how you can change that habit. So overeating on the weekends is very, very easy, and the one way that you can avoid overindulging on the weekends is very simple. You need to have a plan. Yes, my friend, you need to go into the weekend with an eating plan. If you're very like, you know, strict and you know exactly what you're eating during the week and you have your little breakfast this lunch and dinner routine during the week, excellent. Carry that habit over into the weekend. So, you know, tonight you have an event you're going to. What are you going to be eating there? Are you eating before you go? What are you going to be drinking, right? What is your plan? Don't just go up in there and be like, hey, you know, pass me the fried shrimp, pass me the cheesesteak egg rolls, right? You need to have a plan because otherwise you're going to end up overeating because you're not paying attention to what you're doing. Saturday, what is your eating plan? What do you have planned? Are you out running errands? Are you going to stop someplace and get a salad while you're out running your errands? Are you going to do like I used to do back in the day, was hit up the Chick-fil-A drive-through on Saturday? What? So funny, I was talking to one of my clients who is working through her addiction to Cane's Fried Chicken. Now we don't have that here in Philly, but for those of you, I think in the South, y'all know about Cane's. I heard it's very good, but all they sell, like I looked on the menu, I was like, surely there's something healthy at Cane's that you can go and get an order. I looked online at the menu. It's literally all fried chicken, fried chicken strips and French fries. That's it. And soda. So that's why she loves Cane's. And I was like, all right, we gotta, you know, figure out some, some other way to get around the canes. But what is going to be your plan on Saturday if you're going to be out running around doing all these different things? It's good to have a plan for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Plan ahead. Sunday, what are you going to be doing? Same thing. What is your plan to be eating? Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Very, very simple. Again, I go in depth into the subject in my very first Happy Half Hour. Which was on April 5th, I believe. So go back and watch it. It's also on my YouTube channel. But that is a very common mistake that a lot of people make, and this is the reason why I started Happy Half Hour. Alright, mistake number 3. So actually I have 4 mistakes. Hey Ramir, nice to see you. Always nice to have the fellas join. Um, I actually have 4 things I want to talk about, so we'll see if I have enough time to go into all of them. But the second mistake that most women make when they are trying to lose weight is overeating healthy foods. Okay, so we get all wrapped up into thinking that, well, I'm eating kale chips, or I'm eating these cassava chips, or I'm eating sweet potato fries instead of white potato fries, as if that is healthier, right? Not understanding how different foods affect our bodies is a problem. So personal testimony here. I did this for years, right? Thought I was eating healthy. I had finished certification as a holistic health coach. I knew all the better foods to eat, but I was still overeating. I was still eating chocolate every night. Yes, it was 90% chocolate, 90% dark chocolate, But it was still milk chocolate and it was still extra calories. So one of the easiest ways that you can cut down on your overeating is to stop snacking in between meals. If you just eat, if you just, if you don't take anything away from this livestream today, if you just do this one tip, I guarantee you will lose weight. If you don't snack in between your meals and you just straight eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or eat when you're hungry, you will lose weight, guaranteed, right? So snacking just gives us a way to overconsume calories. Doesn't matter what we're eating. We could be eating apples in between our meals. It's still eating too many calories if our bodies don't need them, right? Our bodies naturally tell us how hungry we are. So if you are not in tune with your body's natural hunger signals, and you are paying attention to the clock and letting the clock tell you when it's time to snack or time to eat, like, ooh, 10 o'clock, time for my mid-morning snack. Ooh, 3 o'clock, time for my mid-morning snack. Ooh, 8 o'clock, it's time for my before I go to sleep snack, right? If you're allowing the clock to dictate when you eat, you're probably consuming too many calories and that just straight leads to being overweight. So second mistake that a lot of women make when they're trying to lose weight is overeating even healthy foods because like, oh, I'm eating all this fruit. Oh, I'm eating all of this healthy bar. Um, it says that it's got 12 grams of protein in it and 8 grams of fiber, so it must be really healthy. If you're not hungry and your body doesn't need the energy, need that energy to burn off, if you're not doing any excessive exercise or anything, chances are you don't need it. And when you don't need it, guess what? It just turns into fat stores, and that way you gain weight. So to mitigate this, you can easily stop snacking. Just try it for a week and see what happens. Stop snacking in between meals. So that is mistake number 2. All right, so mistake number 1. I see my clients are pinging me on Slack. Mistake number 1 is overindulging on the weekends. Mistake number 2 is overeating healthy foods. And mistake number 3— actually, I'm gonna, I'm gonna go with this one— is being afraid of the scale, being afraid of the number on the scale. The only way that you can determine What your weight is doing, whether you're gaining weight, losing weight, or maintaining weight, is guess what? You gotta get on the scale every day. You have to weigh yourself every day. So for those of you who are like, uh-uh, I ain't doing the scale. I go by how my clothes fit. That's exactly how I know if I'm gaining weight or losing weight. Guess what? You can gain a good 5 to 7 pounds before you realize that your pants are too tight for you. Literally. Why do you want to wait until you're 5, 7 pounds overweight? And Nyesha, I know it was you on Slack. Why do you want to wait till you're 5 or 7 pounds overweight to be like, oh, my jeans are tight, I need to do something, I need to get to the gym? No. If you just get on the scale every day, you have a very, very easy way to determine what kind of decisions you need to make with your food during the day. Now, here is the mind hack. Here's a trick to weighing yourself every day. So for those of you who do not like to weigh yourselves every day, this is what you need to think about the number on the scale. Guess what? It is just a number. That's it. A number. It's data. It means nothing. It is 100% neutral. It doesn't mean that you're good. It doesn't mean that you're bad. It doesn't mean a thing. Thing. It is a freaking number. It is as neutral as this tissue box right here. This tissue box doesn't mean a thing to me. Doesn't mean that I'm good, doesn't mean that I'm bad, nothing. The number on the scale is just a number. So when you can get yourself into that mindset before you step on the scale, it doesn't matter what the scale says. You look at the number and you say, oh, okay, I'm up a little bit today. I'm gonna drink some more water. Hmm, how about that? Or I'm not gonna go to happy hour tonight, or maybe I'll just drink some colorful sparkling water in a wine glass and pretend like I'm drinking a cocktail because my weight is up a little bit, right? It allows you to make decisions. So this is a decision of someone who weighs 130 pounds, right, at their goal weight. Someone who weighs 175 pounds doesn't get on the scale, or they get on the scale, they see the number is going up, and they're like, oh crap, my whole day is shot, right? I'm just feeling terrible. I can't believe I gained weight. I feel so awful. Pass me that donut, please. Yes, I'm going to have some chocolate cake. Like, oh my God, I can't believe I gained weight. I'm just going to ignore this thing until Monday, and I'm going to start over again. Or I'm gonna spend my weekend just like looking for a new diet to start on Monday. It's a waste of time, right? All you need to do is recognize the number on the scale is just data. And when you can look at that number neutrally, then you can, as a grown-ass woman, make the right decisions based on that number. Take all the emotions out of it, right? The scale doesn't mean anything to you. It's not negative, it's not positive, it's just a freaking number. All right. You see, I get hype about this because there's so many women that I talk to who don't know how much they weigh. I'm like, sis, if you don't know how much you weigh today, how do you know you're going to get to your goal weight? Right? You don't. It's like getting in the car, deciding you want to drive across the country from Philadelphia to Los Angeles, and then you get to Iowa and you're like, oh, I think I'm going to stop here. Am I in Los Angeles yet? You don't know because you're not. You don't know. You have no direction, right? You haven't— you're not able to get to your goal because you're not following the direction. You understand what I'm saying? All right, time for a Spindrift break. So that is mistake number 3, is not knowing how much you weigh and being afraid of the scale. So I do a lot of work with my clients who are afraid of the number. It's nothing but a change in perception. That's all it is. The number on the scale is not going to change until you change your mind, you change your brain. All right, so that's number 3. And this is the bonus one that I want to talk about, is the mistake that women have when they're trying to lose weight is that they have a dieter's mindset, right? And I know y'all know, If you are like a professional dieter, you have done 8 million diets trying to lose weight, you gain weight, you lose weight, you gain weight, you lose weight. You're used to thinking in points. You're used to like, you can look at a piece of chicken and be like, oh, it's the size of my palm. It must be 4 ounces. Yeah, girl, you need to go to like dieters rehab. We need to unravel all of that old dieters mindset because it's crazy. Crazy. It's crazy that you think like that. I was caught up in that whole Weight Watchers point system for a good little bit. Crazy. It's a waste of time and a waste of energy, right? And that is how, for example, 175-pound you thinks, right? We need to switch that brain to 130-pound thinking. 130-pound thinking, or whatever your goal weight is, You don't think in dieters' terms. You're like, oh, this is a good food, this is a bad food. Oh, I can't eat this. Oh, I'm going to eat this. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Right? When you get rid of the dieters' mindset, you can make a very conscious decision because one, you know what your current weight is because you weighed yourself this morning. Two, your emotions are right. Your brain is right. Your thinking is right because you're thinking like someone who thinks at your goal weight. And you can make a very cognizant, grown-ass decision about what you're going to eat and understand how it's going to affect your weight. So if you have a big event coming up, you don't have to go to that event and sit in the corner and be like, oh, I'm only eating celery sticks and carrot sticks because you're afraid to eat anything else because you don't want to lose any weight. That is a dieter's mindset. Right? Me as a life coach, I help women release themselves from the dieter's mindset, right? I teach you how to stop dieting forever. I want you to go to that event. I want you to pick up the lamb lollipop appetizer and enjoy it. I want you to go and have a cocktail and enjoy it and be able to like have freedom from food and not worry about the repercussions. Because you overate. No, you are able to make a very cognizant, grown-up decision based on all of the data that you are collecting about yourself, right? And this happens over time. This does not happen overnight. It happens over time. All right, so if you guys have any questions— oh, I can't believe I finished at 5:22. Usually I'm like, yeah, for half an hour. If you have any questions about anything that I mentioned today, So the 3 mistakes that I talked about are like no discipline on the weekends. How do you stop that? Overeating healthy foods, right? How do you stop that? Stop snacking. Being afraid of the scale. And then the bonus one that I gave you is getting rid of that dieter's mindset, right? Having a dieter's mindset and looking at food and being afraid of it. No, no, no, no, no, no. Okay. Any questions? I'm happy to answer. Looking on IGTV. Okay. Nothing on Facebook. No problem. No problem. No questions. If you're watching the replay and you're catching this later, and you have a question about anything that I've mentioned today or in any of my other happy half hours, go ahead and type it in. Tag me. I will answer it. Thank you, Nayesha. Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Send me a private message. Send me something on Messenger. Send me a DM. I'm more than happy to talk with you. And again, this is not alcohol for those of you who are wondering, although One day. Oh, you guys, I have— I'm going to put the link in the notes, but I do have a collection of 6 healthier cocktails that I have prepared for you all. So you can go grab that. I can't even think of the link right now, but you can grab it. It's completely free. It's 6 recipes of things that I love. If you don't like making your own cocktails, I give you 6 things that you— or think things to look for when you go out and order a cocktail, right? So you don't have to overindulge just by drinking. You can be smart about your alcohol when you go out to drink. All right, yay, happy half hour! So before I came on a happy half hour, I was listening to Beyoncé's Homecoming. I swear, that welcome gets me every time. Just the beginning of the album, in the beginning with like the band and the— I can't play it here because Facebook will take my video down. All right, y'all, cheers! Have a luxe weekend, and I will see you next Friday at 5 o'clock from a different location. I will be traveling next week, but I am dedicated and committed to coming on live at 5. See ya!
