Jerremy Newsome and Brittany Faith Turner start season two with an exercise: write your own eulogy to clarify what actually matters to you. They argue a clear purpose statement helps you stop second-guessing decisions and build wealth that serves something beyond yourself.
Chapters
Folks from around the entire world. She is Brittany Faith Turner.
And that is Jeremy Alexander Newsom.
We are so thrilled, honored and privileged to have you back. Joining us for season two of the episodes and the podcasts and the movement called From Broke to Woke. This has been a journey unlike any other in my life that has taken both myself and yourself places where I don't think we totally comprehended.
We had no idea this was gonna blow up the way it did.
We didn't know. We didn't know. I thought this was gonna be something that me and you got to know each other. And I learned a lot from you. That was kind of my goal. And then people really liked it. Brittany.
It was really precious.
It was.
It means so much. It's amazing.
I have cried on three separate occasions, but people told me how much your story and my story impacted them. We have people who've listened to every episode five times.
Crazy.
We've had people to come to me and to say, like, man, your story or her story, like, how did you guys overcome this? This is something that's actually changing people's lives. And I had no idea it was going to be so impactful. But I'm thrilled that it is.
Me too. It's just such a gift.
It is. And we're doing it again.
We're doing it again. And this season we are going to talk about how to live in whole life success. Which doesn't mean we just made it into the multi millions, which is amazing because it means you can do more. It means when you are successful in your finances, you're not just successful in your finances. Yes, you're successful out of the park, hitting the moon, loving, amazing, incredible, fulfilling relationships. You have optimal health. You have incredible achievements. All of the different pieces of your life are in alignment with the person you actually took the time to define.
Yep.
Story of your life that you actually took the time to get clear on. Most people never even make it to any piece of those pieces of success because they never defined what they even wanted that to look like. They're just like, oh, I want to be successful. What the freak does that mean?
Yeah.
So we're going to talk about that so that you can be successful in every area of your life. You can have it all. I promise you. It just takes clarity and action. That's it. And we're going to teach you how to do that because that's how we made it.
Yeah.
That's literally the background of how we made it. We just put certain pieces together and it worked. We're going to share that in this season.
Yeah, we're going to share the details, we're going to share more stories, we're going to share more paths, we're going to share some dreams, some visions and like you said, clarity. We're going to help you become more clear. So if you're listening to this or watching this, we're everywhere that you can consume podcast, podcast and or episodes audibly. So we're on Spotify, we're on Apple, itunes. We're also really, really big in Lithuania.
And we are on YouTube.
And we're on YouTube.
You can watch us on YouTube.
My goodness. If you enjoy this, please give us a five star rating. Allegedly that matters. So we can share to more people. So that more people can hear the journey and hear the story of how they and their family and their legacy can truly go from broke to woke.
Brittany Turner Hey. Oh my gosh. This is the whole universe has been listening to this and excited for this. This is season two of season two. The season two broke to woke, which would be the second is following the first one. This is happening finally right now. Oh my gosh. I'm thrilled this episode. Brittany Faith Turner we're talking about the vision how to live intentionally and why we should live intentionally and how we can create a compelling vision that pulls us. So rather than being pushed by our problems, we're pulled by our dreams. How did you do it?
Oh my gosh. I actually did something really weird.
Okay.
So I've always been a good person. I was raised right. I wanted to be a missionary Since I was 12 and I went to this ministry school that was teaching me how to be a really hardcore survivor so I could live in Africa and do all the things. But it was my first year out of the house and my parents had a really strict curfew.
That I was amped to finally not have. So I was just staying up all night. I wasn't doing anything bad. We were literally like playing guitar and just being up late. I would eat five bowls of ice cream a day and I was just goofing off and pulling pranks and still enjoying the school and still training all stuff. But I was just a fun person. I walk into class one day and the speaker said, alright guys, today we're gonna write your eulogy. And I was like, what is a eulogy? He said, it's really the story of your life. It's what they say about you when you die. But you're gonna get this really cool experience of writing your story now. When I wrote my story.
I had a minor meltdown. Again, good person. Da da da. Had a good heart. I want to help people. But I realized that even though I have all these ideas, I wasn't actually living any of those things. If I died today at that time, none of those things would be said, even though they're in my heart. I realized that I'm a really deep person, but I never showed anybody that I would be described as the fun goofball that made everything more fun. But it wasn't like nobody really knew the things that mattered to me in my heart. And so that was at 17, the thing that woke me up. And I challenge all of you to do this simulation because the people who live the most full and beautiful lives are those with terminal illness. Why?
Because they understand their time is limited, therefore, they're intentional. Sorry to break it to y', all, but we're humans, therefore our time is limited. And it's not dark or whatever to know that there's only one thing guaranteed in life, and that is that we're gonna die. So there's actually freedom in that. Freedom to freaking go for it, knowing eventually it will end.
Yeah.
So you're writing your book every day. You're writing your story every day. And you're not doing that for ego's sake. But you realize if I'm intentional, I can move things forward that I really care about. Your eulogy will make that clear for you. It's the fastest way on earth that I've ever discovered to knowing your purpose. And my favorite thing is it gets all the shit out of you.
All the.
All the shit out of you.
Oh, yeah. Okay.
All the things that people say you should do, you should learn five languages. You should be there, and you should be this kind of wife, and you should. Whatever the should is, you get to decide because it's your story and you're dead anyway, so it doesn't even matter.
Right?
I know it's not. It's a eulogy. Yeah.
Yeah. That's one of the things I. One of your quotes that you said a few times to me is, we're going to die anyway, so just do it. Which is wild, but it's very true.
I think I said that four times yesterday.
You did. We're going to die anyway. But the thing is, when you realize you're working from an end backwards, because most people go, okay, where am I now? And how do I achieve the things I want?
What's in front of me? What's an opportunity? What do I have that I can use, that's right here, right now, or that my family has, or that my community has.
Buddha was quoted to say, what you think becomes life. Right. And so if you are going all the way forward to really think of what you're going to be, what you want to be, and then work backwards on how you can fill that in, I think that's powerful.
It's powerful. But as powerful and profound as that is, it's one of the most simple and basic truths. If you want to drive from California to New York, could you do it?
Yeah.
Well, deciding that you're gonna end up in New York versus Mexico made you take different routes. Right. You can get the whole way there only seeing 10ft in front of you. Your headlights are 20ft in front of you. You can make the whole trip in the dark, only seeing that little bit ahead of you because you know where you're going.
Yeah.
And if a road's closed or a storm happens and you have to recalculate, doesn't matter.
What are some examples of what someone should include in their eulogy?
Great question. What I found is it's helpful to know who they said you were. Like what kind of character. Like what do they remember about you? What did you do with your time? Humans will always put you in a box, so tell them what box to put you in. Through habits, just doing the same things. Well, if I want to be known for this one, I have to actually do that all the time. So who were you as a person? What were your characteristics? Who did you love? What kind of parent were you? What kind of daughter were you? What kind of sister, friend, lover? Like who were you to these people and why did that matter? Actually I was working with a guy the other day and he said, I want to be known as a, a loyal husband. And I said, what does that look like? So it's important after you do write your eulogy that if you're gonna say something fancy, like, Brittany bridged the gap connecting opportunities from the rich to the poor. She created these hand up self sustainable programs. Sounds really fancy. I'm not a fancy talker. I speak to connect. I don't speak to sound smart. Like what did I mean when said Brittany built the bridge connecting the gap between the rich and the poor.
Yeah.
That means education. So when you say a statement like that loyal husband, what's the picture in your head?
A husband, specifically me holding wife and kids, just on a couch, just arms, just holding, being there.
How often do you do that? How can that make its way to your schedule? Or does it just mean that you didn't cheat on your wife? The most important thing is that I made it through my marriage. I didn't cheat on my wife. Is that it? Or is it that you took time every Sunday to. To have family movie day, and you guys had fun, you went on a walk, you had a picnic, then you ended with a Sunday movie and ice cream?
Yeah.
What was it?
Yeah.
And so by having this word described and having that picture in your head, it changes your schedule.
Shoot.
It guides your calendar. It guides your meetings. It guides your partnerships. It guides the kind of businesses that you engage in. And so, again, who are you at the end? How were you in your relationships? What did you spend most of your time doing? What did you care about? If making money is important to you, which it should be because it's a tool, what did your money do? It's not he had $700 million. It's he built wealth to empower blah. And even in his passing, this will live on. So if your net worth was important, what did it do? Again? Freaking matter. You're gonna die.
You're gonna die anyway.
Take it with you.
Let's do it.
So it might as well be viewed as the tool it is. So what did that do? What will you be remembered for? So there's fun things in there. And I do have a class on this now because so many people have asked me how to do it, and I just came up with some fun tickers that it's important to some people. They put their age. But be careful. You put your age, you're gonna hit it.
Yeah. That's a very, very true sign.
If you're saying 92 on your 92nd birthday, you're probably gonna go, it's so funny.
Toastmaghost how it works.
Yeah. But having a vision for your future. Oh, we're gonna get deep real quick. Uh. Oh. It's the fastest way to beat depression.
It's the fastest way to pull yourself back when you want to give up, because you have to say, what was the story of my life? Is it that I gave up because it got too hard? And that one lawsuit knocked me out of the game? And, you know, that was. That was her undoing, was that day. And then, you know, she didn't keep going, and she ended up living in the mountains, walking around, feeding pigeons or whatever happened to her. She rebounded 10 times better and bigger than before. It's like an auto reaction. You hit her, she comes back, and she's 10x. And then you put that in your subconscious and you're like, hey, that's my story. Not this wimpy loser that quits.
The fastest way to beat depression. Fastest, that's powerful.
How to wake yourself back up.
Because everyone faces that at some point. And for some people, it's a lot longer than others. It can be weeks, months, years. And it's all because of if you, you create definitions for yourself. You put yourself in a box and you said, and you labeled yourself and you said, this is who I am. This is why, this is what happened. But you don't have enough compelling future. That is powerful, that is deep.
The reason it beats depression is again, depression is getting lost in the past. Anxiety is getting lost in the future. And this is a guiding light for not getting lost. Which is really cool because this is it. Now I've made mine vague enough to be able to get to that. New York. Let's say you're going from California to New York. The result of my life. Even if some of the numbers change, you know, I only got to develop X amount of, you know, developing nations and wipe out poverty and rescue this many kids. I tell my family, if I die, just change the numbers because I'm already living that way. But you got to make it to where you can summarize it in one word. And I call it a purpose statement. Look at your eulogy, Read it. What's the common theme? What am I really freaking going for? So in the event I didn't personally get to rescue 500 kids myself this one year, the essence of everything I did is still serving. So I can say to you, the purpose of my life is to serve. So if I'm getting you a water, if I'm cleaning up disaster debris, if I'm sitting with you and I just like made you have a nicer day.
Sure.
Or if I'm rescuing kids, it's all.
In the spirit of service, I can fulfill that purpose.
Therefore I'm walking in my purpose every day. I have some, what I would call the Instagramable moments of your life where you get to walk in like the rescue of the child. Because that's what I really want to do. Yeah. But I can't do that 24, 7. So how can I live in my purpose 24, 7?
Bam.
Exactly. So how would you summarize your eulogy? I know you've done this recently and.
In fact, true or false, I think we're about to have a five day conference where we do it again.
Oh, yeah.
With a lot of other people.
Yeah. We're gonna do this every year.
Absolutely.
A dream summit.
Yep.
Get clear on your purpose. Integrate it into every part of your life so that you don't potentially build some monster business and want to kill yourself.
Yeah.
Isn't that dumb?
Yeah.
Nobody takes the time to even guys. This is why I named the company Ariel. It's to back out of yourself, look, and say, what do I really want to do? Versus, like, what's right in front of me flopping around like a dying fish.
Yeah. So when you said the purpose. The purpose to summarize a eulogy for me. The purpose of my life is to love. So yours is to serve, and my wife Svetlana's purpose is to heal.
That's right.
You heard that real quick. I don't know if you guys picked up on that, but this cat is married man now. So excited.
There's a lot that has changed.
It's the greatest thing to happen to.
Humanity season one to season two.
So many changes. This guy has a Moses beard. I feel like Moses is here in front of me.
My staff is in the other room, and I left it out there for now.
The Moses.
Yeah. A lot has changed, Brittany, and we're gonna have so much to talk about. It hasn't even been one year.
No.
Can you believe that we haven't even.
Known each other for a whole year.
Yeah. We're coming up on a yeariversary probably now. Ish. You know, is when I sent out the original message to you.
That's so crazy.
Isn't that crazy? The amount that we've already grown, not only together, but independently and business wise and mentally wise and relationship wise, even.
Financially, financially, like, we've done business stuff together. Yeah. So much fun.
We have money together. We have things that are growing. Big percentages.
Holla.
I'm very excited to talk so much about what we're gonna be going and how we're gonna be doing it, but to really wrap up with this discussion, this point, this episode, the purposes of your life is to serve, and the purpose of my life is to love. And having that blend and being.
Around people that we can both love and serve. I've seen it firsthand how you interact with people, and I see how you do serve, and it's amazing to me, that's your highest spirit. That's your highest self, as you'll always be in a spot where me and you both, I think, feel. We always constantly battle with feeling inadequate when we're there. We're in any moment, we're like, why am I here? And then it dawns on me that at least for me, you can tell me how you feel. But sometimes when I'm in a room, I'm surrounded by all these great men and all these great women. Why am I here? And then sometimes I go because I have the highest attribute of love of anyone in this room. If my purpose is to love, I'm gonna let that shine so that everyone can feel it and be excited and be enthralled and be happy.
That's so funny. That's your go to thought?
Yeah.
If I'm in a room full of people I think are greater than me or have accomplished more than me or is 10x wealthier than me, my first thought is, how can I learn everything they know so I can share it at all the other different levels, bridging the gap between poverty and wealth. Because I can actually go and be in both worlds really comfortably. Like, sleep in the dirt, about to go serve in Honduras, and swim through alligator infested waters to bring people food that don't have it. And I love that crap. And I can also sit with presidents of countries and wear the fancy dress to the gala, whatever you got to do, because it's all in alignment. And that's one of the best things I think this eulogy exercise does. It tells you the difference between an opportunity and a distraction. So once you've beaten basic survival, like, okay, I can pay for gas in my car, I can pay for the roof over my head, then everything that comes your way looks like an opportunity. But they're not evil or anything doesn't make sense for you, right? I've had so many people throw things my way, and we were just laughing about. I've had, I don't know, 40 requests of people wanting to do podcasts with me. I've been on other people's podcasts, but I never produced one myself or been like a partner in one. And when Jeremy came to me with this kooky idea of this podcast called Broke to Woke Up Brittany, bridge the gap between the rich and the poor. Yeah, how did I do that? Education. Yeah, how did I do that? I share a how you can do it yourself. Through our story last season, this season we're going to be talking about building wealth for. As a force for good, how to actually get clear enough on your purpose to never get knocked out of the game. And then you can build wealth, have resources to use all of them as tools to further the causes you want instead of being this angry hater activist, how can you actually change the system that you are fighting? By creating a better one that makes the old one obsolete.
Dang, I got goosebumps because our brainwave signal is on fire right now. Because that was gonna be my exit. I was gonna tell people. That's why we're doing this podcast, is because you want to bridge that gap. And this is how we're doing it. So if you wanna continue bridging the gap with us, if you wanna continue on this journey of whole life success, I'll see you in episode two.
If you like what you heard and you want more, come hang out with us. Our list of summits, all of our events are on broketowoke.com we look forward to meeting you in person.
