S2 E15 - Holy sounding excuses
4 Jun 2021 · 16 min
Britnie Turner and Jerremy Newsome break down the mistakes that keep people stuck: broken focus, skipping financial education, listening to the wrong people, and false humility that masks fear. They argue you have to ask for what you want, take responsibility instead of waiting for rescue, and read books more than once to actually learn.

In this next episode, Jeremy and I talk about the top mistakes that most people make that ruin everything. It's the sabotagers that we have seen time and time again that block people from everything they've ever wanted. Stay tuned.
We are talking about failures, losing. And in both of those, there are mistakes, mistakes that people fall into, mistakes that people make. And a mistake can lead to a loss or it can lead to failing. What are some mistakes that people fall into, Brit?
Oh, my gosh. In the pursuit of the greatest life you can possibly live, there's a lot of mistakes. And both you and I coach now. And so there's some common denominators that we've seen. I think the top one besides, well, my favorite quote from Billy Alsbrooks is broken focus is the number one cause of failure. So people start pursuing multiple things at one time instead of picking one lane, getting really great at that, and then letting that become like the base in which you build off of and having all. All these different branches, they just pursue all the branches at once, and then the storm comes and everything gets blown away. So broken focus, huge mistake. Next one would be lack of financial education. People know how to make money, and then they spend it instead of learning how your money can make you money, which is its own kind of weird thing, because they think, I have to make the money. But, you know, your money can make money. You put it in the right things. So I've got a whole list. What do you have? Maybe we go back and forth.
We can definitely go back and forth. I mean, you have basic, generic, simple mistakes like drinking and driving. I would love to be like, I've never done that, but I have. I did. I don't do it anymore. But ironically enough, it's one of those. Such a. It's such a basic mistake that can literally ruin your life. I did it for years.
Somebody else's life.
Yeah, no, absolutely. And a family's life like that. That one mistake can cause so many ripple effects that are all negative. There's not like a positive ripple to that other than like, hey, bro, I drove home drunk. Like, that's, you know, that's not even a positive ripple. So in essence, they can be the tiniest, tiniest things. I mean, Warren Buffett has said it, Eric Thomas has said it. Jim Rohn has said it. Tim Robbins said it. Earl Nightingale said it. Your whole life can be changed by one bad decision. So those mistakes are essential to avoid the tiny ones, the ones that are just a no brainer. So one of them can Be spending, not spending money on the right things.
That's a mistake. Right. Because you can avoid with a taxi forever, longest time or an Uber. Right. So bam. No longer drinking and driving.
Right. Exactly.
It's an easy one.
Yep. Next one would be listening to the wrong people.
Yeah.
We've talked about this a lot. Is whose voice are you giving authority in your life and. Or whose advice are you building off of? So again, it's insane to take any human's advice about your future.
Yeah.
Why does that make any sense? They can't tell crap. So that or listening, taking somebody's financial advice or warning, that isn't where you want to be financially. Taking somebody's diet advice that doesn't have the body that you want. So be very careful of those voices. That's the number one thing I see. Limit people. And it's normally somebody close to them.
Yeah.
Like a family member, a loved one, a spouse.
Yeah.
It's not the right voice.
Right. Another massive mistake is not asking for what you want. Ooh, a big one. That one plagued me for a while, for sure. You know, like go to. I'd go to a restaurant and I'd ask for something and then the thing would come and it wasn't the thing that I asked for. And I'm like, nah, I'll just have it anyway. But it's not what I wanted, you know? And there's some times where it's literally go with the flow because it's truly so simple, I don't have to worry about it. And again, is that a life altering thing, not getting the right food delivered? No. But if it's something that I really wanted, if I'm okay to get the new experience, cool. But if I truly want something, you have to ask. And I know it sounds menial and tiny and trivial, but if we talk about a bigger perspective. Right. Let's say that you want to truly live on an island by yourself, or you want to live on a cliff, on a beautiful home, mansion, thousands and thousands of square feet. Or if you want to have your own theater room in your house. Right. Or your own poker table or whatever. Start asking for that. Ask the world. Ask God. Ask your family. Ask your boss. Start asking for the things that you want in life so that you can receive them.
Mmm, that's so good. And then act on it.
Yeah.
I'm the kind of girl that turns the air conditioning up at the restaurant. If you don't like something, go change it.
Yep.
So a lot of people just expect someone else to do it. I think that's a huge mistake people make, expecting someone else to do it again. When Hurricane Irma hit the British Virgin Islands and I was friends with so many people down here, the closest people to me said, why do you think you can help? That's someone else's job. There's professionals for this.
I was one of the first responders. It was me and a search and rescue team. I was able to help so many people get so many people evacuated. Did I have a lot of experience? No. But did I have a dang good heart and a lot of action and focus? Yes. So expecting someone else to save you? Expecting someone else to bail you out? Expecting someone else to tell you what to do? Expecting someone to constantly encourage you? Expecting anything. Just take responsibility and ownership for your own life.
What an obvious mistake. But yeah. Hello. That's a big one.
Come on, ladies.
Can you talk to me a little bit more? Why is it, ladies? Is it a lady thing?
Come on, ladies. Yeah, it's, I think one of the. Probably sponsored by pain. But I never think anyone's gonna come rescue me. No one ever has. God let me kind of like never have someone come bail me out or save me. But the cool thing is instead of stepping back and going, oh, no, I can't do it, someone else. I immediately again, shift that energy to find a way. Now go find, figure it out. Because there's no waiting allowed. Go now. So it's kind of one of those things. It's a similar reaction to, I did some cage fighting and I was the only girl in class. And when you get punched in the face as a guy, you just immediately go, boom, boom. Like, if I punch you in the face, you'd punch me back. It's natural. If you punch a girl in the face, we go, oh, no, save me. And I don't know why. It's like this natural instinct. I'm not dissing us, ladies. I'm saying you have to proactively train yourself to respond the way that you want, especially in these situations. Life's different. There's not like these princes on horses coming to slay the dragon as often as they used to. And so how can we respond and take ownership of our life? We have different things, we have different rights. So that comes with not expecting a hero. Don't. You're not like, not attracting one, but you're just taking ownership of your own life anyway, going on a tangent.
Well, you are. But in case you all weren't listening, the multi millionaire woman who owns an island also has the words no fear tattooed on her inner lip.
That is true.
Is also a cage fighter. Ladies, what are you doing? Come on, let's go.
Learn to respond quickly. Learn to step up quickly. Learn to find ideas. Understanding that you are smart, you're qualified, and you are enough. And you're a child of God, therefore, bring it. He qualifies you whether or not you have an island.
Bring it.
Whether or not you have a million dollars. Tell them all whether or not you even have legs. Ladies, it doesn't matter. You can figure these things out. And it's crazy how, again, that survival, creativity finds a way when there's no one coming. And that's not a sad thing. You're enough. You can do this. There's a confidence. You can't take from me.
That confidence. We've seen it. We actually were talking about that yesterday when you were like, why do women preface every question with a bunch of excuses? You know, a bunch of, like, disclaimers.
Like, I don't know if anybody else wants to hear this. I don't know if anyone else cares.
This might offend you, but. Or maybe I'm not told. Maybe I'm not qualified to ask this question. I don't know if I'm gonna. You know.
Can't take a compliment. Come on.
Yeah. And when you do that, there's that confidence where you have to go, I am enough. Just like this. Just like the way I am now. I don't need to do anything to accept or receive or ask for or go after or go procure that thing, whatever that thing might be.
You are enough.
Today, therefore you don't have to do anything. But you are enough, therefore you can do everything.
Mmm. Get it? Another mistake that's nowhere near as profound as that one.
Is reading a book that you love only once. Because many people will watch the same movie more than one time, right? Full disclosure, I have watched Forrest Gump a few times.
How many times?
Honestly? I mean, three dozen, 36 times, maybe, you know, a lot. Yeah, for sure. So that is a fact. But in essence, I don't think I've read the same book 36 times. I've gotten close. There's a few books I've absolutely read a lot. And Four Hour Work Week, Tim Ferriss, that's one of them.
Think and Grow Rich for me.
Think and Grow. Yeah, I've read Think and Grow Rich Jensen. All of Jen Centero's books I've read at least three or four times. But you said Outweighing the Devil by Napoleon Hill. You've listened to 80 times something ridiculous. But that's a mistake that some people will fall into, is just not going back for that nugget. Not going back and listening. I mean, an episode, a recording, a podcast, something that you get moved by. Go back and spend some time on that.
Smart. Yeah, good one.
Because it's an easy mistake to just mull over like, oh, that's cool. I got that book. But the Bible, I don't know, maybe some people read that more than once. Who knows?
My next one would be Holy sounding excuses. Holy sounding excuses.
Can you give me an example?
I only need enough to provide for myself and my family. That's all I need. I don't need more than that.
That's a beautiful one. You're saying that's an excuse, though.
That is an excuse to do what? To stop you from trying, Overcoming, Continuing to pursue, Continuing to grow.
Yeah.
Learning, overcoming yourself. Overcoming your own little box of limitations.
I wasn't that until I met you.
There's a ton of them. There's a ton.
I wasn't that one till I met you, for sure. Really? Yeah. I was like, I have so much. I was like, I'm good. This is all I need. I can impact so many people. I can help so many people. I can help hundreds of people, thousands of people, maybe, maybe tens of thousands. But I couldn't do billions. I could do hundreds of millions for sure. And now having that ability, that knowledge, that confidence, having that circle and that network where you go, wait a minute, I can. Yeah, like, I do have enough. Right. That is an absolute understanding. Don't make that mistake of saying, I do have enough. But now I want to propel myself because it's not greed, it is literally amplification of if I am this loving and this incredible, I think I can impact and change the educational system of.
America on behalf of everyone. That's love, though.
That's love.
So it's an expression of love to reach your potential, to bridge that gap, to give your gift. And you're not doing it for you because you could have stopped how many years ago?
Yeah, I mean, a decade ago. And who. Who is love? You mentioned her just a moment ago.
God is love.
Hello?
God is love. So it is your gift to the world. Again, it's your responsibility. It is up to you, on behalf of those who do not have access to others, for you to help create a way. Again, I am not pro hand out. I am very pro hand up. Him, Jeremy Newsom. Creating educational systems that can empower people who have so little and turn it into so much and help them become positive forces for good and love and light to where the desperation of poverty and the horrible things that come from not having other opportunities. Do you think the ripple effect of Jeremy's life is going to change humanity? Of course it is. And it's important that he focuses on understanding the consequences of him not doing that and what happens.
Yeah. Thank you for that. But you're right. And that's those holy excuses that we can make because we want to settle. We want to be content. We want to have that contentment. But your plan's small. If you do that.
Another one is that false humility, not being able to receive compliments, not being able to stand in the light, not letting someone do a story on you, not putting what you're doing out there, not in a haughty or, you know, look at me way, but to say, hey, I'm an example of what's possible.
Yeah.
And I feel like we've done a really classy way as an organization of sharing exactly how your business can be a force for good and saying, like, look at this lady that we just gave all this money to. We're amazing. And, you know, everybody's like, give in secret. We've given in a. Hey, did you know as a development company or a construction company, you can use your talents and skills to build ramps for little old ladies and. Or fix up their homes so that they can stay in these communities?
Oh, yeah.
You know, they don't have to leave because their houses are dilapidating. The community needed more investment. You're already investing in the area. Why don't you invest in the people in the area as well as the houses?
Yeah.
So we were showing, and people are like, I just never thought of doing that.
Right.
You've said several things, and I've known you for almost a year now.
Yeah. Almost a whole year.
You changed my whole life. I love it. And there's so many profound things I've gotten from you. So sharing and not hiding your light is so important. That's a massive mistake people make.
That's it. That's the mistake, Ladies and gentlemen, do not make that mistake. We will expound on that in the next episode of Broke to woke.
