EP 546: Interview with Matt Boheen
30 Jan 2026 · 29 min
Matt Boheen founded Restoration Wellness in 2010 and built a metabolism-focused weight-loss program that helped clients lose 140,000 to 150,000 pounds combined. After adopting the Habit Based Lifestyle system, his revenue jumped $20,000 in the first month and $40,000 in ten weeks. He credits human coaching and community, not just the method, for keeping clients committed.

All right, all right, all right. Welcome to the habit based lifestyle Podcast. I'm your host, Jesse Yule. And today we got a very special guest, Mr. Matt Boheme. He is the owner of Restoration Wellness, a wellness clinic in Rochester, New York. Matt, I want to welcome you on the show today.
Thanks for having me. Pleasure to be here.
Hey, can you give, can you give the audience maybe like a 30 second, you know, intro on just who you are? What's your business about what you guys do?
Yeah, absolutely. So I started Restoration Wellness in 2010, opened up immediately after graduating from graduate school and we are all focused on, you know, primarily just helping people. We say, you know, get well and stay well. Our primary service at this point is our weight loss program, our custom fat loss program, and, you know, goal there is to just make sure that we can help people rebuild their metabolisms and make sure that they know how to keep their bodies in a healthy fat burning state from there.
Awesome, man. Yeah, you're doing great work and, you know, love to see what you guys do. So let's talk a little bit about, you know, what got you started in that industry and what you're doing and then kind of we'll transition into where you are today.
I, I always had this just natural mindset, I guess we'll say. And I've often attributed that to my grandmother. She just had kind of had just a very unique setup for, you know, the way that she lived. And I, I have so many vivid memories of, of being at her house when I was younger. And there were just so many things for me to interact with that I feel like set a framework that I didn't really appreciate until I got a little bit older and started to realize, like, wow, that wasn't actually very, like, I would say it was very normal in terms of like natural, but it wasn't very common. And I mean so, so for some practical examples, I mean, I remember processing honey. She was like a part time beekeeper. She had fruit trees all over the property. She had, you know, a couple of acres. It wasn't anything crazy, but it was kind of interesting to be in like a suburban type setting. She was like the only house in the area that happened to have a little bit more property. So there was a creek that I got to play in and she had a huge vegetable garden. And they're just all these things that are again, pretty basic in terms of they're out there, but it's not something that you get to interact with on an everyday basis as, as a little kid. And it just, it, it set a stage, it kind of set some guardrails that gave me a different feel, thought process. And my grandma just always, you know, it wasn't like run to the doctor when you were sick. It was what does your body need? It is, you know, it's not that you need medicine, you're deficient in medicine. It's what good things are you putting into your body, you know, you know, are vitamins, you know, helpful? And yeah, here's how to use them. Here's natural things that we can take advantage of. So when I started to think of a career, I often talk back about her because she definitely, you know, she had an impact and that I just knew that when it came to what I wanted to do with my life, I wanted to help people, you know, in a natural way and more importantly than just help them solve a problem. I really wanted to be able to, I would say, I don't know if I would have had these words at that point in time, but I wanted to be able to empower them. I wanted them to be able to learn and to actually be able to take ownership, not be, not be stuck and sick and, you know, dependent and wondering why.
You know, what I find fascinating, man, is, you know, I started my first gym training facility back in 07. So like you're literally in, in three years later you're starting a weight loss, you know, specific business which, you know, back then, man, like I remember starting my first gym, there may be in a five mile radius from where we were, there was maybe, you know, five to 10 other people doing that at the time. So I would imagine in 2010 you were one of the first to do what you're doing. Like how did you pick to do exactly that thing back then? And what were you guys doing that's different from what you're doing now?
That's a great question. I. I would love to say that it was like the master plan and I just rolled it out. But the reality is as. As bad as it kind of sounds to say, like they call it practice for a reason. I gotta say that that is the reality. When I first opened my doors, I mean, you know, I am fresh out of college. Like, literally, I graduated October 1, 2010, and I was in my office and whatever, two, three weeks. So it was terrifying moment, exciting, scary, all those things. So I was, I was kind of doing everything and anything I could with anybody that, you know, walks through my door. So we were doing, you know, detox protocols, selling supplements. You know, we had, we had chiropractic going. We were doing functional medicine. It was, but, you know, it all. That all sounds great. But I mean, the reality is, you know, how many people that I actually have in my office initially, it was not big numbers. But what I, What I experienced after the first, you know, couple of years of doing that is we actually ended up watching that. I would kind of say, like, fortunate accidents happened where we would be having people go through these protocols to address whatever was wrong in their body that we were testing for and measuring. And we ended up with multiple people that, that just like, lost all this healthy weight. Not just like lost weight, but they were improving their health. And weight was just almost like not, not effortlessly, but it was just coming off. And you sit there and it made me pause and it made them pause. So that created an opportunity for me to start building around that. And it took time. You know, it probably wasn't until 2014 that we actually had like a formal weight loss program or the first iteration of it. And, and, you know, like you said, alluded to that looked a lot different than what we're doing today. But that's because we've continued to, you know, make adjustments, make changes, watch results, get feedback from people just trying to continue to build, you know, the best process that we can with the mindset, again, of how can we make sure that we're educating the person on their body, not just how can we blast weight off as fast as possible. It's making sure that it's a change in their metabolism, making sure that we're helping them to learn, you know, what it takes to lose that weight, but again, you know, what does it look like to live in a fat burning state. So that's. That's where we are, and that's where we came from. Right.
So let's, let's talk about, like, today, man. You have, you know, you have red lights. You know, you got this, you know, weight loss program that's obviously evolved over the last man, 10, 13 years, right?
Yeah.
Like, what's different about what you guys are doing now versus, like, maybe what you were doing, you know, say, you know, back in 2014, 15.
I'd say we've just been, you know, fortunate to be able to learn so much from. I mean, we've, we've, we. We kept track for a while. We're. We're cumulatively somewhere around, like, £140,000 that our clients have lost to this point. So, you know, in, in upstate New York, you know, we're not some big giant. We're not the city. We're not, you know, we're not some big to do. So that's a cool number to talk about. Like, our clients have lost almost 150,000 pounds of fat over the last, let's say, 10 years. So we've been fortunate because we have been able to work with so many people to just learn quite a bit. I mean, we're, we're very focused on the support side of it. I would say that I have learned the most in that capacity because, you know, maybe this is not a surprise, but thinking about it from the, like, Dr. Perspective, you know, I'm always imagining if I talk to our clients and I say, you know, what made the difference? Right? Like, you've tried this and you've tried that, and you told me about all these things it, you know, all these frustrations and all these other programs and diets and exercise plans that you've tried before you came into our office. So why did this work for you where those all failed? And what do I expect to hear? Oh, your program's amazing. Your supplements are great. You know, the testing you do, like, whatever. They don't say that. What, what they say over and over again is it's the support. Having someone with me, having somebody who's actually there, you know, when I hit a wall, when the weight loss slows down, when I'm just struggling. Like people have over and over that's been the consistent answer, is the support has made the biggest difference. So I've learned that, you know, that's a piece that we need to continue to be excellent in the human component. Right. Maybe, again, maybe it's no surprise to maybe the average person listening to this, but I always thought it's going to be something really like really, like testing, very analytical, very, very much the method. But it's the human element that has made the biggest difference. So that's been a huge piece for me in learning that that's what people value the most. So we need to continue to be, to be excellent, you know, in that capacity over and above all these other things that, you know, to me are like the logistics. But I would have thought that's going to be where we have to excel. But no, it's about, you know, being with the person, you know, really being able to educate them, care for them, you know, so it's as much about who my coaches are as it is the information that they're actually setting up and imparting to somebody. So that's been a really neat lesson for me.
Yeah, that's powerful, man. I think, I think it kind of goes back to, you can give somebody the best diet, but if they're not following it, you know, it doesn't matter. So, like, having that coaching, having that accountability, having a community, having support, you know, those things have been around for decades. So adding that to the right diet, you know, the right nutrition. All right, so, Matt, let's talk a little bit about you coming on board with the Habit Based Lifestyle team. Like, what did you initially see from us that maybe was different from other programs out there?
What attracted me the most was the fact that instead of paid media, that the whole process behind Habit Based Life and the way that we reach to clients is, you know. Well, you described as a human funnel, right, which that in and of itself was like, kind of piqued my interest. But the more that you and I talked, and I understand a little bit differently, you know, how you guys approach it, it just made the most sense to me because it was about building, you know, building a connection with someone and making sure that, you know, we're actually talking to the right person as opposed to just, you know, throwing dollars out there and picking, you know, an age range and a gender and, you know, a few demographic points and saying, let me hope that as I throw this up against the wall that the right person is going to see it and, you know, maybe they trickle into, you know, our environment and, you know, hopefully we can give them enough value where this gave so much more opportunity for connection, for making sure that again, the right person, I'm talking to the right person. So it's like just more efficient is what it came down to. It seemed like it was efficient, sustainable, and knowing that, you know, you've got people who have stayed with you for a long time as well. That in and of itself, you know, speaks volumes to me. Like, that's, I guess to turn that around for a second. You know, whenever I'm talking to people that come into our office, one of the biggest things that they talk about is the fact that, well, they, they did a lot of diets, they did a lot of programs, they did a lot of things, but they were all very short term, very closed box. Right. Like it had a beginning and it had an end, and that doesn't work very well in that industry. And I would look at the same kind of thing, you know, on this coaching side is if you got people that stay with you, you've got people that, you know, that see that there's value in an ongoing way that says a lot passively. So.
No, that's good, man. So, you know, you, you come into the program, you obviously get started. I think the big thing is always like, hey, how fast am I gonna see a result? Right.
Yeah.
What were some of the things that you maybe noticed within the first 30 days from, you know, just a results perspective of what was the initial things that you saw begin to shift kind of right away for you?
That's a great question. So, I mean, bottom line, we were, you know, we've, we've spent a lot of money on Facebook, on social media marketing over the years. And I'll tell you that from a, like, again, from an efficiency perspective, the, the results here were just so much better. And I know it's a very general thing to say, but I mean, we're just able to have more meaningful conversations with the right people. So we're not wasting their time, we're not wasting our time, we're not wasting resources. We're just actually able to get the right people into the right conversations. So we're just getting where we need to go so much faster, you know, as opposed to all the time it takes to. Again, on the paid side, you put, you put media together, you put it out there, you build a campaign, you throw it all out. It just, it all feels like guesswork, where this doesn't seem that way. There's a system, there's a process, and that has allowed us to, like you said, even within the first 30 days, I mean, we were having people engage with us, people reach out. To me, just like taking advantage of, of this medium this way, you know, it's not that same interruptive style of advertising. So you're actually able to reach people where they are for the right reasons. I would say you're able to, you know, start a connection in a meaningful way and that, that just opens the door to something more significant. It just feels more congruent, if that makes any sense.
So, you know, 30 days into our program, you, you know, obviously you saw your engagement go up through social media. This wasn't something that you'd ever done before. And so I think a lot of times people think, well, I gotta be a professional at posting content. I gotta be, you know, good on video. But like, did. How did you find that, you know, implementation process? Did you find it simple? Like, what would you say to that person who's like, oh, I gotta be a professional at, you know, posting content?
Yeah, that's a great question. It's a, it's an easy reservation or hesitation to have and it's just a non issue inside of this system. I mean, the way that you've built it, the way that it's laid out, you really, you know, put everything right there. I mean, I still have to do the work and execute, but in terms of the guardrails, they're there. I mean, you don't have to. The bottom line is you don't have to be those things. You don't have to be naturally good, you know, speaking in front of a camera. You don't have to be super creative and come up with all this content. You know, you, you really are right there with, you know, you were right there with me. And you know, I see the same thing with the other people that are active in this community as well, is, you know, you're really making sure that we have the resources so we can, you know, get momentum built, get traction, you know, get results again very quickly within weeks. It doesn't take months, it doesn't take years. It doesn't take, you know, thousands of dollars of ad spend to just be like, is this gonna work? I mean, you can see tangible results literally within 30 days or less.
Yeah. That's awesome, man. So let me ask you this. Like, you started seeing results right away. You know, one of the things we didn't mention is you actually were like, hey, I want to use this for my wellness business, but I also want to start a consulting business. And you know, I'll let you speak a little bit about. You saw results obviously in the wellness business, but maybe an unexpected place was you actually attracted a, a client for your consulting business, even though, you know, you weren't even really trying to can. So can you talk a little bit about each of those? Maybe like just the Tangible result and then how, you know, you kind of got that unexpected result as well.
Yeah, well, I mean to be like extremely specific, I mean, within the first, Geez, I think it was within the first 30 days we had, we had bumped our revenue for that 30 day period by, I think it was 15 to 20 thousand dollars just through direct. You know, there's, there's always going to be indirect. Right. There's going to be, it's kind of like all ships rise with the tide effect, but.
Right.
Directly attributable to HBL and the posts that we were doing and the work that we were putting in, you know, I think it was $20,000 within the first 30 days. So that was huge. Right, Because I, I mean completely covered the entire cost of working with you within the first couple of weeks. So right there it's like pressure's off and we can just start building. And like you said, on the flip side of that, you know, part, part B of our discussion about why I wanted to get started with you was yeah, let's, let's get the brick and mortar going that much stronger. Let's reach more people in a more meaningful way. And then, hey, I'd really love the opportunity to consider helping other offices that want to be able to, you know, implement a weight loss program that can be staff run, that can help them produce guaranteed results without, you know, without exercise, without drugs, without, you know, hormone injection, just a natural, you know, nutritional based weight loss program. But that was supposed to be part B. But just because of the posts that we're putting out there and the content that we're providing for potential clients, a friend of mine that I graduated with all the way back in 2010 reached out and just said, hey, what is this that you're doing? Like we gotta talk. And so that was again kind of same thing like I mentioned earlier, kind of a fortunate accident. Like it's the plan, but it wasn't the plan yet. But you know, he and I were able to put something together and just get him jumped in. So he's, he's, you know, he and I are working together to build, build a process in for him right now that's going to, you know, help him and his office get where they need to go and where they want to be too.
That's awesome. So let's, you know, let's kind of fast forward a little bit. What is the, what is the coaching been like for you? You know, what is the kind of community aspect been like for you since you've been in the program.
I really appreciated it. I don't know where exactly I fall on the spectrum of, like, introvert, extrovert. I'm probably somewhere in the middle, but it is really neat. I mean, right from the beginning, you know, I actually asked you, hey, can I connect with a couple of people who are clients, you know, before. Before even, you know, officially starting. And. And that's. That was huge. You know, you were able to quickly, you know, get me a couple of guys who are at a similar place in terms of, you know, the office and, you know, where we were coming in, in terms of what we, you know, services we offer, revenue level, all of that. And so to be able to have those real conversations and just say, hey, you know, where. Where are you guys at? What has this been like for you? So the logistics were really great in that, but they were just great people, you know, super happy with the results and the support and the program that you've put together. So that was neat on the front end. But then after, you know, being in the program, you know, now that it's been, what, eight to 10 weeks that we've really been working this, I mean, you know, the results have just continued where I think we're. We're over 40,000 that we've collected directly related to HBL inside of this, you know, 10 weeks or so. And the community is. Is really cool. I mean, I've actually had a few, you know, continual conversations, been able to, you know, pop offline and make a phone call and talk to this guy who's adding this service or talk to the, you know, another office and say, hey, you know, how are you guys, you know, doing this or doing that? So there's. It's like such a neat. It feels like an. A bonus that we get that because it's not even, you know, we don't even need it, but it's just awesome to have it. It's a great community, all good people who are all looking to do the same thing, you know, just help people.
Yeah. And I think the. What I like most is our community's not all one specific niche. It's, you know, you have all kinds of different spectrums in the health and wellness space and a few other businesses. But the cool thing is, is everybody's in there kind of sharing, you know, what they're doing with each other. Man talk maybe for a second about an unexpected result that maybe you've gotten from the program that you weren't expecting. But, you know, it's. It's some. It's a tangible result.
I'd have to, I'd have to come back to you in that regard because, you know, there's just so much, when it comes down to it, I think as, as a business owner, I mean, like you said, there's always, there's always the components, there's always the day to day, there's always the systems and procedures and, and you know, again, I'll just say like the logistical side of it and those, all, all those things matter. But one of the unexpected things that I've sincerely appreciated is just you as a person and the way that you've been willing to, you know, to have, you know, conversations with me just about where I'm at as a person, you know, just talking about some of the challenges that I've been going through personally that spill over into my business and, you know, bottom line, just helping me to keep, to get. And I'll, I'll say hopefully to keep my head in the right place so I can be the best, you know, husband, father, business owner. But I, I would even say in that order, I mean, that kind of stuff, that that's how it has to be, right? We can't, you can't be a great business owner. And. Well, maybe that's not true, but for me at least, I can't be a great business owner.
I mean, if you're not taking care of your number one business at home, it's going to be tough to, to take care of your other business. So I always think, you know, your marriage, your family are your number one business. You know, your actual business or you make money is number two. Now you can switch those, but, you know, you're probably not going to be going home very much. Yeah, so what? I appreciate that, man. So let's, let's say this, guys. You know, I know a big thing for you was just being able to talk to someone else about the experience in the program. But like, what would you say to that person who's maybe on the fence? Like, hey, I don't know, you know, if this is the right thing for me or not. I don't know if this is going to work. Like, what would you say to that person who might be on the fence?
Yeah, I would say that the bottom line is the results are here. I mean, I was, I was tired of, of always looking for the next way to take advantage of social media. Because the bottom line is that is regardless of the industry you're in, right? That is a huge way to reach people. And so I was so tired of paid media advertising and I would say at this point I am very comfortably able to shut all of that down and just be focusing on our client reach via the HBL approach on Facebook. And that has, you know, that has beat out my paid media by a mile. So I would say if you're, if you're looking for solutions that are sustainable, that's what I was hoping for. And that has become the reality. And I'm only, you know, and we're just getting started.
Yeah, no, that's great, man. Well, hey, I, I really appreciate you being on today. I appreciate the work you're doing and you're putting in and also, you know, just you as a person as well. So I want to thank you for joining today. If somebody maybe was listening to this, maybe they're like, hey man, I want to install a, you know, wellness type business like you have into, you know, their business. Like, how could somebody get in contact with you?
Simplest thing would be to just find me over on Facebook and, you know, drop me a message. I mean, obviously at this point I'm super active over there. So that's the simplest way to find me. If you have a hard time finding me on Facebook just by my name, you can always just check with the business, which is Restoration Wellness.
Yeah, guys, if you need, well, if you want access to Matt, just check the show notes. There'll be a direct link to his Facebook. You could send him a dm, you could send him a message. But I will say this. Matt is Matt's very. How do we say this? Like he's, he's not really going to be the guy that's going to hugely promote his success. But I will tell you this, this is someone who's doing consistent, you know, six figures in his business. So, like, he's very humble about it. But I will, I'll brag on him a little bit. If you want to know how to build a legitimate wellness business into your business that maybe be existing or a new business, like, Matt is your guy, like, he knows exactly what he's doing and the one thing he didn't say is that he actually lives in another state and his team is running his business in New York. So like, to be able to do that and maintain it at that six figure level, that's huge. So I want to put that out there. If you guys want to know how to do this, like Matt is your guy to talk to, put our marketing in with it and it's game over. So, Matt, thank you so much for being on here today, man. I really appreciate it and looking forward to seeing where we go from here.
Yeah, my pleasure. And thank you for those kind words. It means a lot.
Yeah, you're welcome, man.
