He reports strong early business results (just under $23K collected in week one), rapid patient engagement and community-building, virtual delivery opportunities (weekly Zoom classes), and recommends the system to other chiropractors. Welcome back to the Habit Based Lifestyle Podcast. I'm your host, Jesse Yule. Today I'm with a very special guest, Ryan Calhoun, who's with Calhoun Health and Spine. He's located in South Carolina, Clemson, South Carolina, of all places. And Ryan, want to welcome you on the show today.
Thank you. Good to be here.
Hey, can you give us kind of a, just a little background on, you know, what got you started as a chiropractor and, and then kind of, you know, how long have you had the, the business you're in and just kind of like update everybody on where you're at today.
Sure. Long story short, I grew up in Indiana. I was a farm boy in a small town, love sports, had really supportive parents in all of my upbringing and sport life and career life and that my mom, my dad drove a truck for ups. My mom ended up getting sciatica when I was in third grade really bad and just kind of went through the regimen trying to treat herself and getting it better. You really never went to the doctor growing up when I was a kid, unless you're like dying or bleeding. And her leg just got so bad she thought she's gonna have to have her leg cut off because she had sciatica so bad and ended up having back surgery. And a year after that pain continued and my dad back in the day delivered X rays into this guy another town away, this chiropractor. And everybody knew about my mom so in the state that she was in and he ended up talking my dad and bring my mom in and Just changed my mom's life as far as like chiropractically getting her moving again. And then I had a cousin go into it as well. And I saw like in high school I was like, dang, this guy's really successful, great family, helping a lot of people. And that's how I became a chiropractor. So I've been a chiropractor here in South Carolina. Opened up my own practice almost 23 years ago.
Wow, okay, awesome, man. And, and what, what would you say is the biggest thing that's changed in chiropractic 23 years ago to today?
Oh man, that's a good question. When we moved here 23 years ago, I didn't know one person. So I graduated in December, opened up shop in February, not knowing one person. And, you know, so you kind of had the, still a little bit of a battlefield, if you will, a little bit of a turf war. So I kind of had to build those relationships. It was kind of like, oh, you're a chiropractor. And you know, he's kind of had that entourage around the community. You know, I look at it 23 years later, you know, see medical doctors, the surgeons, you know, people come in my office. So I feel like the, the field and the, the mantra has really changed. It's very well accepted and I don't know if that's a, like a nationwide thing, which I feel it is a little bit, maybe even post covet a little bit more. And yeah, so it's just really well accepted. I just feel like it's normal mainstream healthcare, you know, so I don't even think nothing about it. You know, that could be my mindset as well too. But yeah, so I see all sorts of healthcare professionals and integrate with other healthcare providers as well too. So I'd say that's the biggest change for me.
Yeah, that's all. So how many, you know, 23 years ago you opened a chiropractic clinic, like how many other chiropractors would you say were in your area in like a 10 mile radius compared to how many are in that same mile radius now?
Yeah, so Clemson, when I came here, you know, we have dabonomics now, so if you're not a football fan at all. So we won a couple national championships. So the town has literally just absolutely exploded in the last 10 years. But you know, like 23 years ago, super small town, it's still small now. So there's just two, three chiropractors and I'd say in a 15 mile radius you know, there's probably 10 docks, you know, so it's nothing really crazy specifically in Clemson, but yeah, in Seneca and a couple other surrounding areas, there's definitely a lot more docs, so.
Okay, awesome. I mean, I remember my first training facility I opened up, I think within a 5 mile radius back in like 07. I had 7 or 8 other trainers in the same area. And then when I sold in 2018, there was 58.
Whoa. Are you serious?
Yeah.
Wow.
In the. In the same. In the same 5 mile radius, so.
Wow.
Definitely expanded, but, you know, that's awesome, man. Well, I know. You know, the biggest thing for our listeners is like, you. You know, when we first chatted, you were kind of doing some t. You were doing trt, you were doing chiropractic. Was there any other services that you were offering besides those?
Yeah, we were doing like some red light. And I've always kind of dibbled and dabbled, you know, like, one of my core values in chiropractic is like, nutrition, exercise, you know, of course, chiropractic, working on correction, pain relief, wellness care. So I've always dibbled and dabbled into like, some nutrition and weight loss. Did the red light, so just kind of trying to find that niche into helping people on that avenue. So.
Okay, awesome.
Some of that. Yeah.
Yeah, man. And so, like, what would you say maybe the number one thing is that kind of attracted you to the VIP weight loss system?
Yeah. So just doing this, like 22, 23 years, as you would know, you and I, we probably had 10 messages back and forth. You're like, dude, this guy is hard to get a hold of and to just take a look at the system, you know, so just after doing it so long, you know, you hear different sales pitches and things like that. And so I've just gotten a little bit colder over the years of just jumping in on something. And I'd say that the number one thing once I got into it was like, just seeing the nutrition plan using whole foods, you know, working on detox and the liver, the colon, you know, you have to add exercise. So it just aligned with some of my core values of health. And I would say that's probably the biggest thing to that attracted me into, like, all right, let's. Let's get up to the plate and start swinging, you know, so.
Okay. And then as far as, like, I mean, obviously in the chiropractic space, there's other, you know, weight loss programs, there's other. There's other kind of like weight loss things like What? You know, maybe, like, what are one or two things that are different beyond just the. The nutrition, beyond the exercise inside of our program that, you know, maybe other chiropractic programs don't have out there?
Definitely the support, like, okay, you know, a lot of them, like, hey, here's a program. You know, good luck, you know, or here's a marketing. Go find a marketer. So same with my medical integration, you know, so I integrated my office two years ago. Still doing it. Take a little. There's different approaches to go about doing it. And I was in a space and a time in my life just with other business adventures. I do too. Like, I need something to take me from A to Z. Like, I don't want to reinvent the wheel. You know, been there, done that. And then I've also done the other side, where I just pay a few bucks. And I was just at a point in my career, like, all right, I want something that works really well, somebody to help me with marketing, because, you know, the best marketer wins at the end of the day a lot of times, so. And I needed a good product, and I needed a good system with good results. So that's what attracted me because it. It went from a toz, great community. Other docs seeing it, you know, through the Facebook groups, and we have meetings, we have zooms. It's not like, hey, here's this for X amount of money, and we'll see you later. You know, good luck.
Yeah, for sure. That's awesome, man. So let me ask you, you know, you. You invest in the program initially, and you. You know, you had to go through a certification process, but, like, for you, I know you kind of start. You're like, hey, I want to actually do this as the program because I want to see what my clients experience. Like, what was that kind of like, for you to not only have to, you know, you buy into the program, but, like, you got to get certified. You gotta kind of go through it of practicing what you preach, essentially. Like, what was that like for you and then also your team to be able to do that?
Yeah. So for me, I'm the type of doc, like, I'm not gonna ask you to do something if I'm not doing it or taking it or drinking it, whatever, you know, so. And my wife's the same way, you know, so she's. She's very philosophically, like, oriented, like, hey, man, this is good. This is bad. So I'd love to get her opinion in on it as well, too. So we started you know, because I'm like, nurse practitioner, medically integrated. So I started it six weeks before any of the patients did. And so I go through phases of working out where I bulk up, you know, So I bulked up trying to keep up with my oldest son lifting a little bit. And so I was like, it. I lost. It was. Right. I mean, I'm on the seventh week right now. I'm down 31 pounds. My wife's been like, 22, you know, so feel amazing on it. Yes, it was great. Still working out, eating clean, you know, 90 of the time. So it was great just to go through it and just to experience it myself and some. And my wife, you know, and we traveled while we were on it, so we got to go through all of those things, which now, you know, we do the weekly calls. So it's. It's nice to be able to communicate with the patients that are doing it now, like, hey, been there. You know, so here's. Here's where everybody's at and all that. So I would. I would definitely encourage people to do it, you know, if they need to. If they need to lose a little bit of weight, and even if they don't need to lose weight, it's good to do the nutrition plan, you know?
Yeah, for sure.
Yeah.
So you guys, you know, you get certified, and then, you know, we're ready to launch this, I think, you know, you were able to get certified in about 30 days to. It was somewhere around 30 to 40 days. And we kind of started you initially with launching, you know, your pot of gold list, which is essentially the people closest to you and your network. Like, obviously, a lot of the marketing we do is the social media stuff. But, like, what, you know, what helped you in getting this launch successfully after you were able to get certified?
Yeah, so I just. Like I said, I don't want to reinvent the wheel. So I just kind of watched the videos and did the pot of gold training. So I've, you know, I'm almost 50, so I was like, man, I'm a little bit slow with the technology, but really just followed the course, started doing a little table talk with some of the patients, some of my family, you know, for a couple weeks, and then just kind of like, threw some nuggets out to him, see if people would be interested. My staff made me a little list, and it was ready to launch. You know, we just. I just sent a text out to him, kind of like what that described, and see who was interested in it. And I was really surprised like, how many people. You know, my wife kind of makes fun of me. You know, as I talked to, I was like, I cannot believe how many people will jump on weight loss. You know, it's like chiropractic, you know, you gotta. You know, unless you do marketing, you know, somebody comes in, you're, you know, you're kind of, like, answering questions and, like, forever, you know, and with this, I'm like, you know, a lot of females, like, yeah, sign me up. I'm ready, you know, when you starting? And then I almost. One of my mistakes was I almost. I communicated it too early because some of the patients, like, we're waiting. What's going on, doc? I was like, not quite ready yet. Not ready yet. You know, so then they're, like, getting a little bit upset. I was like, dang, I communicated this a little bit too quick, you know, because they were, like, itching at it, ready to go. So. Yeah. But, yeah, the excitement was good for it.
Yeah. So kind of in that, like, first initial launch, like, how many people, you know, in your first 30 days did you get to actually sign up?
So, I mean, in the first week we closed, it was just a tear under $23,000 in the first week that we collected.
Okay, awesome.
And. And then, you know, from that, then you had a few stragglers, you know, in the. In the last, you know, couple weeks. So that's. That's what we did literally the first week. So it was a little bit overwhelming in a good way, you know, so those are good problems to have in an office. So. But yeah, so that was awesome. First week. Yeah.
Yeah, that's awesome, man. I mean, what. You know, what did. What was maybe like, the biggest thing you learned in that time frame once you launched to kind of getting the word out versus, you know, where most people are, they're gonna go heavy social media and. And that. But it was like, hey, I'm just going to my internal list first. And, like, starting with that.
Yeah, that was a little bit of a change for me because I've done outside marketing, you know, for the last, I don't know, decade, and had an outside marketing company sold that. And then, you know, that's really all I've done and just get referrals in my office as well, too, so. But this one here, I mean, it. I really wouldn't say brought me out of my comfort zone because I like to explain to people what I'm doing, you know, and then they're seeing me lose weight in the office. They're like, doc, what's going on? What are you doing? So it was. It was just natural because that's just my table talk, you know? So you're talking with patients. You're like, man, Ryan, what are you doing? Losing weight. Yeah. Tell my wife. And they're like, so you cutting calories? You detox? And I'm like, no, you know, I'm actually having troubles getting all my calories in, specifically protein, drinking water, and, you know, eating food. I'm not detoxing. You know, I mean, you're detoxing food, but, yeah, so that was the. That was the craziest thing for me, just to see how. How many patients were, like, interested in it. Just in my own circle and office and friends and things like that.
Yeah, that's awesome, man. So, like, now that you've actually got people in the program or you're kind of, like, walking them through that, what's been kind of the game changer for you with this system and just kind of how it works? And, you know, a lot of it is done virtually, whether you sign people up in person. So, like, how have you seen that? You know, kind of looking forward and down the road to, like, what's possible for this program?
Yeah. So let me separate the business side here. So the business side of it, it's amazing because we already have a pretty busy office, and it's full, trying to keep up. And this is an awesome A, because it helps people so well lose weight, and it is virtual, so it's not consuming extra time and visits in the office. That sounds terrible, but it's fantastic, you know, because I also have my daughter who's in nursing school helping me do it, you know, and this is her cup of tea. This is what she wants to do for a living. So she's thriving off of it. It. And so it's great to see her flourish and to help people nutritionally and review stuff, you know, so she's so great at it. So it's great to, A, help the patients in a way, and then, B, from a business standpoint, it's not taking up an enormous amount of time. It was at the beginning, don't get me wrong, for people that watching it, like, you got to put the work in. You got to do the Facebook, but once you get it down, becomes very routine. It's not like a ton of work, you know. You know, like every morning, it's just my routine. You get up, you drink the water, then you know, whether I go work out, then I do my Facebook post. And so it's. It's not like it's a ton. The most challenging part for me was signing that many people up at the beginning. I'll be honest, when expecting that many people to sign up and I'm like, holy crap, we gotta onboard them. And then I personally messed up because I thought we had to do like one on ones with them. And then when Kim said we don't have to do one on ones, it's like, you do the class a zoom call once a week. I was like, oh, thank you, God. Because I was like, we was like overwhelmed. I was like, dude, this is going to take up so much time. She's like, no, do a zoom call. So I have my zoom call tonight and people jump on it and that's became awesome. You know, just a community for all the patients and people doing it. So it's awesome. Yeah, it's great.
Yeah, that's amazing. So, you know, kind of like going forward, man, like, what's, you know, what do you kind of see as a possibility? Because like, really this is a completely different model than typical chiropractic clinic, right?
Yeah.
So, like, what do you see as like a possibility moving forward, man?
So being virtual, I mean, the. Honestly, the world's open with it. I mean, it's crazy, you know, so we live in such a unique spot where there's all these little towns or 20, 30 minutes and Clemson traffic's crazy busy. Probably like, you know, a lot of places where people live and just having that opportunity to do it virtually and doing the zooms and the one on ones, for example, you know, we had a, you did a call. I don't know, it was a week or two ago. And we, you know, with your marketing, you posted a kind of like a PowerPoint presentation. So I was like, you know, I did that like 10 years ago. Got sick of doing them. I'm really like, I don't even know. I was like, shoot, let's give that a try, you know, so I. We're doing it next week and we did a sign up of like 25 people. And then, you know, so people are asking about it, signing up for it. So I'm like, you know, so I'm just in the empathy stage of like, the sky's the limit. You know, we have like, all right, so we got 25 people signed up now I got to work on the PowerPoint. Go through it, and then you have the Facebook, you know, then you get people coming in. I'm just getting ready to launch that started Doing some dms. So I would just tell people to be ready because it's a. It is easily attractable to the outside, into the public. You know what I mean? So it's great to have that system. I mean, you have the DMS for people, so it's. I mean, you have it there, but, you know, you still gotta just stay consistent with it, you know, and you're gonna. There's so many different sources of where these people are coming from. Plus my own patients. Yeah.
Yeah. What's maybe an expected result you've gotten from the program?
What do you mean? For, like, people's weight loss or. What do you mean, specific?
No, just like, maybe what's something you've gotten out of it that you weren't expecting to get? But, like, you know, it's kind of been an at. Like, you're like, hey, man, I had no idea this is what I was gonna get. But it's pretty awesome.
Yeah. Hey. I just say the response from the public, you know, like friends on Facebook. It sounds crazy, but, you know, it's like, hey, Ryan, here's the content. Jesse, I'm gonna do this freaking content, dude. It's like, I don't want to ask somebody a question, but then I talk to some of my buddies, you know, and they see that you're on it, and they're like, dude, when you ask a question, what's so crazy is, like, I don't respond very much on Facebook. You know, I'll be honest. But somehow I got engaged in your name, and you'd ask a question, and it freaking sucked me in. And I answered a question that you asked because it was like, man, that's a really good question. So I answered it. And then from there, we started our dialogue. And then it's the same thing with my patients, you know, so we asked a question, you know, this morning. It was like, you know, I did a picture of me in my weighted vest is. I was like, anybody ever work out with a backpack or weighted vest, man? And it's just like, bam. You know, you get like 30, 40 responses from folks. And so that's probably been the most surprising thing to me. Just the engagement in the community, and then, you know, and people like, hey, what are you doing? How you losing weight? That's just normal conversation. And then my wife, she gets in her friend group, and you're like, holy crap. You know, all the girls and the ladies are like, what's going on? You know, so, yeah, the women.
Women are like 10x the guys, dude, it is crazy.
Like, it has blown my mind. My wife is like, ryan, where you been at the last 30 years? You know, so.
Yeah, that's funny.
It's pretty wild. Yeah.
Well, hey, man, you know, let's say somebody's watching this. You know, they're. They're kind of thinking about the VIP weight loss system. Like, what would you say to that person?
Oh, man. Specifically chiropractors or anyone.
Yeah, chiropractors.
Okay.
Yeah.
So, man, in the chiropractic space, I love it. It's my baby. And you're bombarded with, like, every niche there is. You know what I mean? I'm not saying that's bad. I'm not saying any of it's bad. I mean, I love our profession. There's so many different things to do. But if you're a doc and you're treating someone and whether you. Whatever technique you do or whatever your philosophy is, you know, and you're helping someone and you're like, man, they do good. I get good results. But, man, if I could really help this patient, you know, lose 30, 40, 50, 100 pounds, you know, how much more would that change their life? Just from. Just from like, a servant leadership standpoint, in. In 22, 23 years of me practicing, this is the best system I've seen, hands down. There's been, like, two or three pivotal points in my career that literally, like, revolutionize my mindset, my business, my time with my family, all of it. And this one's in the top three, 100% just on. Just on the system, on how it works. Yeah, it's powerful, you know, because you change people's lives as far as, like, weight, you know, like, yeah, you get them out of pain, but, yeah, man, they need to lose £75, you know, so if we can take it another step or do it in conjunction with that, I mean, it's just a. It's a great marriage, you know, depending on what your philosophy is, you know, if weight and, you know, dropping that A1C and cholesterol, you know, so that's really cool. So a lot of my patients did that just for kicks and giggles, you know, before they started. So.
Yeah, no, that's awesome, man. I mean, that's a pretty big 23 years is a long time to do anything, let alone, yeah, the same business. So, yeah, I appreciate it.
And I'm the guy that, you know, like, with some of my other docs, they're like, hey, Ryan, it's your turn to try something. I'm like, all Right now it's your turn to give this one a shot, you know. And yeah, so this one just, you know, I'm in the infancy of it but I feel like it's here to stay too. It's not like it's, you know, a piece of technology that's just going to leave, you know what I mean? So it's, you know, so people always bombard this problem in our culture when fast foods, you know, with two dollar cheeseburger and french fries, you know, so it's, it's a, it's a cool program and it's a lifestyle, you know, so it's habit based lifestyle, you know. So we're really trying to train people on man, this is a great way to eat and to live. So.
Yeah, for sure. Well, hey man, I appreciate the word and you know, we just want to thank you for being a part of the VIP weight loss and have a base lifestyle community. If people wanted to reach out to you man, to find out more about you, you know, what you're doing or maybe just ask you some stuff about vip, you know, and your personal experience, like how would they get a hold of you?
Sure. I'm an open book. So I love helping other docs. They came to my clinics and so I'm not saying like I'm a master of any of but I'm an open book. I have no problem sharing. I want everybody to be like ultra successful and help their community and whoever they can reach. So yeah, feel free to give me a shout, my personal phone number.
Yeah, we'll do, how about we do this? So.
Okay, I don't care.
Yeah, if you guys are listening to this, I'll have Ryan's info in the show notes. Not as personal.
