Foreign.
Welcome back to the habit based lifestyle podcast. I'm your host, Jesse Yule. Today I got a very special guest, Mr. Lelandson, who's actually a doctor in San Diego. Leland, I want to welcome you on the show today.
Thanks Jesse. Thanks for having me on. Appreciate it.
Hey, can you tell us a little bit about just, you know, what made you want to be a chiropractor and just a little bit about like the name of your business and you know, just some things about you and your family personally.
Sure. So the name of the practice is back pain relief Chiropractic. I wanted to, I usually it was named ohana chiropractor before but I wanted to make it more patient centric that people could, you know, easily digest in the beginning. So back pain sounds good. Chiropractor is attached to it. People really couldn't attach themselves to ohana chiropractic because it just didn't really, it meant something to me but didn't mean anything to anybody else. So decided changing that, that was about 10 years ago. I got introduced to chiropractic when I was about 14. I was a high school wrestler and a cross country and track track runner. And I was having some low back and some knee issues. Wanted to go see a local chiropractor who helped me out greatly. That was kind of spotic and then college. I was a collegiate cyclist for about four years and I again, I had knee pain. Went to the local physical therapists, they said I had to quit racing and I decided that wasn't the answer. So I decided to go see a local chiropractor and he literally adjusted me and fixed me in like one. It was just amazing. So that really sparked my interest. Like this is something I gotta pursue. But I, I hated school. I just didn't like the academics of it, so I decided to put the academic side and wait for another 10 years. Decided, okay, it's time to make a change. Yeah, I didn't want to work anymore, so I decided to go back to school. And I've seen some pretty miraculous stuff. My wife at the time had a pretty serious infection in her spinal column called meningitis. She also had a. She had a brain stem issue, which she suffered greatly from. And the neurologist, she basically went from walking to a. To a cane, to a walker, to a wheelchair and was basically bedridden. And the only people that could really help her out were chiropractors. All the neurologists said she wouldn't be able to walk again. I took her to probably a dozen different chiropractors, and they all did extremely well with her. And I was still in school. I was still in chiropractic school. So it was really tough for me to balance married to somebody who needs care on that kind of just a really severe condition. But chiropractic was the only thing I could see that was making any sort of visible difference from my side. And she said chiropractic is the only thing that I could help her out. She ended up passing away about 10, 15 years ago, right after I started practice.
Oh, my gosh.
It was. That. Was that. That made me dive into. Why is it that chiropractic was the only thing that made her better? No medication, no surgeries did anything for her. So that was my fuel for. For going forward. And that's. I think that's one thing that I just kind of keep. My back pocket is always remembering what it was that made me. It wasn't just about back pain. It's more like, okay, how does. How can we make the entire body function when you're at your very worst?
Wow.
I mean, that's it.
That's a. That's an amazing story. So. So that kind of got you into, you know, I mean, really the root cause of chiropractic. Right? And, like. Yeah, and I think that's a really. I mean, that's a really powerful thing, man, to turn your pain into kind of like your purpose, you know? And that's.
It's a huge. It's a huge fueling point, because without that, I don't think. I mean, the knee pain was. The knee pain, I think still kind of drives me, but it's not as powerful. It's like, yeah, being an athlete, like, anytime you're in the gym or you're working out, you're, especially when you're competitive, you want every single piece of equipment around you to make yourself a better athlete. That's just plain. But when you have something as close as a spouse that's dying and you're struggling to like I was unemployed, I was in school, I had a few jobs, but not enough to make the medical bills, you know, meet. And I couldn't find any other medical profession that could even say, hey, this is what we have to do. And there was no answer. And so I mean literally they went in, they removed six of her, seven of her vertebrae in the back. And so when you don't have bone attachments to the back neck, your head naturally collapses forward. And so you can't adjust somebody with rods and screws in the neck. You just can't do it. And left was, it was C1. And so I had to find specialists in the area that were not cheap. So I had to, while in school had to find a way to find these chiropractors to adjust her just one segment. It literally took, it was like a 30 second adjustment, but it made. That's all. And that's all she received. And that was such a huge influence on the way that I get fired about adjusting people.
Wow. And yeah, my, my pain comment was more of like, you know, life pain, not necessarily physical pain. Yes.
Yeah. Life pain 100. So my, her pain, her physical pain led to my emotional pain and drive.
Right.
Get people that way. So yeah.
Wow, that's. That's amazing. So let's kind of fast forward to today. Obviously, you know, you're remarried, you got how many? Three kids, right?
Three kids, yeah. Seven, eight and 11.
Okay. And like what would you say so kind of prior to coming into habit based lives lifestyle, the results based marketing, like what would you say the biggest struggle you had kind of prior to.
Coming in the biggest struggle was on was honestly just the online and email and texting format. Like I know how to connect to people one on one. So I'm really good at driving people because I can connect people right away. It's. That's not, that's always been a really strong part of my character. But now that we have social media and email and texting, it's just, it's a, it's a jungle to find out how to navigate that. And this program was the only one that was able actually they have some sort of format that I can do on a daily basis from either way, whether it's Facebook or back back. Dave was like MySpace right. You could have done the same thing. But whatever formats out there has taken the lead. You can use this protocol to generate leads cold, without being necessarily like cold leads. You can learn how to, you know, generate that, that rapport and get people to know who you are. And I've had a lot of patients that have seen me on Facebook that I haven't talked to in years, and they've come back out of the woodwork, come into care. So it's, it's a really powerful thing that, you know, I talk to people pretty much on a daily basis, like, yeah, I follow you on Facebook, but you never comment. And so they know that I'm doing stuff based upon what I'm doing and also have, you know, I don't, I don't comment anything, but I follow you and I'm referring friends to you because I see what you're doing on Facebook, Mike, and I get it. I'm like, okay. And I've never had that response before, which is kind of cool.
Yeah. So, I mean, the, the biggest thing, you know, it sounds like you were struggling a little bit with was like just a system on how to actually market leveraging, you know, social media, leveraging, you know, text leveraging email. Like, what, what was, you know, like, a lot of times people think, is it. Is it hard? You know, things like that, like, how easy is it to implement? And I always tell people, like, look, can you, you know, follow directions? But like, for you, you know, how simple was this for you to implement into your business compared to maybe some of the other things you've done in the past?
Yeah, it's. It's simple. You just have to follow the process. And it does take time. Just like if you want to work out and go to the gym, you're not going to see results. After the first week that you go to the gym, you may get, you know, you may feel a lot better, but you're not going to see results until you actually put some time and effort into it. But it doesn't take a whole lot of. In the beginning, it takes some time to kind of get used to the format, but once you get into the consistency of, of doing it, then it's really not that hard process. It's just consistency. So in the beginning, it takes a little bit more time because you're sort of learning, you're figuring it out. But you figure out, look, it's. It's okay. This is, this is what I do.
Yeah. I mean, I, I think I always compare. It's funny. Cause I always compare working out to anything in this program because I'm like, look, if you went to the gym one time, you can't expect to see a lot of results. But for some reason, you know, people think that about marketing. It's like if I market once or twice, they expect their whole life to change. And I'm like, well, it doesn't really work that way. But you know, if it did, you know, that would obviously be great. But you know, the, the big thing is, is, you know, you got to be consistent with it. But let me ask you this, man. What has been maybe one of the most unexpected results you've gotten in the program?
So it was just this past week. We had done our Black Friday and Cyber Monday program and you had sent a protocol out. And I actually got got started on a couple days too late or later than I should have been. But I just followed the program for where it started from a couple days before Black Friday. And my goal was to sell ten six hundred dollar packages and in the protocol you had stated should be a thousand to two thousand. So I decided to up it to our next package, which was 1170. And then we went from there. We, the first two days we offered it to ours, I basically checked off about 100 to 200 of our preferred patients in our practice to see those are the clients that are most likely to, to to buy the program. And we got like three or four the first day and a half or two days. And I was like, okay, well I'm all basically almost halfway there to my goal, to my 6,000. And then black Friday came around and I wasn't working at the office, but from home I was able to get another three or four. And then yesterday we got another three or four. So total, we tested in 12, three for total sales. So we blew past our initial goal of 6,000. And I'm like, okay, well let's just shoot for 10. We broke 10. We got to 12 three.
That's awesome.
Pending. So yeah, so it's, it was, you know, it was unexpected, but you know, without the plan it wouldn't have worked. It wasn't really, wasn't that much work to put out there either.
And the cool thing is, I mean, you just kind of like took action, right? You didn't like have to think about what you needed to do. You just kind of took action and, you know, communicated with people and basically got them signed up and it wasn't probably a lot of effort. And you made $12,000 in like four days.
Yeah.
So can you think of a time, any other time in business you've been able to do that?
No. So for the amount of work that it put into it. No. I mean, it was literally maybe like an hour a day doing it. So.
Yeah. No, that's amazing. So talk to me a little bit about, like, what this has. I mean, because we've changed your offer also a little bit. We've kind of repackaged and repositioned some of the ones you're doing. Like, what has that been like for you and your clinic? And kind of looking at chiropractic differently and how you present this to a client?
Right. So we had switched from a pervasive model to a program. So now when I present it to patients, I'm like, this is our back pain relief program, or this is our hip and knee pain relief program. So I'm writing in the visits, but I'm not like, saying, well, for the block of 24, this is what you get. Say, this is our protocol, and I'm putting you on the hip and knee pain program, and this is how much. This is what the program is. So that way they're not, like, calculating out, you know, this is what is per visit. So I can. I can have more freedom to change and add in. Like, I could add and decompression. I can add in different therapies instead of saying, well, it's just a block of 24 visits, so it's easier.
So when you present in that fashion, so, you know, you used to do per visit, the client would know how much it was per visit. And then now you're selling the results and the protocol. What has that done for you and your closing percentage, and then what has that also done for your client?
I haven't looked at percentages, but it's made me feel more confident on presenting it because I'm saying, look, this is the. This is the program, and here's how much the program is versus, like, oh, well, I'm recommending 24 visits for you. So I'm still. I'm still mentioning it, but I'm not focusing on it. It's like, okay, well, you buying the program, you're not just buying the visits, right?
So what do you think that's done for the client in the way that they think about, like, how they see your value or your service?
I think. I think it. It dramatically increases the value because they know that, okay, I'm. I'm doing program like, I'm doing this. This protocol. I'm not just doing. I'M just, just coming for another visit. We're actually on a, we're on a, on our program. So it's not like, well just, we have, you know, two more visits, we have three more visits nodes. It's okay. We have, we're gonna finish the program. The program will finish. The first part of the program will finish in three months and then we'll go from there. But in the meantime we're gonna, the program will take 12 weeks to do.
Yeah. That's awesome. So let me ask you this man. What is the group aspect been like for you in, in this program in the community?
Yeah, so it has been great because it's, it's not like, it's great having like minded individuals in the same community. Although you know, some are doing chiropractic, some are doing other therapies, some are doing weight loss. It's great to see other like minded individuals apply the same technique and see the results that they're getting too. So you know, whether you're like I think Derek said to, it's a pet, like the pet field, right?
Yeah.
And so I'm not in that program. But it's good to see that there are other programs that are using the same protocol and still able to get or generate results.
Yeah. No, that's awesome. What would you say, like, I mean you were on the fence for a good year, year and a half, maybe even two. What would you say to kind of a guy that might be on the fence thinking about whether or not this is, is going to work for him?
I would say, you know, definitely, definitely do it. You know, don't expect, if you get immediate results. Perfect. But just know that the results will come when you put in the right amount of time and effort and do the right protocol. I get so many, what do you call solicitors saying hey know, buy my product. But they don't even make an effort to, you know, connect with me. And the connection is super, super key. So whether or not you, you get that call or you get that, that client in, you still have to get that report because like even with you, with me, it took a while, but you had to, you had to plant that seed and constantly water it and not expect me to buy the first on the first. I'm just not that I'm not that kind of purchaser. I have to wait because that's just, that's just, just that's just me. But again, you know, I may have clients that I may see them, I may do a consult with them and it May not be for another couple months next year until they actually jump on the program where they're actually hurting enough to want the program. At least I'm giving, keeping contact with them online or through text or through emails so that when they do actually decide to do it, I'm the one that they're going to go to and nobody else. So with the program, it's good to have that. Consistency is key. That's what it is. If you have like minded individuals that are supporting you, even better.
Yeah, no, that's great man. Well, hey, we appreciate you for being on the show today. Any last words you want to leave for our audience?
