Two speakers debate whether Manila Luzon should host Drag Den instead of Drag Race Philippines, arguing that her US base leaves her disconnected from Filipino gay slang and humor. They point to Drag Race Mexico, where Valentina struggled with culturally specific jokes despite speaking Spanish fluently.
How does the drag scene react to Drag Den by Manila Luzon and Drag Race Philippines? Is it similar to like the scene here where like queens are like Dragula versus Drag Race or like, you know, any other competition series like that? Because Philippines is the only market where they have two televised drag performance competitions that came out around the same time. Well, here's my personal opinion, and I've always said this, that Manila Luzon and Paula Balisteros should have exchanged places.
My personal opinion, because Paula can get into the in the windows, the jokes, and that's what they do in Drag Den. They, they speak in the Filipino gay lingo or the queer lingo, whereas Manila Luzon couldn't. Apparently laughing, but she didn't understand anything.
And also, I, I just did not get why would you get a host that won't get our humor. It would still— that's— people gave that— I, again, I'm— the only reason I'm asking is because you, you both can provide that perspective, because I read so many comments about this with Valentina in Drag Race Mexico, because Valentina was born and raised in the US and she was fluent enough in Spanish to read the dialogue, but she did not understand any of the jokes. They said that there was such a disconnect, like Snatch Game— how can you do Snatch Game if I don't know any of the celebrities. Oh yeah, the references.
