In this short conversational excerpt, Speaker A and Speaker B examine a rehearsal situation where a dancer named Samting has taken on the majority of the choreography. They argue that assuming most of the choreographic work makes Samting responsible for any flaws in the final performance, because the burden of the choreography—and its potential failures—rests on the person who creates it. The speakers highlight that challenges can arise when one person carries the bulk of the creative load, and they stress that clear, proactive communication within the team is crucial to mitigate misunderstandings and improve the collective outcome.
Who messed up?
Who messed up? Yeah.
Um, Samting or— I think it's tricky because we only see so much. Yeah, right. It's like they're doing this for 2 days. Yeah. And we only see like an hour, we see 60 minutes of it. Yeah. So I feel like Samting taking the brunt of the choreo also means that you have to fall, you have to fall. Like if you— yeah, if it's like you're falling on your own sword, like you are taking all the choreo, you're taking the responsibility. That means that you're also going to be responsible if people don't do it well or if it's not that good in the final product. Yeah. So I feel like maybe there were challenges, but I think that's where communication is really important as a team.
Yeah, I also see something in there that's culturally based. You know, the Western culture is really about individualism. But you know, we— I will speak for the Filipinos. We are known for the word kapwa, which means community. And that's why we're so good at collaborating with each other. Yeah. And so we do— there are instances where, you know, we don't agree, but most of the time kapwa prevails. Like, we consider each other as part of each other, and that's why it's easier for us to collaborate and work together. Not to say that the state of the Philippines right now is really, really, really good. I don't know if it has something to say with, um, with a kapua culture that we have, but, um, I know it's complicated politics and all of that, right? Right, right. Yeah. Oh, that's, that's really beautiful.
