In this introductory YouTube video, Virginia Please announces a new series that will explore the history of LGBTQIA+ pop music. She opens by celebrating the recent Grammy win for Sam Smith and Kim Petras’s song “Unholy,” noting that Petras became the first transgender woman and Smith the first openly non‑binary artist to receive the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Virginia then highlights a roster of contemporary LGBTQIA+ pop stars—Lil Nas X, Miley Cyrus, Janelle Monáe, Halsey, Demi Lovato, Troye Sivan, among others—showcasing their chart dominance today. She connects this visibility to a lineage of pioneering LGBTQIA+ pop icons such as Elton John, Freddie Mercury, Little Richard, Janis Joplin, Divine, Sylvester, David Bowie, RuPaul, and George Michael, who broke barriers in earlier eras. The video serves as a launchpad for a series in which each of these historic figures will be profiled, illustrating how their courage and artistry paved the way for the current generation.
