#8 AI for Good Specialization [Course 1, Week 1, Lesson 2]

The AI for Good Lab applies AI and data to global challenges like health disparities, climate change, and digital equity. The course covers concrete methods: medical imaging, bioacoustics, satellite imagery for carbon accounting. It emphasizes working with domain experts, privacy-preserving data sharing, and responsible AI practices.
Chapters
We live in a rapidly changing world and a world that is facing big challenges. Yet we have never been in a better position to use technology to help address these issues and positively influence the lives of millions on our planet as well as the planet itself. The challenges we face are complex and no one company or organization can solve them alone. To work on these problems, we must partner and work together with subject matter experts in different areas around the world. Working in tandem, our AI for Good lab applies our core technical strength toward important concerns like health disparities, climate change, natural resources conservation, as well as digital equity and cyber influence operations. We are committed to combating health disparities based on gender, race, ethnicity or income level. With a strong privacy, security and ethics foundation. Our lab explores how AI techniques can be applied to these problems. AI can improve the medical imaging process, discover new insights and can also make healthcare affordable for more people. A more sustainable future is the only path forward for our planet. Now is the time for urgent action. We cannot solve a problem if we cannot measure it. Technologies including high resolution satellite imagery and AI can be a game changer for this. From disaster preparedness, disaster response, land cover mapping or carbon accounting, geospatial data combined with AI models can significantly make a difference. We must preserve the world precious animal species before it's too late. We work on this problem by taking large volume of images and bioacoustical audio recordings and applying AI models to them. These enable scientists and researchers to gain insights and monitor environmental integrity and such as the presence or absence of species in the ocean or rainforest. Behind AI models there is data to democratize AI. We need to democratize data. For this reason, it is more important than ever to open up data sets and provide frameworks to help empower everyone on the planet to tackle these challenges. We are committed to contributing to open data initiatives and providing privacy preserving technology to help organizations open data without affecting the privacy of the individuals. We bring our learnings to light via data stories written for a broad audience and illustrated using sophisticated data visualization tools. We hope these stories make complex data easier to grasp, increase our shared understanding and catalyze others to create solutions. When we partner together, we can make headways in solving these world challenges, but we must do so responsibly with an awareness of the problems that AI itself can create. Using AI in the wrong way can negatively impact people's lives in important ways. It is crucial that we understand the risks and limitations of AI. We need to make sure we use AI for the benefit of everyone. Together we can overcome these obstacles and fulfill our mission to harness the power of data and AI to to address the world's greatest challenges and empower everyone to do more. Throughout these courses, we're excited to share with you the work that has been done by our AI for Good Lab. Our research scientists will highlight specific projects and, where applicable, provide information about how to leverage our open source materials. Thank you for engaging in this course and building a better world with AI.
