Joanne Smith shares three rock-climbing techniques: look a metre ahead to anticipate moves, use a skip-slide pattern on unstable ground then stride confidently on solid rock, and keep your body low and close to the rock with active arms for balance.

There'll be some techniques here that professionals will be able to share, but I look like about— oh, I wish I could think how far ahead, maybe like a metre ahead in front of me, so I can always see what's coming next. So my brain's already processing the next bit. So you're looking ahead, but I don't know the exact distance, but it's just wherever I can comfortably see, but it'll probably be different for everybody. And I do a bit of a skip, a bit of a slide, and then obviously on the safe ground then I can stride out and give it my all on those times. I like to use, when I'm climbing on the rocks, and it's— I really like using arms for a scramble, whether that's going up or down. I always get right down low and I get my arms in and I just get stuck in there. Yeah, just thinking if there's any other things that I might do.
