After dropping out of the 197-mile Spine Race, a runner spent months in chronic pain despite scans showing nothing wrong. Dr. John Sarno's mind-body approach shifted their thinking, and within 8-10 weeks they went from barely walking to running 5 km on Christmas Day and returning to ultramarathon training.

What Joanne taught me actually changed my life. I know that sounds like a bit of an exaggeration, but I was in a real hole, uh, about 16, 17 months ago. Last year in June, I attempted the Spine Race and had to drop out 197 miles. And then I was recovering fine, and I just suddenly got this With anything I was doing. I wasn't really running and it just came on. And spoke to Joanne and she said, oh, have you heard of the work of Dr. Sarno and the mind-body connection? And I thought, what a load of rubbish. My knee is damaged somewhere, something's happened. Um, and despite that, you know, I'd went a couple of times to a couple of physios, I had some scans, nothing came out, but I was virtually limping all the time. But Joanne persisted and she said, look into the mind-body connection. So I did look into the work of Dr. Sarno and just, I just had a little bit of a shift in my mindset. So what actually happened was I went in the cold plunge pool in my garden and ran upstairs because I was freezing. And at the top of the stairs, I thought to myself, well, how did that happen? Because I can't run, I can barely walk. So it was that really chink and talking to Joanne, talking about the mind-body connection. And eventually, slowly started, slowly just walking, jogging, maybe 10, 20 meters. And it took a good 8 to 10 weeks to recover. But because of what Jo spoke to me and the way that she taught me, I was able to run my first 5K on Christmas Day. I helped out at the local parkrun, and before it started, I ran the course just to see if I could do it. Wow. And I've never really looked back. I've had other I think he, you know, kind of injuries since, and I've been able to use my— the mind-body connection to recognize if they are injuries, if I have damaged myself, or if they are a mind-body connection. So yes, thank you very much to Joanne for, oh yeah, getting me back on my feet and get me back, back running ultras.
