Joanne Smith explains how the brain acts as a prediction machine, continuously forecasting pain and symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and migraines. After 16 years of predicting these experiences, the brain becomes locked into expecting pain, making relief feel impossible without breaking the cycle.

But how am I supposed to be able to expect it when every single day for the last 16 years I have literally woken up seized up in discomfort and stiffness and pain? Like, how on earth am I supposed to expect things to get better? And honestly, valid question. I thought the same thing. How on earth can I expect things to shift, things to ease? get easier? It's a good question, but ultimately, um, the brain has been stuck in a predict— can I speak? Prediction, predictive coding. It's a predict— a prediction machine. Um, so if it's been predicting what's going to come next, so it'd be predicting pain's going to come, dizziness, fatigue, migraines, IBS, anxiety, whatever it might be, whatever the experience is, And if it's been doing that on repeat for months and months and years, then it makes sense that you might not even know this is happening, but if that's been happening and that's the evidence, that's the proof, that's the fact, what's been happening for years and years, then it makes sense that you've started to expect that to happen.
