A tour of Capernaum's archaeological sites on the Sea of Galilee shore. The white-limestone Byzantine synagogue sits where Jesus taught on the Sabbath, and an early church was built directly over Peter's mother-in-law's house, where Jesus healed her. The structures show layers of first-century and Byzantine history.

This is the outside edge of the synagogue in Capernaum, which is the hometown of Jesus. It's where he spent a lot of his time. It's on the northern edge of the Sea of Galilee. Here we're looking down into the actual village of Capernaum, and across that structure on the backside there is a church that was built over the home of Peter's mother-in-law. Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law when he was in Capernaum, and he also I spent time here, probably lived in that house. It's one of the earliest. It was converted— the home was actually converted into a church. That's one of the earliest churches ever built. And this synagogue that we're looking at here, the white limestone, is from the Byzantine period, but the foundation underneath it is from the time of Jesus. So this was actually built over the synagogue that Jesus would have been in. Wow. Would have been in when he came in and opened the scrolls in Capernaum, as he was wont to do on the Sabbath. That happened here. I'm going to show you in this synagogue now.
